SHOT 5
City Hospital Balcony, Delhi NCR
Night.
The city is quiet.
Aryaman sits alone on a bench.
The diary rests beside him.
In his hands is the sealed envelope.
For hours he has stared at it.
Unable to open it.
Afraid of what remains.
Finally—
He tears it open.
Inside are several handwritten pages.
The handwriting is unmistakably Saanjh's.
Aryaman,
If you are reading this, then the truth has already come out.
Arjun knows.
Maya knows.
And now you deserve to know too.
Aryaman continues reading.
I spent years asking myself one question.
Why did I do it?
Why did I throw away a friendship?
Why did I steal another person's future?
Why did I hurt the people I loved most?
Tears begin forming.
The answer is ugly.
Because for one selfish moment,
I wanted something that belonged to someone else.
Aryaman closes his eyes.
The words hurt.
Because for the first time, his mother is no longer an idealized memory.
She is a flawed human being.
The letter continues.
Your father never treated me badly.
Never raised his voice.
Never disrespected me.
Never stopped being kind.
Flashbacks appear.
Arjun helping with Aryaman's homework.
Family vacations.
Birthdays.
Arjun taking care of Saanjh's parents like his own.
Hospital visits and Arjun taking care of Saanjh during her pregnancy.
Ordinary moments.
He fulfilled every responsibility.
But responsibilities and love are not always the same thing.
Aryaman's hands shake.
I spent years trying to become the woman he thought I was.
The woman from those phone calls.
The woman he loved.
But I wasn't her.
When you were seven,
I realized something.
Every day I looked at you,
I remembered Maya.
Flashbacks.
Saanjh watching Aryaman play.
Smiling.
Then crying alone afterward.
Every birthday.
Every family photograph.
Every celebration.
Every happy moment.
I remembered what I had stolen.
The guilt never decreased.
It grew.
Year after year.
One day I understood that I had become a ghost in my own life.
I could no longer live with myself.
Aryaman reaches the hardest line.
I did not leave because I stopped loving you.
I left because I hated myself.
For fifteen years.
That answer had been missing.
Now it is finally here.
***
Inside the hospital
For the first time since the truth emerged.
They speak honestly.
No misunderstandings.
No secrets.
No disguises.
No "Madhuri."
Just Arjun and Maya.
A long silence.
Maya: "Fifteen years."
Arjun: "Yes."
Maya: "You never knew."
Arjun: "No."
Maya: "Not even once?"
Arjun thinks.
Arjun: "Sometimes."
Maya looks up.
Arjun: "I used to wonder why the person I loved on the phone and the person standing in front of me felt strangely similar."
A sad smile appears.
Arjun: "I always thought I was imagining things."
Maya laughs through tears.
Maya: "Idiot."
Arjun: "Probably."
For the first time in years.
The heaviness between them begins to crack.
***
Ashwin too knew the truth and regretted the past.
Ashwin: "I thought I was protecting you."
Maya remains silent.
Ashwin: "I ended up hurting you."
His voice breaks.
Ashwin: "I'm sorry."
For Maya, this apology is fifteen years overdue.
She finally holds her father's hand.
***
Arjun went outside to buy food for them. Aryaman comes near Maya as she was waiting outside Ashwin's room. Maya noticed him.
Alone.
No Arjun.
No family.
No pressure.
Maya is nervous.
Strangely nervous.
More nervous than she has been in years.
Aryaman walks in.
Holding Saanjh's letter.
A long silence.
Then:
Aryaman: "Can I ask you something?"
Maya: "Anything."
Aryaman: "Did you ever hate me?"
The question destroys her.
Instantly.
Maya: "No."
Her eyes fill.
Maya: "Never."
Aryaman: "Not even after everything?"
Maya: "No."
Aryaman: "Why?"
Maya struggles to answer.
Finally:
Maya: "Because none of it was your fault."
Aryaman nods.
Then quietly says:
Aryaman: "I think my mom loved me."
Maya: "She did."
Aryaman: "I think she loved Dad too."
Maya: "She did."
Aryaman: "And I think she loved you."
Maya finally breaks.
Because that is the tragedy.
Saanjh genuinely loved both of them.
Which made her betrayal all the more painful.
***
Two days later
Aryaman discovers the café address from Saanjh's diary.
Without telling Maya why, he tricks Arjun into coming there.
A few minutes later Maya arrives.
Both immediately realize what Aryaman has done.
The awkward teenager quickly escapes.
Aryaman: "I suddenly remembered I have somewhere else to be."
Arjun: "You planned this."
Aryaman: "Absolutely."
And he runs.
Silence.
Fifteen years of silence.
Arjun looks around.
The café has changed. Tum Hi Aana plays in the radio from the movie Marjavaan.
Yet something remains familiar.
Arjun: "This was the place."
Maya nods.
Maya: "Six o'clock."
Arjun: "You remember."
Maya laughs softly.
Maya: "I spent fifteen years trying to forget."
Neither sits for several moments.
Maya: "I was scared if you misunderstand that I was playing or pranking with you, when I reveal it to you."
Arjun laughed.
Both staring at the empty chair that should have witnessed their first meeting years ago.
Arjun: "I waited."
Maya looks at him.
Arjun: "Not long. Maybe twenty minutes."
A sad smile appears.
Arjun: "But I remember thinking whoever she was... she must be worth waiting for."
Maya's eyes immediately become emotional.
They want to hold each other's hands but they didn't.
***
They come outside and it starts raining.
Rimjhim Gire Sawaan from the movie Music teacher plays

Heavy rain.
Just like years ago in college.
People run for cover.
Maya and Arjun end up beneath a small bus stop shelter.
The same uncomfortable closeness they once shared under an umbrella returns.
Only now neither wants to move away.
Maya: "You still hate getting wet?"
Arjun: "I never hated it."
Maya: "You stood in the rain because of duty."
Arjun: "I stand in the rain because somebody once forced me under an umbrella."
Maya laughs.
Maya: "I was very annoying."
Arjun: "You still are."
For the first time in years, the conversation feels natural.
Not painful.
Not forced.
Natural.
The rain continues.
Neither notices.
***
Weeks later.
Ashwin recovers.
Partially.
Arjun's business issues are resolved.
The diary is closed.
The secrets are gone.
For the first time.
Nobody is hiding.
Aryaman spends more time with Maya.
Naturally.
Not because anyone forces it.
Not because of guilt.
Because he enjoys her company.
They argue.
Laugh.
Share stories.
Build something genuine.
Something that should have existed years ago.
***
Arjun is preparing to return to the Netherlands.
Aryaman stands beside him.
Aryaman: "Are we leaving?"
Arjun: "That's the plan."
Aryaman glances toward Maya.
Standing nearby.
Then back at Arjun.
Aryaman: "Do you still love her?"
The directness catches Arjun off guard.
Arjun: "When did you become this annoying?"
Aryaman: "You taught me persistence."
A long pause. Aryaman goes silent.
***
That night.
Maya's phone rings.
Unknown number.
She answers.
Maya: "Hello?"
Silence.
Then a familiar voice.
Arjun: "Wow."
Maya immediately smiles.
Maya: "What?"
Arjun: "You sound different."
Maya: "It's been fifteen years."
Arjun: "No."
A pause.
Arjun: "You sound exactly the same."
Maya closes her eyes.
Because for a moment she is twenty-one again.
Not burdened by loss.
Just Maya.
The girl who called a bodyguard from an unknown number.
They spend hours talking.
Like before.
No disguises.
No fake names.
No lies.
Just conversation.
A new beginning. Just like everything had started earlier.
***
Several months later.
Maya hosts a fundraising event in a hotel.
Business leaders.
Celebrities.
Investors.
Media.
Arjun and Aryaman visits.
Men in black.
The whole attention is on them.
No bodyguards.
No enemies.
No secrets.
Maya watches the children.
Maya: "Business meeting?"
Arjun: "No."
Maya: "Then why are you here?"
Arjun smiles.
A rare smile.
The same smile Maya once heard through a telephone fifteen years ago.
Arjun: "To finally meet Madhuri."
Maya stares at him.
Then laughs.
For the first time.
Without pain attached to it.
Nearby.
Aryaman watches.
Pretending not to watch.
Aryaman: "Finally."
Maya looks at Aryaman and goes to him. He is giving a sweet boyish smile, with messy hair, unadjusted tie and collar.
She straightens his collar and adjusts his tie. Aryaman smiled.
Aryaman: "Aunty, I always struggle with this. That's why I hate wearing formal clothes."
Maya: "Not anymore, Aryaman."

Maya starts adjusting his hair too.
Aryaman: "That's my hairstyle."
Maya didn't mind and complete adjusting his hair.
Maya: "Look at the mirror. You look like a Bollywood hero now."
Aryaman doubtfully looked at the mirror.
Aryaman: "It's not bad."
Maya smiled.
Music plays softly.
Couples dance.
Teri Meri Prem Kahaani plays

Arjun and Maya are watching them.
Aryaman appears beside Arjun.
Aryaman: "Go ask her."
Arjun: "No."
Aryaman: "You're afraid."
Arjun: "I've negotiated billion-dollar deals."
Aryaman: "Exactly."
Arjun glares.
Aryaman grins.
Eventually Arjun approaches Maya.
Arjun: "Would you like to dance?"
Maya stares.
Maya: "That's your opening line?"
Arjun: "I've been out of practice for fifteen years."
Maya smiles.
And accepts.
As they dance slowly, neither speaks.
Words aren't necessary.
Their story has already said enough.
Arjun and Aryaman drives Maya to the park that was funded by Maya. Aryaman decided to give them space and entered the park. He happened to notice.
One little boy falls.
Starts crying.
Immediately he runs toward a woman.
His mother.
She lifts him instantly.
Comforts him.
The child stops crying.
Simple.
Normal.
Ordinary.
Aryaman keeps watching.
Another child.
Same thing.
Another.
Same thing.
Another.
Same thing.
Mothers.
Everywhere.
Suddenly Aryaman walks away.
***
Children play nearby.
The sun is setting.
Maya watches the playground.
Maya: "You know what hurts the most?"
Arjun: "What?"
Maya: "We lost fifteen years."
Arjun becomes quiet.
Arjun: "Then let's not lose another fifteen."
Maya looks at him.
Speechless.
Arjun takes a breath.
The same man who could face armed attackers without fear.
Yet this moment terrifies him.
Arjun: "I loved Madhuri."
A pause.
Arjun: "I loved the girl who called me every night."
Another pause.
Arjun: "And after reading that diary, I realized something."
Maya's eyes never leave his.
Arjun: "I never stopped loving her."
Tears appear instantly.
Arjun: "And now that I finally know who she is..."
He gently takes her hand.
Arjun: "I don't want to lose her again."
Maya and Arjun hugged each other. Maya caught Aryaman watching them in tears and she signed him to join the hug. Aryaman refused. They break the hug.
Maya comes to Aryaman.
Maya: "What happened?"
Aryaman: "Nothing."
Maya: "Aryaman?"
Aryaman opens up
Aryaman: "When I was little, I told everyone that I don't need a mother. But as time passed, I observed that everyone have a mother. I don't. My friends tell me that I am unlucky as I have no mother."
His eyes turned red.
Maya: "Do you know why you were named Aryaman? Aryaman was the name I had picked for my future son when I was loving your father. The name came from Arjun and Maya. Aryaman. I told Saanjh about it. She laughed and said only I could spend hours planning names for children I didn't even have. She remembered it and named you. That's how much attention she paid to the people she loved."
Aryaman looks down.
Maya: "So when I look at you, I don't just see her son. But I am seeing my son, whom I would exactly want to be like you. Just tell your friends that you have a mother who can come to your PTAs, football matches, to defend your teacher roasts you and give a proper response to your friends who call you motherless child."
Aryaman: "Means, shall I call you 'maa'?"
Maya: "You never need a permission."
Maya and Aryaman breaks down and hugged each other and cried. Arjun wiped his tears and hugged both of them.
