He may have put his television days behind him, but for his fans he continues to be Sujal, the lover boy of Kahiin to Hoga.
Rajeev Khandelwal is going to make his big screen debut with Aamir. In a chat with JT, the actor talks about his film, his fans and his so-called stand-off with Ekta Kapoor.
Terming his big screen appearance as a sheer run of luck, this Jaipur man says, "When I read the script, I did not know that Anurag Kashyap was associated with this film. I was amazed when I learnt about it. Anurag had such faith in me that he did not even ask me to give an audition." About the film, he adds, "The film is a psychological thriller and gives me an opportunity to experiment with the whole gamut of emotions." But considering his hugely popular romantic image, shouldn't he have debuted with a romantic film? "I was not happy with the scripts that were offered to me," he explains.
The manner in which he quit television serials earned Rajeev a lot of flak. But he says, "I think I was extremely fortunate to have survived such drastic career moves. I have a very strong belief in myself and am willing to start from scratch."
But this working style is often termed by his detractors as an attitude problem. Tell him this and he is quick to retort, "I think everybody should have an attitude. In my case it is a perception problem. I only try to better my prospects." But his stand-off with Ekta Kapoor was the result of this attitude. "That provided fodder to the gossip mills. Recently, I invited Ekta for the premiere of my film. She wished me all the best and said that she will not be able to make it. We remain cordial to each other," he quips.
So, is it this inherent charm, which also works on his female fans? "I have so many female fans because my characters are close to their dream man," he says with a smile. And what is his status, single or committed? "I'm single and happy," he says. And where does it place former co-actor Aamna Sharif? "Aamna is a good friend. I have organised a special screening of my film for her," he said. And his plans for the future? "I am not returning to television, unless something exceptional is offered to me," informed he.
