Rent in Mumbai is extremely high. You’re also supposed to pay deposit with rent when you start renting, which essentially is extra money. Say your rent is 25K per month, and this is for matchbox sized flats in Mumbai, in ordinary neighbourhoods not even posh areas, the deposit will be 1 lakh. You pay that deposit and per contract at least 2 months of rent in advance. The deposit is returned when you vacate the premises, IF you have done your paperwork properly. If you have damaged the property then the landlord deducts the money from your deposit, if you did nothing they refund the whole amount.
The broker is also supposed to be paid at least 15K or so, depending on his charges which is determined by his experience.
So even prior to moving into a new place which is rented Angad needs at least 1.5 - 2 lakhs in hand to start looking for these properties. And he still has to meet his regular expenses.
His share of rent of the room chawl if not the entire rent of the chawl, daily expenses like groceries, clothes, shoes etc. He had twins so double the expenses of every single thing that a newborn needs (and they need a LOT of things), Vrinda’s medical expenses at that time, school fees once the kids were old enough. Then a family this huge would have medical expenses from time to time too right from regular cough, cold and fevers to other illnesses. There is a senior citizen in that family and 2 children so those are a given. And I still haven’t accounted for their light bill and mobile bill, travel expenses even if they use passes for rail and bus transport.
All of it based on whatever salary he has or whatever he makes from his business.
It might seem unrealistic but in a way this is the most real thing in the show. Life in Mumbai is as it is expensive, account for all those things and you won’t think it is insane that he didn’t manage to get a decent place so far despite 6 years. Some people never get to buy their own home here despite living here all their lives. Some do but it’s a small one room house that is as tiny as you can imagine.
