Chapter 1
There he was, lying in the hospital bed, looking ever so pale and fragile. The machines beeping loudly, wires and tubes hooked on to his body. He looked like trapped in a colossal of wires. LIFELESS. Yes, that was the word to depict him. The doctors and nurses were attending to him, and every second that passed, felt akin to ages. His head was bandaged due to a stern blow that caused Brain Hemorrhage, or so doctors' contemplated. His eyes seemed swollen, and his face appeared tearstained. Every time the machine beeped, she became more vigilant and petrified. She felt like every beep took him further away from her. Suddenly, she realized the situation, and fresh tears descended down her cheeks. She tried strictly to prevent crying, but her sobs and snivels could be heard in the vacant hallway. She looked at him through the peephole of the ICU door with darkness surrounding her, yet she was still glistening underneath the dimness of light.
She could feel her heart beating loudly like a drum, along with announcing to everyone that it is HER fault. He is in this situation because of HER. The mere notion of it made her cringe. Suddenly, she sensed someone's hand on her shoulder, but she did not fluster to glance. She was too absorbed looking at him. She felt herself being dragged away from the door. From HIM. She abruptly shuddered the hand away, and stood in the similar spot yet again.
"Bani" pleaded Pushkar in a concerned voice. Bani stared at him with compliable eyes.
"Jai" she uttered.
"Don't worry…. he will be all right" Pushkar whispered.
He motioned her towards the bench. She reluctantly agreed, but only after much convincing. She didn't feel like leaving him alone, as if this was the final time she will behold him. Bani's mind was permitting her to sit down since she had been standing ever since Jai had arrived from the Operation Theatre, but her heart was not in sync with her mind. She felt numb, worn out; furthermore, her energy and legs were succumbing. She moved towards the bench, sat down, and gawked blankly into the space.
At the closing of the hallway, Pia examined her best friend gradually, yet devastatingly collapsing. Losing this battle with her mind. She felt too mortified to face her. How could she not comprehend what was in Bani's mind. Bani's HEART. She believed that she betrayed Bani to some extent. Pia faked a valiant face, and walked towards the ICU room. As much as she felt agonized, she grasped that Bani needed her support. NOW. She approached closer to Bani and sat on the bench. Pushkar comprehended it, and left them in solitary.
Bani reserved her head on Pia's shoulder and hushed tears soared out of her eyes. Bani glimpsed at her henna colored palms gawkily. She was still in her wedding outfit, truly portraying "a damsel in distress". Bani's brain roared, "It is your fault that he is scuffling for his life". The guilt weighed profoundly on her heart. She was failing in the skirmish between her heart and mind. Steadily, with Jai's thoughts in her mind, she drifted off to a disturbed sleep on Pia's shoulder.
Enjoy..
