Hiten was introduce by ekta as karan specifically because sahil and gautam were not well received from the audience that ekta had expected. Neither the ganga-sahil nor the damini-gautam love angles received much of a response from the audience. While people did like gautam-teesha pairing , it still didn't generate the level of hype as ekta wanted.
That was why ekta exactly wanted to cash in on hiten-gauri's massive popularity from kutumb . She waited for gauri's contract with sony to end , bringing in the character of Riva as a temperary measure in the meantime. As soon as gauri's contract was up , ekta immediately brought her in as nandini opposite karan.
Ekta's decision worked wonders Hiten received immense love from the audience as karan , and the chemistry between karan-nandini received just as much love as pratham-gauri did in kutumb.
Showing karan slept with tanya was heartbroken for hiten-gauri fans just as it was to see nandini marry ansh and then be raped by him. It took karan three years to consummate his marriage with tanya and even only did it after tulsi returned from jail and gave him a lectute tulsi told karan tanya is his responsibility not a nanny he should give her the rights of a wife and accept that nandini would never come back into his life, also the doctors had declared her almost dead. People were like unite karan-nandini , Ekta intentionally delayed their union by extending ansh's character from 4 to 11 months and keeping tanya as a third wheel for three years.
