I saw the movie. The film is an average watch that works in parts. It tries to balance both horror and comedy and succeeds only partially. The biggest issue is its prolonged running time, which takes too long to establish the main story; as a result, your interest level drops after a point.
The film has an interesting start, where a newlywed bride is abducted by an evil force. The flashback that follows is engaging too. However, the entire episode where Akshay is in conversation with an astrologer is deeply irritating. Also, him staying in the haveli despite being warned that it is haunted makes no sense. His father disappearing as if he never existed, just to carry the story forward, feels rather convenient.
The comic portions are the biggest highlight of the film. They work to a large extent, but even they get repetitive after a point. Akshay accusing Rajpal Yadav of lusting over women is funny initially but becomes irritating because the same thing is repeated again and again. Several comic scenes also feel recycled from Priyadarshan’s past films. However, these scenes are elevated significantly thanks to the terrific camaraderie between the four actors (Akshay, Paresh, Rajpal, and Asrani).
The horror portions are quite scary at times. Several scenes do manage to create fear, although it wears down considerably once the mystery is revealed, as it turns out to be too clichéd. The climax also feels unconvincing, and the double-role twist comes across as odd.
The music is another weak point. Not one song stays with you after the film ends. The flashback song, in particular, is totally insipid, although its picturization reminds one of “Mere Dholna.”
Akshay does well with terrific comic timing, but he should start playing roles appropriate to his age. Pretending to be someone still unmarried due to bad luck feels off-putting. Wamiqa has no substantial role and keeps appearing and disappearing.
Asrani handles his role like a veteran, and he will be missed. Paresh is good, although his character is quite irritating at times, especially when he cons money. Rajpal is a scene-stealer with his comic timing. Tabu has been wasted in an inconsequential role.
Overall, Bhooth Bangla is watchable but nothing extraordinary.
