And while we’re talking about 2006 films that didn’t get their full due, can we pause for Umrao Jaan?
It may not have set the box office on fire, but JP Dutta’s remake was achingly beautiful in its own right. Aishwarya Rai as Umrao was all grace and melancholy — she wasn’t Rekha, she didn’t try to be, and that’s what made it poignant. The languid pacing, the poetry, Anu Malik’s music (soaked in nostalgia), and Chitra’s haunting vocals gave it a rare old-world texture.
I loved it. I don't think it was a hit, but it was beautiful.
