Edged and taken! Kuldeep with some extra bounce does the trick as he draws Stubbs forward with a full ball angled across him. The ball shot up more than Stubbs expected and it flies to Rahul at first slip from high off the bat. Rahul does well to take it, having to move slightly to his right. Came quickly at him, but he makes amends for his drop earlier in the day. Stubbs falls one short of a half-century

For the first time in the history of Test cricket, each of the top-four in a team innings scored 35 or more but none of them reached/crossed 50.

Tristan Stubbs: I think a bit disappointing in the end there. I think all of us in the top six got in and no one’s really made that big one. I actually think I prefer batting at 3 than anywhere else. It (pitch) played quite nicely, but I think they bowled quite well. It was quite hard to score. But it wasn’t free-flowing. You felt comfortable, but the scoreboard wasn’t going anywhere. So I thought they bowled quite well. Every time he (Kuldeep) has come on, he’s sort of gone a bit slow with the first ball, and I managed to work his first ball of the spell. And if anything, it just beat me with the drift. I can’t believe Kuldeep got me out. Yeah (about playing Kuldeep in the nets for Delhi Capitals) and KL caught it. That makes your life that much more difficult. I think first-innings runs are going to be big. Hopefully Scholesy (Verreynne) and Sen (Muthusamy) can extend for as long as possible tomorrow and we can bat for as long as possible. And then bowl as best we can. I think that’ll be the game plan. Just extend the first innings for as long as we can. Hopefully the guys who come in now don’t give it away and get 40s, and someone can get 100.

Whose day was Day 1? South Africa's? Each of their top four got starts. They had two 80-plus partnerships in the top four which set them a good platform. Markram and Rickelton stitched the best opening partnership in the series so far. Bavuma seemed to continue from where he left off in Kolkata. He and Stubbs largely were untroubled. But they fell to strokes they might look back on. De Zorzi couldn't hang around for much but South Africa have 247 runs on the board.

Pitch Report | Shaun Pollock and Deep Dasgupta: "Day 1 was a bit of a tug-of-war. It did a little bit initially, as we suggested, and then it settled down nicely to bat on. Definitely looking drier so far today, but it was definitely moist and a bit of movement upfront. In that first hour in particular, balls nipping around, beating the inside edge, beating the outside edge, causing a lot of problems for Rickelton and for Markram. So the bowlers had to try and target the stumps, try and be as full as they possibly could and try and ask the questions. They bowled nicely, there was enough in it. We're going to have to wait and see with that second new ball whether it does something similar. Maybe it's a new ball surface. The other interesting thing in the morning session was there was more bounce for the spinners in that initial period and that was to do with the moisture as well. It's got dry and it's started to get a few holes, and as the game goes on, it's going to get a bit more dusty. This second new ball, and it's a 9 AM local time start, so there would be something in it for the seamers. I'm looking at the spinners at this pitch, three spinners on each side. The footmarks, we see that. The pitch has kind of dried down a little bit, so we might see a little bit more for the spinners on Day 2. This pitch is still good to bat on. Day 2, best batting day. I think it'll get a little bit worse, a little bit more uneven, a little bit more turn as the game goes on."
