Preity Zinta's security guards want to beat up her co-star Vansh Bhardwaj!

We hear that Preity Zinta has so convincingly played an abused wife, Chand in Deepa Mehta's Heaven on Earth that during the shooting of the film in Toronto, her two security guards were sorely tempted to beat up her co-star Vansh Bhardwaj, who plays her abusive husband and repeatedly roughs up the no-nonsense Preity.

"That's true," said Preity. "The impact of the violence against me was so strong my security guards wanted to put poor Vansh in his place. He is so damn good. Vansh makes domestic violence look scarily normal. And that's what really bothered my guards. Although they knew that we were just acting, they still couldn't take it," she added.

"It's all thanks to Rituparno Ghosh (her director in The Last Lear) and Deepa. It was Rituda who opened doors to rooms in my subconscious mind, that I never knew existed. And then Deepa's faith in me to play this timid terrified wife from Punjab who's suddenly thrown into a marriage of inconvenience, made me feel very challenged. Mouthing the Punjabi dialogues was especially difficult," said Preity.

Preity even suggested that Deepa dub her lines. "But Deepa was adamant. She told me, 'You can do it. It's not Preity. But it's Chand. So let Chand's voice take over.' I did exactly that. She also taught me that looking vulnerable was not just a matter of the face. It was the whole body language. I had to slump over in despair. Very difficult for a girl like me who always walks with her head held high."

People are telling Preity that they can't believe she has given this performance. "I don't know how to react to something like this. It's like someone being told she has suddenly slimmed down. It implies that I was fat and ugly earlier. Does it mean I didn't know how to act earlier? But I do know one thing.

I want my friends Adi (Chopra) and Karan (Johar) to see Heaven On Earth.
They've always said I look too upper-class to play an oppressed woman."

That's what I was thinking. This might focus more on the abuse and the emotional/personal consequences rather than legal ones.
