The last of its kind. There shall never be another Gadar!!! I was only 10 at the time but couldn't get tickets till the 6th week in Delhi. It was absolutely Mayhem.

BOI has really underestimated its footfalls. Anil Sharma claims it was close to 9-10 Cr easily. At the same time, they call it the 2nd biggest Indian film after Sholay.

BOI

The collections of the film were the never seen before type especially for those initial 10-12 weeks and the craze was unprecedented with the music and dialogues and certain scenes going to such a level that they became etched in public memory like nothing before. Never had exhibitors seen such a response to scenes with the public going wild and this was practically all over the country

Gadar Ek Prem Katha was probably the second greatest film ever seen in India after Sholay.

It could very well be that no other commercial Indian movie till date could narrate the horrors of partition and personal dramas in such an emotionally relatable way. I can fully understand the iconic position Gadar already gained at the time of getting screened. Nevertheless, going to the movies 25 years ago should never become a yardstick for the movie-going 25 years later... that would be utterly unfair (imo). Also the 'theatre-landscape' changed drastically.

The famous clash had been between two completely different movies... on more than one level. To me, no common thing except the release date. Pitching those movies against each other in any terms, is equally unfair imo.

Btw... to me, the most intense scene:

(sorry... you have to see it on YouTube...but maybe you all already know which scene I mean smiley2)

I completely agree with this take. Gadar earned its iconic status for a reason ,few mainstream Indian films have portrayed the trauma of Partition and the personal cost of that upheaval with such emotional intensity and mass appeal. Its impact on audiences at the time was undeniable.

At the same time, judging a film solely through the lens of nostalgia or by how audiences reacted 25 years ago can be limiting. The way people watch, experience, and discuss films has changed enormously, as has the entire theatrical landscape. It's only fair to evaluate films in the context of both their era and the present.

I also agree that the Gadar–Lagaan clash is often oversimplified. They were fundamentally different films in terms of storytelling, themes, scale, and intended audience. Beyond sharing a release date, there wasn't much that made them direct competitors creatively. Both succeeded on their own terms and contributed differently to Indian cinema, which is why comparing them as if one had to diminish the other never really makes sense.
