IIFA 2008 Diary: Day 1
Arrival of the stars
Among the Bollywood biggies Karan Johar, Riteish Deshmukh, David Dhawan, Katrina Kaif, Viveik Oberoi were among the first ones to put their foot in the city of Bangkok to be a part of the most prestigious IIFA Awards 2008.. The Bachchan family along with Kareena Kapoor arrived later.
Sarkar Raj Premiere gets overwhelming response
RGV's Sarkar Raj Premiere kick started IIFA this year in Bangkok. The film got an overwhelming response from the audiences. The premiere had a 'Green Carpet' welcome to show concern towards the issue of Global Warming. A huge crowd packed the venue and the security had a tough time managing them when the Bachchan's arrived for the Premiere at the Paragon Cineplex. Kareena Kapoor, Viveik Oberoi, Urmila Matondkar and Dia Mirza though present at Bangkok for IIFA, skipped the Premiere.
Music launch of Mission Istaanbul
IIFA awards 2008 became the platform for the music launch of Apoorva Lakhia's Mission Istaanbul. While the queen of soaps, Ekta Kapoor, who is the producer of the film, was missing from the event, her absence was filled in by her father, Jeetendra, who launched the music of Mission Istaanbul. The director along with the film's star cast Viveik Oberoi, Zayed Khan, Shabbir Ahluwalia and Nikitin Dheer interacted with the media. Viveik Oberoi also danced to the tunes of his famous numbers like 'Aye Ganpat' from Shootout At Lokhandwala.
IIFA weekend opens amidst uncalled for controversies
The IIFA Awards '08 weekend kick starts in exotic Bangkok from June 6. And even before the actual function starts, organizers Wizcraft Entertainment found themselves in a soup with some stars throwing tantrums while others landing themselves in uncalled for trouble.
Among the first stars to troop in Bangkok were close friends Urmila Matondkar and star designer Manish Malhotra. However, she didn't have the most pleasant welcome in Bangkok as she was asked by the hotel staff to wait for a while for her room keys. Needless to say, Madame Matondkar threw a fit and cooled down only after the organizers stepped in.
This was just one of the instances. Another embarrassing moment was at the Bangkok airport itself, when Rajeev (Chimpoo) Kapoor was held by the cops as he was in an inebriated state. Apparently, the actor-director was so drunk that he couldn't even tell his name properly at the immigration counter. Not a perfect start for the IIFA weekend one would say.
However, on the brighter side the IIFA weekend promises quite a lot of exciting events like the Gala Premiere of Sarkar Raj and some dazzling performances on the awards night. One of the hottest stars in Bollywood, Kareena Kapoor, is set to perform a special act in which she would appear as 'The Goddess of Bollywood'. Bebo would be performing to her latest chartbusters from Tashan, Jab We Met etc. and would have a different theme for each song. The act has been choreographed by ace choreographer Shiamak Davar while Manish Malhotra would be designing Bebo's outfits.
Harman Baweja's first live performance at IIFA
Harman Baweja slogged day and night to get his steps right for his first ever live performance. "So far I've danced only in front of the camera and my bathroom mirror. So I'm petrified. I'm performing my love ballad 'Milo Na Milo' from Love Story 2050." Now of course people will say she got me the IIFA performance, just as they're saying she got me What's Your Raashee?," Harman ends sarcastically. Shiamak Davar choreographed the number for Harman at the IIFA that Remo has originally in the film. Harman concludes appreciatively, "And look at Shamiak's graciousness. He has decided to retain almost 60 percent of Remo's steps so that Remo doesn't feel the least offended. Normally at events when other choreographers redo a number, they transform it completely into their own idiom."
IIFA honored Rahman, Shyam Benegal, Mumtaz
The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) announced the special award winners of the Idea IIFA Awards 2008. The award for 'Outstanding Contribution by an Indian in International Cinema' to A.R. Rahman; Shyam Benegal was recognized for his 'Outstanding Contribution to Indian Cinema' and Mumtaz was honored for her Achievement in Indian Cinema.
