Don't worry Baba,I'll be perfectly fine on my own."said Burhan over the phone. He smiled at the tense muttering at the other end as he descended the court steps.
"I'm really okay.Go to Karachi,I know how important her death anniversary is to you."
There was more muttering.
"I'm not a child anymore.I handle this myself."
Suddenly, his phone went flying out of his hand and landed right in the middle of a puddle. He watched in horror as it fizzled out and finally died.
"What on earth-"he turned around angrily to confront the woman who had rudely bumped into him ,only to find himself gazing into a familiar pair of eyes.Eyes,he had seen in his father's albums, eyes his father had wept over and eyes which had been closed forever ,nearly a decade back.
He barely registered the young woman's apology as countless memories came rushing back.
"Sir!"
He was jolted out of his reverie."It's alright Miss-"
"Zainab",came the quick reply.
He frowned a little.
"Miss Zainab, accidents do happen but I hope this incident doesn't repeat itself.I can't afford to buy myself a new phone every week."
"Of course ,sir.I'll pay for the damages "she muttered, eyes downcast.
He nodded.
"Your number and address please."
She looked at him incredulously.
He sighed."I need some collateral."
"Do you realize how inappropriate this is?"
"Fine,your work address then."
She gestured wildly to the court building.
"I'm interning under Burhan sir."
His heart leapt as he struggled to keep a straight face.
"Burhan you say?That fool?"
"Excuse me?"she bristled."What do you know about Burhan sir?He is one of the smartest lawyers in the country and a good person."
He peered at her."Have you even met this man?"
"No,my internship starts tomorrow."
"How can you form such a high opinion of someone without having met them first? This is concerning behaviour for a lawyer."
"I have my sources and moreover,it's none of your business.I'll have your phone delivered to you at 9 tomorrow morning .Just wait for me here."she snapped.
"Wait! You haven't even asked my name."
"I don't want to associate myself with the likes of you.I sincerely hope tomorrow's the last time we meet."
She took off in a cloud of dust, leaving behind a rather perplexed Burhan.
