The Core Cabinet Group today has given a nod for inclusion of caste elements into the next census.
The census of India which was due in 2021, couldn't be carried out due to Covid pandemic and it's aftermath.
Till now the census never asked questions regarding the caste, a matter often raised by regional parties. Lately the chief opposition party Congress had also supported the stance and was demanding a caste census to ensure people get rights on the resources proportional to their population. It had already conducted caste based census in Bihar and Telangana where it was (at the time of census) being ruled by Congress and it's allies.
BJP however had never expressed its inclination towards the caste census, this move by government therefore comes as a surprise to many.
While Congress is patting their backs stating they compelled the government to do what is right, BJP has been busy claiming they are doing what's right for the upliftment of downtrodden, something which Congress never did when in government
There is a mixed reaction of public on this announcement, few feel this was a good move that government should have had brought in the past itself, others fear it might open a pandora's box paving the way for removal of 50% reservation limits, reservation in private sector and maybe even to wealth redistribution.
Many are also concerned about the timing of this announcement as right now people were still angry at the recent terror attacks in Kashmir which led to the deaths of 26 tourists who were killed point blank after checking their religion. People were expecting some action against terrorism at this time rather than bringing up such important other matter
What is your view on it
