Manoj Kumar was the first to bash and trash the "Indians" living in the West whenever he got a chance. Lekin Subhash Ghai toh iis baat koh lekurr Manoj Kumar kah baap hain. His displeasure was not just limited to the adult NRI's but included their kids as well. He has always shown the NRI's and their kids as decadent, irresponsible people that smoked, drank, routinely did drugs, had no values other than money, were voyeuristic, and what have you.

Did Subhash Ghai ever realize that while we were routinely doing all of the above we NRI men and women were working a forty hour a week schedule, changing our kids diapers, cooking, doing the laundry, grocery shopping, driving our kids to various classes and sports activities, helping them with home work, and cleaning our own homes……toilets included. Wonder when Manjo Kumar or Subhash Ghai has done even one of these things for themselves……. ever?

Ektas_Angel ji you are right KJo and YashRaj are the only guys who have been realistic and fair in their portrayal of the NRIs. If being an NRI means I am viewed as the lust filled person devoid of any morals or Indian sanskriti so be it!!! At least I do things openly and don't hide in a closet. I have one wife, and don't bend the law to take on another, nor do I look for a couch every chance I get I am proud to be an NRI and our kids have turned out just fine no matter what Subhash Ghai has told us over and over again from Pardes to Yaadein.

DDLJ was somewhat realistic I guess at least for Bollywood. People may think I am dumb for bringing up this director, but I kind of like how Gurinder Chadha portrayed Asians in Bend it Like Bechkam. (Note: I hate Bride and Prejudice with a passion.)Some of it was stereotypical, but I related to more of it than the jingoistic Pardes and Namastey London, which made NRI's seem like completely awful people. Also I liked how the parents are portrayed in Mira Nair's The Namesake though I hate how she makes the kids seem completely annoying. There are so many people I know that I know from my parent's generation who came to the U.S. in the 70s and 80s who have the same experiences as Tabu's and Irfan's characters. Actually Mira does a good job overall in showing the NRI experience in both Monsoon Wedding and even Mississippi Masala though that has not been seen by alot of people.

How is an average british indian youngster like, if you don't mind me asking ....

I have no clue and have only these films as a point of reference ... the films again are unrealistic and stoop to worst stereotypes...

just curious ... bec even hollywood movies when potraying asian kids tends to show them as repressed with really orthodox families ... which i am positive is not true in real life..
