08:30 Local Time, 03:00 GMT, 08:30 IST: The opening two days of Guwahati’s maiden Test have firmly swung South Africa’s way, with the visitors piling up a commanding 489. Senuran Muthusamy and Marco Jansen were the standout performers on Day 2, building on the solid platform laid by the South African batters on the first day. With just three days left, the match appears to be heading toward one of two realistic outcomes - a South African victory or a draw. Given the pitch remains excellent for batting, the latter currently looks more probable.

India’s openers handled the final half hour yesterday with composure under fading light, but today demands far more intent. They will need to score positively and ensure South Africa aren’t allowed a sniff, because this bowling attack has more than enough firepower to run through sides if pressure takes over. Should the surface begin to show signs of wear and tear, the task will only become steeper for the hosts. India must dig deep, show character, and avoid the kind of batting collapse that cost them dearly in Kolkata. A spirited fightback is the need of the hour.

Pitch report | Deep Dasgupta and Shaun Pollock: It's a nippy overcast morning. Still looks like a good pitch to bat on. Pitch has slowed up and will continue to do so. Some wear and tear on the surface but not too serious. In general, still nothing wrong with it. Don't see too many devils in it.

Maharaj to Jaiswal, FOUR, swept away! Tossed up delivery around middle and Jaiswal goes down on his knee and puts it away to the deep backward square leg fence with a well-executed sweep
