Can Television Actors make it in Bollywood? And I dont mean 2-bit roles...I mean as fully fledged Bollywood Actor?
Of course the advocates will say, of course... Shahruk Khan being the prime example, but that was another time and bollywood as well as telelvision has changed considerably.
I remember the early days of telelvision, though admitted I was fairly young, television actors had good parts, not run of the mill but sometimes very new, fresh stuff . If you take Seema Kapoor who started of in Hasratein, which went on to be gound breaking stuff (with it's first on screen kiss for telelvision), she is now staring as a saas in a daily. No disrespect to the daily but it just does not compare to the quality of the yesteryears...
My point being, back in SRK's days...telelvision actors were of a high calibre too...(we still have some, but they are few and far between these days...) , the shows were also good and so the transition into bollywood would seem smoother...producers would see your work and if they liked you, they could cast you...
Now from the pick of K serial actors and some others working in the same factory produced shows...are producers offered the same quality? And therefore are they willing to take television actors in their films?
There is undoubtedly nowadays a stigma attached to working in televison, as a friend once said to me...the more you work and television, the more you lose your star quality. Why is this? To some degree, it is not the sctors fault, but perhaps the quality of the productions they star in that determines their value. Saas-Bahu drama's are looked upon quite unfavourably, perhaps it is the opinion that those that act in such shows, simply cant make it as a bollywood star.
We can take our pick of television actors who had tried and mostly failed to get a successful launch in bollywood, having to settle for side roles. Is this worth it? When you are adored and worshipped by your fans for the work you have done in television, is it worth the heartbreak, the criticisms and the prejudice against you just for a chance to make it in bollywood?
Undoubtedly, not all have "failed" as such...we have a few new stars venturing into bollywood such as Rajeev Khandelwaal and Shabbir Ahuwalia, but could either make it in a solo or paralelle lead in a commercial film?
Is it possible for actors to work in both telelvison and Cinema?...and not in telelvision as in reality shows such as Dus ka Dum and the like...but actual shows? It seems that there is a fear of television within the Film industry...why has Prachi Desai been told not to work in television anymore by her producers? Are they scared of her ruining her Star image?
I would love to hear your opinions on this...

Rimaaaaa aunty šŸ˜‰šŸ˜†(change ur dob asap!šŸ˜†) yeh kya horaha hai aaj?? so many thoughtful posts..im surprised😊 only jokingšŸ˜†šŸ˜†
ok back to the topic😊
I agree with you, yesteryears quality was way better. Nowadays when I watch a film or tv show, Im morelikely to doze off or leave it and catch a repeat, whereas If im watching an older movie or some old show it has more freshness, and u can relate to them better, they keep u interested. Personally i used to watch more tv before than now. Its the truth.
The difference now is there r far more television actors, which I think puts producers off from choosing actors for lead roles. Rajeev Khandelwaal is lucky and havent watched Aamir yet so I dont know how its worked out for him.
I was gonna say that Jay is right its 80% hard work and 20% luck cos u reli need luck by ur side too.
Its defo not the actors fault that they r working in tv serials and lose tht quality... there r big casts and the focus is not particularly on u screen time is not much as u would get in a film.
I'd like to say this but the script matters too. Also the filmmaker u work with matters. Its a risky thing to jump from tv to a solo film. I guess this is why Shabbir is doing multi starrer films. I would like to see my fav tv actors going into bollywood. But the truth is bollywood is like that its either a flop or a hit. Also, there can be many reasons for a flop...script was poor, acting was bad, diretion was bad etc. Id like to see my fav tv actors in a film but as long as they perform good, thts enough for me. Bcos I wouldnt want them to do a solo and not give a good performance. That would be upsetting.....
And once agen thanks for this postšŸ˜‰

Very well said...today Television and Cinema has change so much...a show in TV better it soap or reality show, it made for grab TRP and advertiser...so they made a show just following what the audience wants..so it's really poor in quality, it's just to make commercial...so with the condition of that...of course TV star can't get opportunity enough to show off their talents and qualities...

And If you see someone daily in TV...maybe it can be so boring...and another reason is if you can see someone daily in TV why he/she should spend money just to see him/her in theater with the same quality acting...

Even in Hollywood...only there is a little few actors or actress that both successful in TV and Cinema...it really needs hardworking to proof you're abilities, talents to be a big star in Cinema...coz someone can't appear daily in theater so it needs many combination to make it big in Cinema...

Well, i totally agree that Television or rather Hindi serials are not what they once were... Forget Hasratein, i remember series like Tara, Campus, Banegi Apni Baat, Parampara, etc that ran for years with unique and interesting storylines and brilliant actors.. even sitcoms like Filmi Chakkar and Hum Paanch had viewers hooked.. I was defintely young at that time but old enough to remember and watch. Honestly, i have never been drawn or hooked to saas-bahu sagas... i only ever watched Kavyanjali cuz i really like the lead pair and now, Kayamath cuz i LOVE the lead pair (hehe, dont we all!?!) In fact, u guys know how we cribbed, threw a fit and were just plain frustrated when the series (KYMT) took some illogical twists and turns... Fact remains that TV cannot be the same like it was before. Today, its all about the MONEY!

Quality can take a back seat. Whether its about getting a primetime slot, good advertisors and sponsors or even garnering TRP's, big bucks seem to be the driving force and only reason why so many production houses are investing in Television and churning out or rather regurgitating the same stories with different actors and different titles... Ekta or rather Balaji is no exception.
Even Reality shows that took television by storm and seemed all the rage have now become insipid, boring and monotonous. Even, there its all about the money. Whether its giving away big bucks or making them.
In fact, in the recent past the only serial I RECALL that struck a chord with viewers of all generations alike was Astitva (on Zee).. (and no, i didnt watch it but i did read alot about how it made for good viewing at the time)
So you see Rima, serial quality be damned. I dont even think its about compromise anymore. Commercialization is what its all about. How commercially viable your product is and how lucrative the returns on your investment. As long as everyone in the "chain" benefits (which they are), nobody is complaining!
Oh yeah, except us poor viewers. But since when did that matter?
