Paani Puri is essentially the love story of Vikas and Divya. True to the adage that opposites attract, cupid strikes these two diametrically opposite individuals. Vikas is a struggling actor hailing from an over the top Punjabi family, which believes that the human voice is a gift of god and must be used in variable octaves. While Divya, who works for an MNC comes from a refined Oriya family which feels that the human voice is the sound of the human mind and therefore one should utter any kind of sound only for a purpose.

Divya and Vikas have diverse personalities. While the former is a stickler for perfection, the latter takes pride in being messy. Bigger challenges lie ahead of the couple, as Vikas has to seek the approval of the Paani family for their alliance. Divya and Vikas do settle into marital bliss but little do they know what fate has in store for the future.

Circumstances force these two families, as different as chalk and cheese, to live under one roof. Out of no choice the Paani family moves into the Puri household. What ensues is a competition between the 'Tango' of a fork and knife and the 'Tandav' of deft fingers in a plate of rice. Two families who wouldn't see eye to eye otherwise are forced to adapt to the lifestyles of their in laws for the sake of happiness of their respective children.

Vikas Puri: A middle class 28 yrs old man. Brought up in a close knit warm household. Has a lighter way of looking at life has been part of his growing up thanks to his parents and their approach to life.

He is clumsy and carefree and often creates trouble but always has good intentions. He thinks he is good and knows it all and now all he need a big break to show the world what he is all about.

Vikas's house is the adda where all his friends and parents friends and relatives flock and a motley mix of visitors are forever savoring his moms superb cooking. Chai, samosas, jalebi galore. A fun loving guy he often slips into various characters that he is aspiring to play or has played. A foodie and a die hard film buff he believes that that life is one big stage.

What attracts him to Divya Paani, daughter of a rich businessman, is the fact that they are as opposite as opposites can be and before he knows what hit him he falls in love with Divya.

Divya Paani: A pretty girl in her mid 20s, Divya works as an executive in an MNC as a PR head. Gets swayed by Vikas when her company decided to sponsor an experimental play that Vikas's group has put together. Inquisitive, a die hard romantic and a firm believer in signs, she takes all decisions ranging from trivial to important on her interpretation of the signs.

She loves to dance and on her various trips abroad has learnt a variety of dances styles like the tango, salsa, cha cha cha etc. She is in complete contrast to her husband whose preferred and only style of dance is the free style. Vikas to her is an enigma who she keeps trying to decipher but one who springs on her a new shade of his personality each day, she loves him for the whole new world he has opened up for her.

Mr. Dharmesh Puri: A happy go lucky, self made man owning his own transport company called "Point to Point Roadways". He takes a keen interest in matters concerning his area & society which has made him very popular among all the residents.

One with no hang up's in life he is always willing to help anyone in need out it & goes out of his way tapping into his resources resources to get the work done. He shares a "can't live with and without you" equation with his wife Savita. He often blames his obesity on his wife's cooking that he just cannot resist. He is an expert at making jibes at his son who he thinks as a complete "lallu".

Mrs. Savita Puri: A typical middle class Punjabi housewife who loves her family. Believes that everything is by the grace of God. Loves to cook for her family. Has very basic needs in life and is grateful for all that she has. Space and privacy are both alien concepts to her, her world revolves around her family. Highly superstitious she believes in variety of religious gods & gurus & often gets confused by their conflicting recommendations.

Pradyumna Paani: A retired Oriya bureaucrat who believes that life is all about lifestyle. Has low tolerance level for sound and carelessness. Speaks little, as he believes that words spoken should be backed by research and not spoken frivolously.

Very proud to have his elder daughter Sonam married to a rich banker Vihang. Is visibly upset with her younger daughter Divya's choice but is also sure that she will realize her folly soon and is waiting for that day. Being an ex RAW officer he is inquisitive of just about everything. This habit of his usually throws people off guard. Spends his evenings at his favorite club chatting about the world & country's policies and playing golf.

Veena Paani: Blushes everytime someone compliments her on her young looks. At most times she is composed and courteous, but all hell breaks loose when she sees the slightest speck of dust in the house. Is a great host and is well known for hosting the most talked about parties.

She has impeccable manners and tinkers a silver bell to summon the servants. Is an excellent bridge player but she can't do without her Tarot cards. She decides everything on the basis of the reading her Tarot gives her.
