. Yeah, I get that humans are flawed and even I might throw around red/green flags too fast sometimes. But the thing is, if the show just showed Neil as a flawed human who messes up nd make stupid mistakes like everyone else, no one would really have a problem. The issue is—they purposely build him up as this “perfect guy” who’s always respectful, never hurts anyone, always stands by what’s right never wrong, loves his parents, yada yada.
So when that kind of character suddenly can’t take “no” for an answer, starts throwing passive-aggressive taunts, and completely ignores Teju when she’s literally begging him to back out of the marriage—he doesn’t come across as a good guy anymore. He just looks selfish and lowkey entitled. Like, from the story pov, Teju was clearly in a bad place. Her fam was forcing her and Neil was her last hope to get out. But instead of understanding that, Neil made it all about himself—like “I love you, so you have to marry me.” That whole mindset just feels off, and I think that’s why a lot of people esp online are getting annoyed with his character.
That's a justified take. I completely agree with the fact that Neil looks selfish, annoying and even inconsiderate when he ignored Tejaswini's desperate pleas.
I am of the opinion that all the three lead characters are quite self-obsessed/centered and only think about themselves and not others around them when it's an issue that concerns them. Tejaswini considers ordinary-looking people like Neil beneath her, Ruturaj is the typical entitled celebrity archetype and Neil seems to be conditioned since childhood to live for others. So when he is attracted to someone for the first time, he is desperate to get her. In the process, he ends up thinking only about himself and his feelings, not realising that love needs to be reciprocated in order to flourish. Usually such submissive people who keep getting rejections for their desires (in this case Neil's passion for music and career choice, later Tejaswini as well) and live according to others' whims throughout their lives, act selfish and ignorant when they accidentally get a chance to choose for themselves, when they are in actual control of things. It's as if they can't handle the power that they suddenly hold over that decision.
Bold@: That's right. Writing could've been more nuanced and convincing. Let's see how they progress and redeem Neil or would they go downhill for ratings? I hope not.
Edit: Also, none of the characters seem to have the ability to take a "no" in their stride. Egoistic and entitled much?
