Meet the big five who simply refused to quit and are now on top
By Johnny Vaz . Buzz18 Sep 22, 2008
Everyone goes through a rough patch. And the biggest stars in Bollywood are no exceptions. Shah Rukh Khan to Hrithik Roshan, everyone has faced such tough times, it's surprising how they've bounced back. Here's a lowdown:
Shah Rukh Khan
With dreams in his eyes, Shah Rukh came to Mumbai 'to own this city'. Today he confesses that it's the city that owns him. But he seems to have no regrets. With over 50 movies to his credits Shah Rukh Khan may well be the most envied star today. But like many actors, he too started small. Shah Rukh's first film was Hema Malini's Dil Aashna Hai but it was Raj Kunwar's Deewana that released first. Incidentally, both the films had the late Divya Bharati opposite him.
Divya was then a very big star. But Deewana turned the tables and made Shah Rukh a star overnight. It also fetched him the Filmfare Award for best debut. However after this hit, Shah Rukh took some bad career decisions that resulted in a string of flops.
With Baazigar and Darr, he was back in the running. The two films also started the trend of a hero doing negative roles. Then a lean period followed after which came the two big hits ' Karan Arjun and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.
The fluctuating career graph headed northwards after Koyla. Indeed there have been those drawbacks in his career even after Koyla, like Asoka, One 2 Ka 4, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, etc. But he almost always managed to give one huge hit every year and maintain his standing.

Akshay Kumar
When he made his debut in Saugandh (1991) neither was Akshay Kumar noticed nor was the film appreciated. It was with Khiladi that Akki got recognition and appreciation. But then the one hit was followed by several flops. Akshay Kumar managed to survive because of Waqt Hamara Hai but another series of flop films followed. But the dark cloud had a silver lining and three huge successes came one after another Yeh Dillagi, Mohra and Main Khiladi Tu Anari made him a name to reckon with.
This silver lining though gave way to a much darker cloud. One film after another flopped and it was only after over a dozen disasters that Dhadkan and Hera Pheri came his way. Both were stupendous hits and showed two different sides of the actor ' serious and comedy.
Akshay's career graph rose and fell over the next few years. While on the one hand there were hits like Aankhen, Awara Pagal Deewana and Andaaz there were super flops like Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani and Talaash: The Hunt Begins. But after Phir Hera Pheri, overseas audiences got hooked on to the phenomenon called Akshay Kumar.
Ever since, the star has never looked back. With not one or two but four huge hits in 2007, Akshay Kumar managed to do the unthinkable ' reportedly take on Shah Rukh Khan. Today, Akshay apparently charges a few crores over and above sharing 30 per cent of the profits of each film he acts in.

Aamir Khan
He may be picky and choosy today. But Aamir Khan confesses that the decision of signing over half a dozen films after Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak was perhaps the worst. After the super success of QSQT, a string of flops followed ' Raak, Love Love Love, Awwal Number and Tum Mere Ho among others.
People wrote him off as a one-film wonder but with Dil he silenced his critics. Deewana Mujh Sa Nahin, Jawani Zindabad and Afsana Pyaar Ka followed putting his career into deep peril.
This time it was Mahesh Bhatt's Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin that came to his rescue. After a whole lot of ups and downs, Rangeela became the film after which he actually started choosing movies. Then there hasn't been any looking back. The only three 'flops' per se after Rangeela were Mann, Mela and Mangal Pandey: The Rising. Although Earth didn't technically do well at the box office, it managed to get Aamir a lot of critical accolades.

Salman Khan
Although Salman's first commercial success was Maine Pyar Kiya, this star made his debut as a second lead in Biwi Ho To Aisi in 1988. He then went on to give four hits in a row ' Baaghi, Sanam Bewafaa, Patthar Ke Phool and Kurbaan.
Even as these tremendously successful films left a mark at the box office, he made some serious mistakes and ended up giving at least half a dozen flops between 1992 and 93. He bounced back with Andaz Apna Apna and Hum Aapke Hain Koun, the latter becoming one of the biggest grossers in the history of Hindi cinema.
A couple of flops followed after which came Karan Arjun and then another string of debacles. It was left to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's love saga Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam to salvage Salman's flagging career. It was where he met Aishwarya Raiand also manage to deliver a fantastic performance. Ever since there has been no looking back'

Hrithik Roshan
Something went drastically wrong after the release of Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai. Perhaps it was the stupendous success of the film that overshadowed his performances in his following releases. Or perhaps it was just that all these movies (Fiza, Mission Kashmir, Yaaden) were such duds that even Hrithik Roshan couldn't salvage them. It would be a while before Hrithik discovered his superhero powers. But till then his career, though promising as it seemed, fluctuated as one flop followed every hit. K3G was followed by Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage. Yash Raj's Mujhse Dosti Karoge was followed by Rajshri's Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon which was a big flop.
That was where Papa Roshan stepped in and unleashed the power of Jadoo in Koi... Mil Gaya. Krrish followed and all was hunky dory. Today it is reported that Hrithik refuses to act in a film deal if he isn't co-producing the movie. Some insist it's unprofessional. But then again isn't that what is called putting one's money where one's mouth is?
