Was TZP an original or was it copied/inspired from something else?

I am not saying that bollywood are not snobs. Of course, they always have been. And there are better choices than TZP out there. But the Oscars are not really my standards for all movies. They are snobby too when it comes to independent movies and stuff like that. Yes, they are far more fair than bollywood awards (which are more of popularity awards anyways) but I still don't think they are completely fair.
Not that I think TZP deserves to win. Good movie but like someone said lots of melodrama that won't settle well.

I seriously doubt that TZP will be nominated for an oscar. It was melodramatic and manipulative. Maybe compared to mindless flicks that Bollywood churns out every year, it may seem like a "masterpiece".. but it was full of flaws and had some of the most predictible and corny scenes.

I usually make an attempt to watch all the movies nominated for the best foreign language film, and TZP is not even close to the calibre of these movies..

and btw 1947 Earth and RDB, both were not nominated for an academy award in any of the categories

TZP was a drag. Too many songs and parts of it were way too melodramatic that the intended realism was lost. It seemed as though the it were straining for effect. Though personally I prefer films where the director leaves a lot to the imagination of the audience, I have no problem with movies being manipulative either; it takes skill and a ridiculously good script to manipulate the audience's emotions and make them feel sympathetic towards the film/character. But the fact is that, the manipulation in TZP wasn't subtle... Almost as if Aamir Khan were trying to shove it down our throats... Some of the characters were a bit caricaturish as well. The movie had its moments, but when seen as a whole, there were a lot of glaring flaws... That said, it was one of the better Indian movies I've watched. As for the Academy Award jury not caring much for it, I don't think the film is any more melodramatic or protracted than Lagaan was... I wish the movie and AK the very best. If perchance it wins, then it would be a proud moment for AK and his nonconformist vision, and if it doesn't, then the pursuit for the Oscar continues...
