Why cant they even afford 5 kg of rice should be the main question.

Its because of caste discrimination. Due to this systemic bias, these people are denied work and basic dignity. So yes, they get sold for 5kg of rice but not because they are cheap but because society made their survival that difficult.

Imagine having to change your religion for 5kg of rice, how deep rooted must the discrimination be to drive someone to that point?? I have seen many people from lower castes convert to Buddhism. And why is that? Because they face caste based discrimination in their own religion but not in Buddhism.

Even the current generation mocks them for being sold for 5 kg of rice, without understanding the real reason behind it. That alone shows how deeply embedded the problem still is.

Oh yeah. They are referred to as ‘rice bags’. How nasty of them to mock someone for their basic need of wanting to put food on their tables. Brahmins are also mocked btw, and made to feel guilty or inferior or superior depending upon the mood of the person 😅. All in all, it’s a very complex situation which needs to be untangled like yesterday.

No they won’t ever understand it fully, unfortunately. There is a movie in Telugu called Leader (which is a cult classic btw), where the protagonist tells his elders, in a moment of despair of course, the system will only begin to change when all the oldies leave. They will all leave sooner or later, but it’s upon us the youth to not let them contaminate us with their putrid thought process. I think the real problem is in the villages where even the youth is completely brainwashed.

I know they will never fully understand it and even if they do, they will still cling to their old, regressive mentality. But our generation has to initiate such conversations with the older generation from time to time, because we can neither erase them completely nor wait for them to be gone to bring change in the country. Maybe these small conversations can help, little by little, to reduce discrimination.

Oh that goes without saying. Like they say, the real change should start from within first and in turn they must strive to make changes in their immediate families and so on and so forth. A big change in my family is they don’t blatantly discriminate anymore. Accepting inter caste, even inter religious and ethnic marriages is also happening. But still no active mixing with the actual lower caste people who are relegated to menial jobs like sanitation , janitors, house helps etc. I don’t even know if that ever is possible even.Basically poor people are the ones who face the brunt of discrimination the most.

Jumping in the discussion.. silent member..

Cast based discrimination does exist in the rural areas though don't see it much in the urban areas much. The govt shd have a system where if one generation has already got the reservation then the future generations should not be included in it..however there should be a cap.. there should be a balance between merti based system and reservation.. in TN, the reservation % is so high that general candidates don't even get into govt colleges.. and no reservations for Jobs.. jobs shd be purely based on merit.. if one can't get into it after giving so much then there is no use..

Also the govt should increase the no of IITs lIMs and other premium institutions.. that way they can maintain a balance..

Not just SC ST, our elders discriminated against the people of other religions too. The discrimination is deep rooted, illogical and dangerous even. My grandmother still doesn’t eat when she goes out, not even in the pure vegetarian places. Things are changing rapidly though. The current generation is more open minded and actively making changes. The thing is we humans will learn to discriminate and create categories, class systems etc regardless. There is a huge class barrier in place between the rich and poor which transcends every other class system, how are we going to break that? Eradicating corruption from the entire fabric of the society is the only way.

Well, I too avoid eating in places of a certain specific religion because of the spit thing. It's not just because I've seen it online, but also because I've seen it real life, that too not just in uneducated ones, but an educated middle class family.

The class system between rich and poor, is here to stay, I'm afraid. I don't see it going away anytime sooner or later cos that's just the way we humans are, unless we all become spiritual beings.

Although I do agree with the majority of your post, but missionaries do exploit the vulnerability of poor & helpless people. Their charity is not selfless but with a mission of conversion.

You mean they actually spit? Never heard of this before. 🤢

Anyway, I prefer to eat at only the vegetarian places being a strict vegetarian. When I am abroad, I eat at vegan places. When I am left with no other options, I still eat but with extreme caution. My dietary habits are something that I cannot change in the name of trying to mingle.

Of course, I don’t restrict or discriminate against anyone for their food habits.
