HANUMAN
Other names- Hanooman, Hanumana
Veer (brave) Hanuman was a minister and friend of Sugreev. He is the greatest devotee of Shri Ram, ever at his service and very devoted to the Lord. Hanuman?s father was Kesari and his mother Anjana. She was an Apsara (a celestial damsel) called Punjiksthala in her earlier life. As a result of a curse, she was born as a vanara, in the house of a vanara king called Kunjar. Hanuman is also called pavanputra (son of the wind god). Vanarraj (king of the monkeys) Kesari once undertook a severe penance and at the end, Brahma asked him for a boon. Kesari said, ?I want a son as strong and powerful as the wind God, Vayu.? Brahm granted his wish.
Different stories are told as to Hanuman's birth. One is that at the time that Anjana was worshipping Lord Shiva, elsewhere, Dashrath, the king of Ayodhya, was performing the Putrakama Yagna in order to have children. As a result, he received some sacred pudding, to be shared by his three wives, leading to the births of Lord Ram, Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughn. By divine ordinance, a kite snatched a fragment of that pudding, and dropped it while flying over the forest where Anjana was engaged in worship. Vayu, the Hindu deity of the wind, delivered the falling pudding to the outstretched hands of Anjana, who consumed it. Hanuman was born to her as a result.

Being Anjana's son, Hanuman is also called Anjaneya (pronounced Aanjan?), which literally means "arising from Anjani".

Hanuman, in one interpretation, is also considered as the incarnation of Shiv or reflection of Shiva. Others, such as followers of Dvaita consider Hanuman to be the son of Vayu or a manifestation of Vayu, the god of wind. When Ravana tried to enter the Himalayas (the abode of Shiva) Nandi stopped him and Ravana called Nandi a monkey. Nandi in return cursed Ravana: monkeys would help destroy him. In the process word monkey along with panchaksram "Om Namashivaya" hit Shiva. Shiva, to give respect to his devotee, took the form of a vanara, Hanuman.

Hanuman was born in Aanjan village, present-day Gumla in the state of Jharkhand in the Treta Yug.

When he was but a baby, Hanuman saw the rising sun. He thought that the orange red ball was a ripe fruit and he jumped up to pluck it and eat it. In a moment, he swallowed up the sun.

There was chaos everywhere and the entire creation was in an unstable state. The enraged Indra (King of the Devas) threw his thunderbolt at Hanuman. The child fell in a swoon on the ground.
Now when Vayu saw this he decided to hold back all winds. The entire world was at standstill. Brahm and the Gods, along with Indra, came and greeted Hanuman and blessed him that his body would be as strong as a thunderbolt and that he would always be unconquerable. Hanuman had been injured on his chin. A small chibuk (scar) is called Hanu hence his name became Hanuman.

On ascertaining Surya, the Hindu deity of the sun to be an all-knowing teacher, Hanuman raised his body into an orbit around the sun and requested that Surya accept him as a student. But Surya refused, claiming that as he always had to be on the move in his chariot, it would be impossible for Hanuman to learn effectively. Undeterred by Surya's refusal, Hanuman enlarged his body; he placed one leg on the eastern ranges and the other on the western ranges and with his face turned toward the sun, made his request again. Pleased by his persistence, Surya accepted. Hanuman then moved (backwards, to remain facing Surya) continuously with his teacher, and learned all of the latter's knowledge. When Hanuman then requested Surya to quote his "guru-dakshina" (teacher's fee), the latter refused, saying that the pleasure of teaching one as dedicated as him was the fee in itself. But Hanuman insisted, and it was then that Surya asked him to help his (Surya's) spiritual son Sugriv Hanuman's choice of Surya as his teacher is said to signify Surya as a Karma Saakshi, an eternal witness of all deeds.

As a child he was very mischievous and would playfully throw away the prayer vessels of the sages of the forest, thus disturbing their religions rites. They cursed him to forget how powerful and energetic he was. "You will have no recall of your prowess and ability. Only when another person reminds you of it, you will be aware of your endless power and immeasurable energy."
The curse is highlighted in Kishkindha Kanda and Sundara Kanda when Jambavanth reminds Hanuman of his abilities and encourages him to go and find Sita. Hanuman accomplishes his task.

Due to his virtues and intellectual ability, Hanuman became a minister in Sugreeva's court and his good friend and companion. Bali was Sugreeva's elder brother who became his foe and was eager to kill him. To escape the wrath of Bali, Sugreev ran around everywhere in the world but Bali chased him wherever he went. Then Hanuman suggested that Sugreev should go to Rishyamukha Mountain, which was out of bounds for Bali because of a curse on him put by Sage Matanga. So Sugreev set up his residence at Rishyamukh Mountain. Ram arrived there in search of Sita who had been taken away by Ravana; he was wandering through the forests with his brother Lakshman, to find out where Sita had gone.

Having seen Rama and Lakshmana, Sugriva sends Hanuman to ascertain their identities. Hanuman approaches the two brothers in the guise of a brahmin. His first words to them are such that Rama says to Lakshmana that none could speak the way the brahmin did unless he or she had mastered the Veda. He notes that there is no defect in the brahmin's countenance, eyes, forehead, brows or any limb. He points out to Lakshmana that his accent is captivating, adding that even an enemy with sword drawn would be moved. He praises the disguised Hanuman further, saying that sure success awaited the king whose emissaries were as accomplished as he was.

When Rama introduces himself, Hanuman reveals his own identity and falls prostrate before Rama, who embraces him warmly. Thereafter, Hanuman's life becomes interwoven inextricably with that of Rama. Hanuman then brings about a friendship and alliance between Rama and Sugriva; Rama helps Sugriva regain his honour and makes him king of Kishkindha Sugreev promised to help Ram in his search for Sita and sent his monkey spies to search in all directions. The responsibility of the search in the South was with Angad, Hanuman & Jambvant. Acknowledging the abilities of Hanuman, Shri Ram gave him his ring which had his name etched on it, so that whenever he found Sita, he could prove to her that he was an envoy of Ram.

Yogini Satyavati and Sampati, Jatayu?s brother whom they met by the seashore, gave them the information that Sita was in Lanka, under Ravana?s captive care. Now all of them began to ponder how they would cross the ocean to Lanka. It was then that Jambavat reminded the silent Hanuman about his immeasurable power, which he had forgotten about. Oh! Brave Hanuman, recall your celestial power bestowed on you.?
Hanuman then recollects his own powers, enlarges his body and flies across the ocean. On his way, he encounters a mountain that rises from the sea, proclaims that it owed his father a debt and asks him to rest a while before proceeding. Not wanting to waste any time, Hanuman thanks the mountain and carries on. He then encounters a sea-monster who challenges him to enter her mouth. When Hanuman outwits her, she admits that it was merely a test of his courage. Finally on killing Simhika, a shadow-eater rakshasa, he reached Lanka.

Hanuman reaches Lanka and marvells at its beauty. He also regrets that it might be destroyed if Rama has to do battle with Ravan

He saw Sita sitting depressed in captivity in the Ashokvatika and in the silence of the night, dropped Ram ring near her, while hiding in a tree overhead. He then began to narrate the story of Ram. Sita heard him and asked him to come before her.Hanuman reveals his identity to her, reassures her that Rama has been looking for her, and uplifts her spirits. He offers to carry her back to Rama; but she refuses his offer, saying it would be an insult to Rama as his honour is at stake.

After meeting Sita, Hanuman begins to wreak havoc, gradually destroying the palaces and properties of Lanka. He killed many rakshasas, including Jambumalli and Akshaa. To subdue him, Ravan son Indrajit uses the Brahmastra. Though immune to the astra (weapon), Hanuman, out of respect to Brahma, allows himself be bound by the weapon. Deciding to use the opportunity to meet the renowned ruler of Lanka, and to assess the strength of Ravan hordes, Hanuman allows the rakshasa warriors to parade him through the streets. He conveys Ram message of warning to the powerful rakshasa, and demands the safe return of Sita. He also informs Ravan that Ram would be willing to forgive him if he returns Sita honourably. Enraged, Ravan orders Hanuman's execution. However, Ravan brother Vibheeshan intervenes, pointing out that it is against the rules of engagement to kill a messenger. Ravan then orders that Hanuman's tail be lit instead. As Ravan forces attempted to wrap cloth around his tail, Hanuman begins to lengthen it. After frustrating them for a while, he allows it, then escapes from his captors, and with his tail on fire he burns down large parts of Lanka. After extinguishing his flaming tail in the sea, he heads back to Ram.
Sitaji bestowed on him, Ashta Siddhi (Eight spiritual powers) and Nav Siddhi (nine spiritual powers). Hanuman took Sita's message and told it to Ram on his return from Lanka. Ram decided at once to set out with his army for Lanka. With the help of the Vanar army, a bridge was made to span the ocean and they crossed over to Lanka, Vibheeshan came away from Ravan court to join Ram army

The battle between Ram and Ravan began. After a fierce fighting scene, Lakshman fell into a faint because of the weapon used by Meghnad. The vaid (physician), Sushena recommended the Sanjeevani herb that grew from the Dronagiri mountain in the Himalayas to revive him. Ravan realises that if Lakshmana dies, a distraught Rama would probably give up, and so has his uncle Kalnaimi tempt Hanuman away with luxury. However, Hanuman is tipped off by a crocodile (actually a celestial being under a curse) and kills the Rakshasa.Hanuman flew across the skies to reach the mountain but he could not recognize which plant was Sanjeevani. So he picked up the entire mountain and brought it to Lanka. As soon as the Vaid (physician) Sushena used the herb on Lakshman, he woke up from his fainting spell and sat up.An emotional Ram hugs Hanuman, declaring him as dear to him as his own beloved brother Bharat. Next day, Meghnad was killed by Lakshman in the battlefield. Kumbhakarn was also killed.
In another incident during the war (the one that brought about Hanuman's Panchamukh form), Ram and Lakshmana are captured by the rakshasa, Mahiravana (and his brother Ahiravana), a powerful practitioner of black magic and the dark arts, who holds them captive in his palace in Patalpuri or Patala (the nether world). Searching for them, Hanuman reaches Patala whose gates are guarded by a very young creature called Makardhwaja (known also as Makar-Dhwaja or Magar Dhwaja), part fish and part Vanara
The story of Makardhwaja's birth is that although Hanuman remained celibate all his life, Makardhwaja was his son; when Hanuman had extinguished his burning tail in the ocean, unknown to him, a drop of his sweat had fallen in as well. Swallowing this sweat droplet, a fish then becomes pregnant. This is discovered when the fish is brought to Mahiravana's kitchen for cooking. Mahiravana raises the child, entrusting him to guard Patalpuri's gates. Hanuman is unaware of this. Although Makardhwaja knows his father is Hanuman, he had never seen him. So, when Hanuman introduces himself to Makardhwaja, he seeks Hanuman's blessings, but decides to fight him as part of his duty as guardian of the gates. Hanuman subdues him and ties him up before entering Patalpuri to rescue Ram and Lakshmana.

Upon entering Patala, Hanuman discovers that to kill Mahiravana, he must simutaneously extinguish five lamps burning in different directions. Hanuman assumes the Panchamukha or five-faced form of Sri Varaha facing north, Sri Narasimha facing south, Sri Garuda facing west, Sri Hayagriva facing the sky and his own facing the east, and blows out the lamps. Thus killing rakshasas, Hanuman rescues Ram and Lakshmana. Afterwards, Rama asks Hanuman to crown Makardhwaja king of Patalpuri.

Seating Ram Lakshman on his shoulders, Hanuman came back to Lanka to continue the battle. In the end, Ram killed Ravan. Vibheeshan was crowned king of Lanka. Riding on the Pushpak Viman, Ram, Sita and Lakshman returned to Ayodhya. Rama introduced Bharat to Hanuman and said, "Bharat, Hanuman is as dear to me as you are."

Shortly after ram is crowned Emperor upon his return to Ayodhya, Ram decides to ceremoniously reward all his well-wishers. At a grand ceremony in his court, all his friends and allies take turns being honoured at the throne. Hanuman too goes up, but without desiring a reward. Seeing Hanuman come up to him, an emotionally overwhelmed Ram embraces him warmly, declaring that he could never adequately honour or repay Hanuman for the help and services he received from the noble Vanara. Sita, however, insists that Hanuman deserved honour more than anyone else, and asks him to seek a gift. Upon Hanuman's request, Sita gives him a necklace of precious stones adorning her neck. When he receives it, Hanuman immediately takes it apart, and peers into each stone. Taken aback, many of those present demand to know why he was destroying the precious gift. Hanuman answers that he was looking into the stones to make sure that Ram and Sita are in them, because if they are not, the necklace is of no value to him. At this, a few mock Hanuman, saying his reverence and love for Ram and Sita could not possibly be as deep as he was portraying. In response, Hanuman tears his chest open, and everyone is stunned to see Ram and Sita literally in his heart. Hanuman was committed to serve Rama, so he stayed by his side

After the victory of Ram over Ravan, Hanuman went to the Himalayas to continue his worship of the Lord. There he scripted a version of the Ramayana on the Himalayan mountains using his nails, recording every detail of Ram deeds. When Maharishi Valmiki visited him to show him his own version of the Ramayana, he also saw Lord Hanuman's version and became very disappointed.

When Hanuman asked him the cause of his sorrow, he said that his version, which he had created very laboriously was no match for the splendour of Hanuman's, and would therefore, go ignored. At this, Hanuman took those rocks on one shoulder and Valmiki on the other, and went to the sea. There he threw his own version into the sea, as an offering to Ram. This version, called the Hanumad Ramayana, has been unavailable since then.

Maharishi Valmiki was so taken aback that he said he would take another birth to sing the glory of Hanuman which he had understated in his version. Later, one tablet is said to have floated ashore during the period of Mahakavi Kalidas, and hung at a public place to be deciphered by scholars. Kalidasa is said to have deciphered it and recognised that it was from the Hanumad Ramayana recorded by Hanuman in an extinct script, and considered himself very fortunate to see at least one pada of the stanza.

When his avatar (incarnation) on earth came to an end, Ram bestowed immortality on Hanuman to live forever on earth and look after the devotees of Ram. As soon as a devotee remembers Ramabhakt Hanuman, he assumes a minute from and reaches there to help them.

Hanuman is also considered to be the brother of Bhim, since both are born from Vayu. During the Pandavas' exile, he appears disguised as a weak and aged monkey before his half-brother, the Pandav prince Bhim, in order to subdue his arrogance and teach him the value of humility. Bhim enters a field where Hanuman is lying with his tail blocking the way. Bhim, unaware of his identity, tells him to remove it. In return, Hanuman tells him to remove it himself. Bhim tries all his might but is unable to do it. Being the mighty strong warrior, he realizes that this being must be much more powerful and greater than him. So he asks him for his real identity. This is when Hanuman gets up and reveals his identity, and the two brothers then hug each other. Upon Bhim request, Hanuman is also said to have enlarged himself and shown him the same size in which he had crossed the sea to go to Lanka, looking for Sita.

More significantly, during the great battle of Kurukshetra, Arjun entered the battlefield with the flag of Hanuman on his chariot The incident that led to this was an earlier encounter between Hanuman and Arjuna; Hanuman appeared as a small talking monkey before Arjuna at Rameshwaram, where Sri Ram had built the great bridge to cross over to Lanka to rescue Sita. Upon Arjuna's wondering out aloud at Sri Ram taking the help of monkeys rather than building a bridge of arrows, Hanuman (in the form of the little monkey) challenged him to build one capable of bearing him alone, and Arjun, unaware of the monkey's true identity accepted. Hanuman then proceeded to repeatedly destroy the bridges made by Arjun who became depressed and suicidal, and decided to take his own life. Vishnu then appeared before them both, chiding Arjun for his vanity, and Hanuman for making the accomplished warrior Arjun feel incompetent. As an act of penitence, Hanuman decided to help Arjun by stabilising and strengthening his chariot during the imminent great battle. Legend goes that Hanuman is one of the three people to have heard the Gita from Lord Sri Krishna himself, the other two being Arjun and Sanjay.

What better evidence can there be for the devotion of Ramabhakt Hanuman, that today there are far more temples dedicated to Hanuman than to Ram in our country! Hanuman Chalisa (prayer to Hanuman) is read by many people daily in India. Hanuman is worshipped on Tuesdays (this day is connected with the planet Mangal (Mars) and Hanuman is associated with strength and force which are also characteristics of Mars) and Saturdays (because he is the only one who could defeat Planet Shani (Saturn) and so worshipping him on Saturdays removes the malefic of Saturn from the horoscope). Hanuman is still believed to be living the Himalayan ranges and is immersed in the devotion to his dear Ram. The ultimate image that portrays the devotion of Hanuman towards Ram is when he tore open his heart with his claws and
the image of Ram and Sita was seen in it.
