Yep. They want to get work and also monetise their showreel to make as much profit as possible. They’re doing it by ensuring that they use a story that has no copyright that they need to pay someone for. I mean whether you use Valmiki Ramayana or Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas, it’s not like anyone can pay them or they’ll come asking for their share of the profits.
The movie itself will sell tickets, OTT, TV broadcast rights, music rights, merchandise probably. They know that recovering 4000 crores is not possible by any stretch of the imagination not even with both movies combined and the reception of the first will be surely an excellent parameter to judge the outcome of the second before it releases next year in Diwali.
The subject matter has ensured as it is that a certain section of the audience will not be interested in watching these films already given their ideological differences and their religious beliefs. Those who have no such problems are bothered by their own set of issues from the announcement of the cast itself - I mean… they’ve managed to piss people off from Ramayana by casting Ram and Sita - if that’s not irony, I don’t know what is at this point. Never imagined this could happen but here we are. Then there are the others who are associated with this project be it Sriram Raghavan (ironic again given his first and last names) or Nitesh Tiwari, who’s claim to fame is being the director of Dangal, the current biggest money laundering scam of the Indian movie industry.
The teaser/trailer hasn’t impressed a lot of people given the hype. The producer doesn’t help whenever he starts talking either.
I hope the ED is vigilant and does the needful if this happens to be a money laundering operation disguised as a movie. Would probably be the biggest kick Bollywood gets post pandemic and the audiences abandoning them. The timing of the movies is also a bit suspicious. The second one in particular… it releases in Diwali 2027. If things stick to schedule, we know that Lok Sabha 2029 will be around April/May as usual. They can claim to run the movie from October 2027 to whatever 2028…. Enough time to sneak in a lot of money especially since NGOs aren’t as easy an option anymore owing to the stringent rules and regulations tightening FCRA.
