I agree with some previous posts that said that while the discrimination against dark skin exists, it has been overdone in the serial. To be honest, when i see the behavior of the family towards Saloni on TV, it is nauseating...the whole, let us "sell" her off by giving a high dowry, Saloni-is-the curse-on-the-household mentality is disgusting.
An example from real life - I know this darkish skinned, extremely smart, well-educated, intellectual guy for whom the parents were looking for an arranged match. They found an awesome, brilliant girl but she was dark-skinned too, and the mother rejected the proposal on the grounds that - if both are so dark, imagine how dark the kids would be. One more point about this guy - not drop dead gorgeous or anything either. Anyways, he got married to a fair-skinned girl who does not have the talent or ability to support the intelligence or stature of her husband!! He is miserable, and so is she. Moral of the story? If he had been married to a smart girl, regardless of skin color, he would have been so happy and satisfied.
So while things like this still happen in our society, I just dont understand or condone the obsession with fair skin. My dad is very fair, while my mother is not and theirs is a love marriage...all her life, my mom is asked only one question and that bothers me - how did you land such a "gora-chitta" guy?? Its almost as if people dont seem to grasp that on all the significant levels of a relationship, my parents are ideally matched!! After 30 years of being together, why does the question about skin color even have to come up???? 😡
