Savvy' slaps sexual abuse charge on Miss World's father

The daughter of an army doctor has filed a case of child sexual abuse against Dr Ashok Chopra, father of Miss World Priyanka Chopra, and alleged that she was sexually abused by him over 14 years ago, a Mumbai-based magazine has reported.

An exclusive story filed by two correspondents of Savvy magazine's January issue, the report carried an interview with Dubai-based Shivani Saxena,37, where she has made these allegations.

Saxena and her husband Rajiv, who moved from Mumbai to Jumeria in Dubai, claimed Dr Chopra who worked as a junior officer to her father, had sexually abused her when her father was posted in Ferozepur in 1976.

Dr Chopra then worked as a junior officer to Dr Suresh Chandra Saksena in the 10 Medical Battalion of Army Medical Corps.

The magazine story states that Shivani was 12 years old when the alleged abuse took place at the Saksena residence where Dr Chopra was a frequent visitor.

"It was evening and I was alone at home. I was reading in my room. Dr Ashok Chopra entered the room and closed the door. Before I realised what was happening, he grabbed me and began to abuse me sexually," Saxena has alleged.

"He continued to abuse me sexually and when I struggled he began to beat me and twisted my arms to subdue me. During the assault he kept saying that if I ever uttered a word he would cut me up with a knife." she said.

Saxena said that the incident affected her psychologically and she did not inform her parents because her father had then suffered a heart attack.

She said that Dr Chopra remained a frequent visitor to the house till the Saksenas left Ferozepur in 1978.

"Whenever I met him in public, he would smirk at me and I felt the rage of impotence and helplessness boiling within me," the magazine report quotes her.

In 1985, Shivani married Rajiv Saxena and moved to Dubai. She has two children from the marriage and now works as the director of Mercon Trading LLC and Mercon Impex.

Asked why she decided to speak about the alleged abuse 14 years later, she said she began to relive the incident when Dr Chopra's photographs with Priyanka began appearing in publications before and after the Miss World beauty contest.

"My husband sought a personal apology from Dr Chopra recently, but it was not forthcoming," Saxena told Savvy.

Dr Chopra, however, evaded questions posed by the magazine, and did not categorically issue a denial.

"Who...? Tell her to face me. When is she alleging this, 20, 25 years ago? for God's sake, nobody has contacted us all these years," Lieutenant Col (retd) Dr Chopra said when the magazine's Delhi correspondent contacted him in Hotel Maurya Sheraton in New Delhi.
