What did Gaikwad say ahead of game
āNothing but support. Heās a quality player, and a young captain thatās working himself into the role, and heās doing a good job. I know heās getting a lot of heat from outside, but within heās got a lot of support, and heās very well respected within the side, and that will continue.ā
When Ravichandran Ashwin retired and Ravindra Jadeja was sent to the Rajasthan Royals, it seemed like Chennai Super Kings were moving away from their tried and tested template. But CSK have now found two players in the form of Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad.
In the match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Chepauk a week ago, Chennai saw encouraging signs when the duo spun them to victory in what was the first defence of a target under 200 this IPL season.
CSK's playoffs chances
Sitting in fifth spot in the table, five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings are still in with a shot of making the play-offs. If they win five of the next seven matches, they have a chance to finish in the top four, boosted by a positive net run-rate.
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) produced arguably their most complete performance of IPL 2026, trouncing the Mumbai Indians (MI) by 103 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. Barring a 73-run stand for the third wicket between Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma, it was a batting meltdown for the hosts, who capitulated from 84/3 to 104 all out, handing the visitors a thumping win.
One of the stars for CSK was Akeal Hosein, whose spell of 4/17 in four overs broke the back of the hostsā batting line-up. Speaking about MIās capitulation in the second innings, he said that while teams can perhaps look evenly-matched on paper, it is who executes the plan on that day that decides the match result.
āI mean, at the end of the day, cricket is played on the day, not on paper. And when you go out as a bowling unit, and you execute as well as you did today, thereās nothing to be surprised about when you see the opposition make such a score. Itās just about, you know, singing praises to the bowling unit. And like I say, once you go out and you hit your straps and you execute, anything is possible,ā Hosein said in the post-match press conference.
Iām interested in the second match
It's raining heat in Chennai. Drops of sunshine have flooded the city and baked the ground. People aren't in yet, if many of them are taking ice baths it'll be no surprise. The two teams will need some coolers too, especially the one that'll bowl first. CSK are coming in on the back of two wins in the last three games. Samson is among the runs now, their spinners are on a roll too. For GT, their successful template might need a relook. Might not happen mid-season, adjustments though might be forced. Will that happen first or will they pull things back.
Chennai Super Kings enter this contest on the back of a morale-boosting win against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians. While Sanju Samson set it up with his second century of this season, they were ruthless in the second half of the game. The bowlers executed their plans brilliantly, there were no fielding errors and the energy was visible on the field. Despite injury setbacks, CSK have managed to form a potent bowling attack. Barring their first game against RR where they got bowled out for 127, the batting unit has scored over 180 in all the games this season. Captain Ruturaj hasn't crossed 30 yet this season but he has a good record against GT, averaging 50. With two successive games at home, the five-time champions will be eager to gain momentum in the second half of the tournament.
Gujarat Titans lost their first two matches, won three consecutively, and then suffered back-to-back losses. They wouldn't mind another three-match winning streak. After a disappointing batting performance against Mumbai where they were bundled out for 100, the Titans posted 205 against RCB, thanks to a classy hundred from Sai Sudharsan, however that total proved inadequate against the defending champions in Bengaluru. The top-heavy GT side must find a way to maximise their scoring in the death overs with the bat. The bowlers failed to apply any pressure on the opposition in the last game but they are unlikely to make any drastic changes. Will Sai Kishore find a way to get into the XI? After all, he's no stranger to this ground.
