🏏Sri Lanka vs India, 1st Test, India tour of Sri Lanka 2026🏏

India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test 2026: Playing XI & Team News

There's a sense of regality and nonchalance to the Galle International Cricket Stadium. The sights and sounds here are rather unique. A 17th century fort overlooks the ground - with its old-school, postcard-worthy ramparts - offering a great vantage point to watch the cricket. That is accompanied by the ambient music of the Indian Ocean that surrounds the fort.

The charm of the Galle stadium also comes from not being cut-off from the rest of the world. Cricket venues around the globe are often built as echo chambers for the sport. Not Galle, with its low stands. The bustling traffic on Colombo Road that lines the venue is as much in your view as a moving day's cricket inside it. It's a ground that blends into the scenery around it, rather than demanding attention all for itself.

But don't let the visuals dim its relevance to the sport. It is a lot more than just a pretty ground. Saturday onwards, Galle will host its 50th Test match - the most by an Asian venue. India will take this milestone game to hit a reset in whites - seek a fresh wave to crash the Test shores after recent wobbles. Shubman Gill sat in the press conference on the eve of the game and broke down India's WTC campaign to simple mathematics - 9 Tests to play, 6 or 7 to win.

match-forecast-sri-lanka-vs-india-1st-test

Sri Lanka would've read the memo that South Africa offered to the world last November - that this Indian team is thoroughly beatable in the subcontinent. Sri Lanka's resolve, despite coming off a series defeat in West Indies, will be strengthened further by the big absence of Jasprit Bumrah.

India remain in a transitional tangle, but this tour offers their batters a chance to reverse some of the recent narratives about their game against spin. The Galle surface will have runs for them, but also some extra bounce for the spinners that will pique the interests of close-in catchers and test batting nerves. It will demand time and patience, and none of their recent nonchalance.

When: Sri Lanka vs India, 1st Test, August 15-19, 2026

Where: Galle International Cricket Stadium

What to expect: Some scattered rain throughout the match days, and a lot of heat and humidity. This ocean-adjacent venue also gets cross winds that can help spinners generate a lot of drift. Spinners will like bowling here but it is still going to be a batter's den, at least for the first couple of days.

Team News:

Sri Lanka Lahiru Udara should slot in at the top of the line-up, like he did in the second Test against West Indies, due to Pathum Nissanka's injury. A first Test appearance since March 2023 is on Niroshan Dickwella, who returned to the squad owing to Kusal Mendis's injury. Off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha should get a look-in too, after he dismissed KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant in the warm-up game.

Probable XI: Nishan Madushka, Lahiru Udara, Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva (c), Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Sonal Dinusha, Keshara Nuwantha, Prabath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando

Sri Lanka have always struggled against India in Test cricket! Team India enters the series with history firmly on its side. #INDvsSL #TeamIndia #cricketupdates #cricket

Did You Know:

- Galle has the third-lowest percentage of drawn Tests at a venue (min. 30 Tests) - 14.28. Of the 27 Tests hosted by Galle since 2014, only one ended in a draw - the rain-affected one featuring Bangladesh last year.

- Ravindra Jadeja is two short of 350 Test wickets

- India have won eight and drawn two in their last 10 Tests against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's last win against India came in Galle in 2015.

TeamIndia are set to take on Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series, beginning August 15 👏 📷- BCCI #teamindia #bharatarmy #coti🇮🇳 #indvssl #worldcup

What they said:

"In grounds which are open, wind sometimes plays a crucial part. As a batsman, even in team meetings we talk about it - if you want to take on a spinner, we have to see if the wind is with us or against us. Most of the grounds in India are closed with the stands. In open grounds, the wind plays a huge role." - India captain Shubman Gill on playing in Galle

"Galle is a tough place to keep wickets and we ave to get our best wicketkeeper on board. Having spoken to the selectors and head coach, we feel hat Dickwella was the right choice." - Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva on give Niroshan Dickwella a Test comeback.

IND vs SL 1st Test Playing 11 Today Match, Team Prediction, Full Squad, Players List: (BCCI/Creimas Photo)

India play their first Test in Sri Lanka in nearly a decade starting on Saturday, when the country celebrates its Independence Day. The visitors completely flattened Sri Lanka on their last visit in the country for a Test series in 2017 but since then, Indian batters’ credentials of facing spin has come under sharp scrutiny due to their abject failures against New Zealand and South Africa at home.

It is also the start of what could be an uphill struggle for India to avoid failing to qualify for the a second successive World Test Championship final. The visitors were dealt a blow well before they visited Sri Lanka even started with premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah ruled out. Spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar is also out for this Test and possibly the next one. It means that India could probably go with a spin department consisting of Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja. Mohammed Siraj will be India’s pace spearhead, but it remains to be seen whether Gurnoor Brar or Prasidh Krishna gets the nod to be his partner.

Big picture: India's 600th, Galle's 50th

The last time India toured Sri Lanka for Tests they were bang in the middle of a golden era and ended up making the hosts look ordinary. A lot has changed since then, including the frequency and the length of Test series between two teams that always made for close contests in Sri Lanka.

To that great Indian team that toured in 2017, Sri Lanka was more home than India. The pitches offered more bounce and consistent turn, allowing the Indian spinners to dominate and outbowl the hosts despite the presence of Rangana Herath.

It is only because India have lost two of their last three home series that they don't start as overwhelming favourites in a country that they have won each of their last five Tests.
