After a rather disappointing first half, with only three major hits in the form of JODHAA AKBAR, RACE and JANNAT, next Friday will see the first big clash of the second part of 2008. Interestingly, both the awaited releases, LOVE STORY 2050 and JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA feature newcomers, who come from well known Bollywood families! We are obviously referring to Harman Baweja and Imran Khan, the two good looking cool dudes! Coming to predictions, both the movies are of different genre and there is space for the two of them. However, being much lower budgeted and catering to the youths, JTYJN looks a winner in the longer run, though the initial rounds are likely to go to the rather expensive and well mounted LS 2050!
As we had predicted last week, the opening of Yash Raj Films' Saif-Rani starrer THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC in India turned out to be another disappointment for the premier production house, but more than that for the director and first time producer Kunal Kohli. The film had a below-the-mark (30-40 percent) start in Bombay and was by and large dull almost everywhere. The film did manage a decent weekend due to a multiplex pick up on Saturday and Sunday. A bigger setback came from the 'normally safe for YRF' Overseas market, more so as THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC is a feel good movie, a genre normally patronized in UK and also US. The film grossed poor collections of $259,872 from UK and $181,610 from the US. The bright side of things is that Yash Raj Film Distributors are themselves releasing the 20 crore film worldwide, it can still sneak through, but for that THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC will have to hold decently in the coming weeks.
The other two releases of the week, Fizz Entertainment's THODI LIFE THODA MAGIC and NFDC's VIA DARJEELING had poor to weak openings across India and with no improvement during the weekend, the outcome becomes obvious.
E. Niwas's Aftab, Ritesh and Ayesha starrer, DE TAALI, managed to collect 1.95 crores from Bombay, 41.20 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.12 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 1.20 lakhs from Patan, 5.30 lakhs from Rajkot, 2.05 lakhs from Jamnagar, 2.85 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 1.60 lakhs from Gandhidham, 9.50 lakhs from Pune, 1.55 lakhs from Solapur, 1.25 lakhs from Sangli, 5.20 lakhs from Nasik, 61 lakhs from Delhi, 11.55 lakhs from Noida, 7.65 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 5 lakhs from Kanpur, 9.20 lakhs from Lucknow, 2.60 lakhs from Agra, 1.50 lakhs from Meerut, 1.15 lakhs from Amritsar, 16.10 lakhs from Gurgaon, 7 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.65 lakhs from Panipat, 1 lakh from Jabalpur, 13 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.25 lakhs from Jabalpur, 7.30 lakhs from Indore, 9.35 lakhs from Jaipur, 1.55 lakhs from Bikaner, 18 (gross) from Hyderabad and 2.30 lakhs from Mangalore. Thanks to Ritesh Deshmukh and his Bombay circuit popularity, DE TAALI has netted a decent 7.50 crores in its opening week. We are saying decent because of the shoddy production value and the long delay in the making of DE TAALI! The film will ultimately fail, but the losses will not be so huge now.
Kumar Mangat's HAAL-E-DIL did not find many takers. The film collected 11.15 lakhs from Bombay, 2.40 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 6.40 lakhs from Delhi, 2 lakhs from Lucknow and 1.30 lakhs from Nagpur. Netting just about 50 lakhs from India, it is obvious that the Anil Devgan directed film turns out to be another disappointment, but definitely not for the debut making stars, especially Amita and Adhyayan, whose efforts have been appreciated.
As expected Pahlaj Nihalani's KHUSHBOO failed badly as the film featuring newcomers Rishi and Avantikka managed less than 20 lakhs in its first week. It is a trade disaster.
Though Shemaroo's Priyadarshan directed MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP fell heavily, the job has already been done! The film collected 55 lakhs from Bombay, 35.20 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1 lakh each from Patan and Palanpur, 1.80 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 3.60 lakhs from Rajkot, 2.10 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1.50 lakhs from Gandhidham, 3.70 lakhs from Pune, 1.75 lakhs from Solapur, 2.40 lakhs from Nasik, 60 lakhs (approx.) from Delhi city, 6.80 lakhs from Noida, 6.40 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 4.40 lakhs from Kanpur, 12.60 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.15 lakhs from Agra, 1.05 lakhs from Allahabad, 3.20 lakhs from Meerut, 1.25 lakhs from Bareilly, 2.70 lakhs from Aligarh, 11 lakhs from Gurgaon, 4.65 lakhs from Faridabad, 1 lakh from Panipat, 20.40 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.15 lakhs from Guwahati, 8 lakhs (approx.) from Nagpur, 1.65 lakhs from Amravati, 1.45 lakhs from Akola, 1.10 lakhs from Dhule, 1 lakh from Raipur, 1.20 lakhs from Durg, 1.10 lakhs from Wardha, 1.15 lakhs from Chandrapur, 5.70 lakhs from Indore, 18 lakhs from Jaipur, 1.20 lakhs from Bikaner, 11 lakhs (gross) from Hyderabad , 1.10 lakhs from Aurangabad and 1.45 lakhs from Mangalore. As can be seen, despite the big fall, the second week collections of the Akshay-Genelia starrer are reasonable and more importantly from across India. With another 5.65 crores, MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP has netted 21.50 crores in two weeks from India. The film not only crosses the previous highest total for a Priyadarshan-Akshaye Khanna project (HUNGAMA) but is now an average to above average fare in India. The film has also fared very well in the UK grossing $485,018.
With another big fall in its third week, the fate of SARKAR RAJ is now clear. It fails to emulate even a portion of the super success that its first edition (SARKAR) managed, both critically and commercially! During the week, SARKAR RAJ collected 47 lakhs from Bombay, 10.25 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.15 lakhs from Jamnagar, 3.10 lakhs from Pune, 1.10 lakhs from Nasik, 32.85 lakhs from Delhi, 5.15 lakhs from Noida, 2.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.15 lakhs from Kanpur, 6.25 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.30 lakhs from Agra, 7.65 lakhs from Gurgaon, 2 lakhs from Faridabad, 3.60 lakhs from Nagpur, 1 lakh from Amravati, 3.85 lakhs from Indore and 15.60 lakhs(gross) from Hyderabad. During the week, SARKAR RAJ saw a 60-65 percent fall as the film collected around 2.55 crores. It has so far netted 33.25 crores from India in three weeks. The Amitabh, Abhishek and Aishwarya starrer is a loser at the box-office for most of its distributors, but an average in the Bombay circuit. The Ramgopal Varma directed film has not been appreciated in the Overseas. EROS International, who bought the Overseas rights from Balaji for 7-8 crores have not been able to recover their investment, despite a decent US run. As far as the numbers go, SARKAR RAJ has grossed $719,707 from UK and $988,501 from the US.
Meanwhile, UTV Spot Boy's Rajeev Khandelwal starrer continues with its rock steady run adding another 65 lakhs in its third week. The 2 crore film has so far netted around 2.70 crores from its theatrical run in India. The moderate success and more importantly across-the-board acclaim of AAMIR has pleased the debutant director Raj Kumar Gupta and also Rajeev 'Aamir' Khandelwal!
