After watching today's episode there is a big question raised in my mind... What is the expectation of these mentors?? šŸ˜• They first say, they want a unique voice.. Like Ashaji said, one can many unique voices, but its important that they maintain sur and taal..

And they say, they are not expecting a classical singer as they may not make their mark in the film industry... Today we saw, Shayon getting the golden key and we all know that Shujat was much better than Shayon.. So, are we looking for just voice quality or a complete singer?? šŸ˜•

We all know that there are various techniques these days for correcting the sur etc.. So, why have a singing contest?? We can better have some voice quality tests and test the emotions.. Its enough to have a mediocre singer with good voice quality.. Isnt it?? šŸ˜•

i think its always
1. Sur and Taal.
2. voice quality
3. Overall impact even with some missed surs..
So there is no hard and fast rule... but if a singer cant sing in sur and cant stay with the rhythm.. they have no business to be singing. in first place...
But heres what i would say for SRGMP.. Voice quality should override sur taal at times if there is no basic sense of sur and taal...this is because these are raw singers who have sing in front of maestros like AB who is there solely for the purpose of making ruthlessly frank comments.. which in a way is good but that does little to the confidence of the participants.... so.. voice quality rules...😊

The Main purpose of this contest thing is to generate revenue. Previously in the not so olden times the singers were auditioned and tested and given a chance to sing.

Anu,there is too much emphasis on voice quality. It does count, but what use is it without Sur and Taal? They may correct the sur flaws by technology but such singers cannot last long.Listen to Sonu,Shreya and other successful singers. They never lose sur on stage.
I wonder why they denegrate classical singing.Do we not need good semi-classical songs and singers today? We do have some classical melodies--though far and few between-even in the age of today's fast, loud songs.Hope they at least say something about the need of classical training for being successful singers.

In this season of SRGMP, it seems that voice quality is being stressed above everything else. At times it seems like sur/taal do not matter any more as long as the voice quality is unique. At one point, someone mentioned that sur can be perfected by means of computers/technology in today's playback industry. So does that mean that these singers don't need to be hitting the right notes, or singing in tune, as long as they have an extraordinary voice, a voice that's different from today's playback singers? The judges claim that they want a voice that can outshine all, a singer who can stand above the rest, and excel in today's music industry. Well today's singers ... Sonu Nigam, Shreya Goshal, Sukhwinder, Udit Narayan, etc ... they seem to be well aware of perfecting sur, hitting the right notes, and all the other technicalities of music. Do these judges think that its enough to have a unique voice, regardless of the fact if the singer has any true knowledge of music or not?

They criticized Atif Aslam a few episodes back for not having any knowledge of sur. Well does it matter? I hear his voice in Bakhuda Tumhi Ho (Kismat Konnection), which is a beautiful song. His voice along with Alka Yagnik's does wonders in that song. Of course due to present technology, all the notes are right, the song is perfect. Then why criticize the singer? He's doing well in the industry, and above all ... he has a huge fan following.

In other words, my question is, should the winner of this competition be someone who has a different voice, a voice that hasn't been heard before, regardless of the fact whether he/she has any knowledge of music or should it be a singer who has a classical-based background, who knows the ins and outs of music, who is able to create magic with his/her perfection of sur/taal. And if these judges are trying to find one person who has it all ... what makes them think they can? It seems like some contestants are in the competition due to their voice quality while others are there due to their knowledge of music. Do you think by the end of the competition we'll have a singer who has both, the unique voice and the right notes?

Last season, the everlasting argument was whether the competition's goal is to discover a versatile, all-round singer, or a singer who excels in his genre, while he maybe mediocre in other genres ... and the issue was never settled, but the argument remained throughout the season. I really hope the judges are able to give this topic some thought and clarify what they're true goal is. Unfortunately, the show concentrates on so many other things besides the actual singing that this doesn't seem to be anywhere in the near future. So instead of mocking Himesh's hair, for once, I decided that maybe we could discuss this on the forum. I'm sorry the post is so long, bear with me.

In my opinion we should remember what Shankar said yesterday, Perhaps that explains what they should be looking for. The winner should have a unique voice but at the same time must sing in sur taal and shoudl understand nuances of music.
I must say there is serious dfference of opinion among mentors which is understandable going by the fact that other than Shankar they have serious handicap in understanding music.
Voice quality is fine but can't be at the cost of sur and understanding of music, so SUR RULES.
Other things can be polished and teached but some one who is besura at age of 23-24 is not likely to be a candidate of choice.
Also we must remember the best musicians today are ARR, ID and SEL. They will certainly NOT make a besura sing even she is koel or chatak.

Music directors may emphasize sur etc. when judging but the reality is otherwise. I was watching Khailash Kherji's interview and he said he was looking for a way to release an album. So he approached music directors. They told him they selected him solely on his voice quality because it was unlike any other they had before for Allah ke Bande.

For the current trends in playback singing voice quality comes first. Sur and taal can always be technically enhanced. Or singers can rest assured by taking retakes. Sunidhi Chauhan also started singing professionally at a very young age I'm pretty sure it was due to her voice quality than knowledge of sur.

Of course I believe otherwise voice quality makes an incomplete singer if knowledge of sur is lacking. But this view contradicts the reality of playback singing today.

I personally think sur and taal cannot be compromised..Voice quality comes next.....maybe sur and taal can be corrected technically, then how abt the harkats/nuances...can they also be added technically?and if a singer doesn't even hv knowledge of sur and taal how will he/she be able to sing songs with good harkats/even a slightly complicated tune?..howmany ever retakes they give, they can never get that kind of quality..some minus points can be hidden with music and technical stuff..But that is only so much.......
A HR with his voice quality can sing only certain type of songs, but Sonu Nigam with his training and talent can carry off any song....I thk voice quality is important but not at the cost of sur and taal....Kailash kher/sunidhi hv a unique voice quality but if they hadn't been in sur they wld've never got their first break 😊
A unique voice quality will get a person noticed....but sur and taal is wht will carry him in the long run and help him stick😊

My guess is that at the end of the competition we will hv a singer(??) who neither has good pakad over sur and taal nor a good voice quality...We will, however,hv a very gud dramabaaz who can match HR tear for tear and scream for scream and drama for drama šŸ˜†
