Will Subhash Ghai retrieve his showman title with this one?
After Raj Kapoor, it was Shubhash Ghai who got the title 'showman' thanks to his formula masala flicks like 'Karz' , 'Vidhaata', 'Hero' , 'Karma', 'Ram Lakhan', 'Saudagar' turning smash hits.
But of late any sane man would agree that he doesn't really deserve a heavy duty title like that.
After all, post the fairly decent 'Pardes' and 'Taal', this guy kind of lost the plot.
Naturally it was because Mr. Ghai started overestimating his skills, refused to adapt to the changing times and continued mocking the intelligence of his viewers.
As a result his ambitious later films -'Yaadein' and 'Kisna' for which he slogged his butt off bit the dust.
This very well gives me a chance to question Mr Ghai's cinematic sense.
His production house Mukta Arts might have churned out a sensible flick 'Iqbal', and 'hits' '36 China Town' and 'Aitraaz', but Mr Ghai wasn't exactly at the helm here.
And who can ignore senseless fare like 'Good Boy, Bad Boy', 'Apna Sapna Money Money', 'Shaadi Se Pehle' which came out of his company too? Now if shares creative credit for the successes, he has to be blamed for the failures too! That only being too fair!
After no body could get his 'poetry in motion' 'Kisna' many felt that Mr. Ghai would retire and only use his 'abilities' to produce movies.
But then no, after a while he felt that his great 'directorial' skills are rusting and hence decided to wield the mega phone again. He of course didn't consider what might be the plight of the poor viewers he creates yet another blunder.
Now Mr Ghai always had this burning ambition to do a Mozart style musical and had this huge fascination with a piano romance. And hence his next release coming soon in 'Yuvvraaj' and it's all about love and music meeting, love binding music and stuff like that!
So desperate is he that he made up with Salman Khan (with whom he had bitter relations for long), and chose the bad boy's lady love Katrina (Mr Ghai, please don't keep telling us that you chose her for her acting skills) as his leading lady. And yeah, he didn't forget to choose old favourite Anil Kapoor as well.
Now Ghai is looking at his characters having a romance with the piano as well as a co-star. But I am sure this one will be more about the real life romance between Salman and Katrina then anything else. After all they haven't done it for long (in spite of a hit 'Partner') and I feel Mr. Ghai has cashed in on that big time to ensure a hit.
Wonder how Mr. Director is fitting in Mithun Chakraborty and a non happneing Zayed Khan in all this!
In trying to create the perfect product he remained confused throughout too by calling the movie 'Yuvraj' and 'Main Yuvraj' before settling for 'Yuuvraaj'. I am sure numerology had the final say.
I pray that Ghai hasn't forgotten to
convince Katrina to work on her expressionless face too along with trying to look convincing as a musical character.
And yeah, since it's a musical he's has the best of the lot to take care of that department- Gulzar and AR Rahman.
Looking at the promos, it seemed Ghai's been carrying a hangover of 'Pardes' and 'Taal'. And Salman seems to have a hangover of his 'musician from abroad' character from 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.'
As grand as it looks and feels, I do not have a shred of doubt that Mr Ghai's bubble will burst with this one and finally rest in peace.
