My friend had a lip piercing done about 3 weeks ago but it all went terribly wrong last Saturday night... the incident was posted yesterday in the Birmingham Mail and here is the online version:

Girl suffers lip piercing nightmare

Jul 2 2008 By Emma Cullwick

A TEENAGER from Birmingham says she nearly died after a lip piercing saw her rushed to hospital with blood "gushing" from the wound.

Jade Stokes, aged 16, from Kings Heath, warned other teenagers to think twice about having parts of their body pierced after her "nightmare come true".

The youngster said her ordeal began after having her lip pierced at Blue Banana, a store in the Pallasades Shopping Centre, Birmingham city centre.

"I had the piercing done and was told to go back two weeks later so they could change the stud to a smaller one, which they said was the normal procedure," she said.

"But after I went back to the shop the second time I developed a lump inside my lip and started getting really worried."

Jade sought advice from a different lip piercing company, which told her to change the stud back to the first one she had been given.

But that night, Jade awoke to find her mouth filled with blood.

"It was terrifying," she said. "I ran to the sink but the blood wouldn't stop gushing out of my mouth and then I started feeling dizzy and passed out."

Jade's terrified dad Kevin, 51, dialled 999 and Jade was rushed to Selly Oak Hospital where she kept falling in and out of consciousness.

Jade's mum, 50-year-old children's nursery owner Shirley, said: "When she came around she had blood all over her.

"She looked like she had been in a terrible car accident or something."

She said Jade, who was released from hospital the following day, is now taking iron tablets because of how much blood she lost.

"She will be left permanently scarred from the incident, both physically and mentally," she added.

Today, a spokesman for Blue Banana said a full investigation was under way.

"We are concerned that Jade makes a full recovery," he added.

"We will be investigating all the events before, during and after her piercing to determine what, if anything, could have been done better.

"We are not aware of anyone who has a 1.6mm hole in the lip – the size of a small pencil lead – losing enough blood to cause serious harm."

He said he believed Jade may have suffered a minor infection in the piercing.

It is known as a fashionable thing but please make sure that it'll work out... make sure where you are getting it done from is definitely safe and are sure that your skin will be able to react to it properly
