Writer-director Manoj Tyagi is a happy man. In three months from now, Madhur Bhandarkar would start shooting for JAIL. So, what's the connection here? Well, just like numerous Bhandarkar films in the past (SATTA, TRAFFIC SIGNAL, CORPORATE), Manoj Tyagi has done the screenplay for JAIL as well. Interestingly, Tyagi and Bhandarkar had worked together on JAIL 5-6 years back (when CHANDNI BAR had just released) but over the years, the project was kept on the backburner, only to remerge now.
'It would have been destined this way but I am happy that now we have got JAIL rolling', beams Tyagi who is also getting ready to begin his second film as a director after MUMBAI SALSA which was released last year, 'In the current scheme of things, we couldn't have JAIL look the same way as it did a few years back. So we worked on quite a few drafts over the months gone by before getting it ready to be translated on celluloid.'
Apparently Percept Picture Company as well as Madhur Bhandarkar thinks quite highly of him as a writer. This was quite apparent in the JAIL launch over the week gone by when Tyagi was called upon stage to kick start the event.
'It was unbelievable', recollects Tyagi, 'I had no clue that I would be asked to do the honors, especially in full media glare. Because of Madhur and Shailendra Singh (from Percept) around, I was expecting them to kick start the event. However, Mr. Singh had mentioned a few months back that he would want writers of his films to get the highest recognition too. He as well as Madhur has a high regard for writers and it was an honor for me to announce JAIL.'
In an industry where glamour rules the roost, Manoj Tyagi's excitement is quite reasonable since it signifies win for a profession (writing) which is finally getting the kind of recognition it deserves.
'True', exclaims Tyagi, 'So many filmmakers make statements around content being the kind but when it comes to recognition, actors hog away all the limelight. However, this gesture by Bhandarkar and Mr. Singh has justified a writer's standing in the industry. It's good to see our clan being recognized.'
Meanwhile Tyagi is also getting ready to begin his next directorial venture. It would either be a love story or a hard hitting film on the burning issue of environmental degradation.
