Now IIRC Quran doesn't even prohibit women from going for Hajj without Mehram, this rule comes from Bukhari Hadeeth, interestingly the Shias don't consider Bukhari as Sahih Hadeeth(authentic Hadeeth) so they don't consider Mehram an obligatory requirement (obviously even they had to follow that till recently since Saudi law was such)

P.s. oh i forgot, it wasn't just in that era. Marriage to a 9 year old or even younger can happen even now in iran, with her father's consent.
