Greater friendship hath no actor than he work in the film of a friend.

We are talking about Abhishek Bachchan and Goldie Behl, whose friendship dates back to 1982, when they were kids on the sets of Pukaar in Goa that was produced by Goldie's father Ramesh Behl and starred Abhishek's father, Amitabh Bachchan.

The two boys, fascinated by a sword fight sequence, later picked up the wooden weapons and attacked each other enthusiastically in play. But the swords broke, they were admonished before the unit, and packed off sulking to the hotel. "That was the day Goldie decided he would make a film and I would act in it," recalled Abhishek as the two got together for BT to celebrate Friendship Day.

"We agreed to throw our fathers off the sets," continued Goldie, "but lifted the ban when we realised we would need them at every stage of our careers. From that day, Abhi and I never thought of anything else but films." Goldie's debut as director, Bas Itna Sa Khawab Hai, had best friend Abhi in it. And now, his second film Drona has Abhi in the lead again. "Ironically," laughed Goldie, "this film has a lot of sword fighting sequences."

Their growing up gang included their respective sisters Shweta and Shristi, plus Uday Chopra, Farhan and Zoya Akhtar. "Watching films was the high of our lives," revealed Goldie. "And though we had a simple upbringing, being the son of the country's superstar wasn't easy for Abhi."

The Big B's big boy joined in, "Holidays were fun. We used to crave to do normal things. Goldie was in Mayo. And everytime he came down, we would beg his mom to let us run errands, like going to the grocer or the bakery." Goldie suggested, "I guess for Abhi it was a walk of freedom, without any unwanted attention." Another favourite memory is the Hindi lessons they got from the Big B himself. "Amit uncle would makes us read fans' letters written in Hindi and explain the contents to him," recalled Goldie. "It used to be such fun."

Boyhood crushes is another thing the two friends shared. "We both had a crush on Zeenat Aman," admitted Abhishek. "But I was also crazy about Parveen Babi and Tina aunty," added Goldie. "I used to just stare at them when they would shoot with dad. And I would get tongue-tied in front of the gorgeous Zeenat! She was dad's good friend and would come home, that's when I broke the ice with her." When the boys grew up into men and childhood crushes became serious affairs, both married actresses in whom they had found the right girls. "Sonali (Bendre) was my friend. We would hang out together. And I could sense that Goldie seriously loved her," said Abhishek. He now refers to the lovely actress of the late 1990s as Sonali bhaabs. Whereas the beautiful Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to Goldie is just bhabi. Has marriage changed their friendship? It has. Marriage has made the four of them bond closer.
