Digvijay wasn’t happy about the abortion; rather than being insensitive, he seemed to be considering what was best for both of them in a practical way. While he was concerned about his own future, he was even more worried about Rani’s dreams and career. This was evident in his monologue, when he woke up the next morning to the day he received the pregnancy news.
Digvijay appeared to handle Rani’s pregnancy news with understanding unlike Dhananjay, who showed little concern for his wife’s feelings when she faced taunts for not conceiving and blamed her, Digvijay never placed blame on Rani, even though their situations were different.
During their first conversation on this matter, he calmed her down, reassured her that she didn’t need to worry, and promised to handle everything. He listened to her and tried to help her foresee the possible scenarios if they continued with the pregnancy. Even when he suggested abortion, he hesitated before saying the word, which was clearly reflected on his face. Most importantly, he made an effort to initiate a discussion with Rani, while she often takes action first and reflects on it later.
I agree that their first conversation on this matter felt one-sided, as Rani didn’t really have a say. It seemed like she simply went along with what Digvijay thought was best for both of them - or rather, she wasn’t in the right state of mind to decide or express anything after everything that had happened in her life. She needed time to process it all, but she should have communicated that to Digvijay as well. If not on that day, she could have expressed her opinion the next day when he again asked if she felt he was pressuring her into abortion. But even then, she remained silent, making it difficult for him to gauge her true feelings. In the absence of clear opposition from her, he assumed she was on the same page as him.
She had another opportunity to express her feelings on their way to the hospital. Even later, after speaking with the lady, she remained in a dilemma. He asked her again, yet she said nothing. Sensing her nervousness, he held her hand to offer comfort and openly reassured her, repeating that this decision was in their best interest - not to pressure her, but to ease her doubts. He wasn't dismissing her emotions; he was trying to guide her through a situation where she seemed unsure of what she truly wanted. But once again, she chose not to express her opinion.
I understand why his actions might have seemed lacking in empathy, but considering how he repeatedly checked in on Rani, it seems like he was genuinely trying to support her. If he was as indifferent as it might have seemed, he probably wouldn’t have made such an effort to reassure her and check if she was feeling pressured.
He gave her time, shared his perspective honestly, and left space for her to express her opinion. Since she didn’t explicitly voice disagreement, he may have believed they were in agreement. After all, he’s not a mind reader who could magically know what’s going on in her heart and mind. This relationship is new for him too - he hasn’t known her for years.
The only thing I wished Digvijay had done differently was staying with Rani during the procedure. Given the circumstances, if his consultation was truly unavoidable, he could have at least requested the doctor to postpone the procedure for a few hours. Leaving her alone at such a vulnerable moment, even if practical from his perspective, was understandably difficult for Rani, who had placed her trust in him.
That said, I don’t think he was completely indifferent in that moment. He did express that he wanted to stay and promised to return as soon as possible. His actions seemed more rooted in responsibility rather than neglect - he was navigating both his duty as a doctor and his role as a husband. While it might not have been the ideal emotional response, his actions suggest that he did care for Rani throughout the situation.
He didn’t disregard her feelings; he noticed her anxiety and tried to lift her mood, even suggested listen to music to help her relax. That brief smile while driving wasn’t out of indifference - it was a reaction to thanking the doctor for keeping the news confidential.
His concern for her was evident when she got emotional after watching Priya’s video. He instinctively reached out to wipe her tears but stopped midway, a sign that her pain affected him.
I agree that his statement about waiting ten years to plan a baby was impractical, especially considering the childless situation of his elder brother and sister-in-law. Digvijay wasn’t unaware - he surely understood that there would always be societal pressure on Rani (or any woman he married) to have a child sooner. However, the decision to have a baby is ultimately between him and his wife, not anyone else.
It was simply his opinion, one that he likely formed long before marriage, when he was more career-focused and not recently. Since he has only recently married Rani, he is still adjusting to married life and has yet to fully understand what having a child truly means to a couple. At this stage, he views a baby primarily as a responsibility, which it is - but beyond that, a child also brings a couple into a beautiful phase of life, filled with love, affection, and shared experiences. He may not grasp this yet, and it’s natural not to expect him to. In time, as he and Rani wholeheartedly embrace their roles as husband and wife, he will likely come to appreciate this lifelong journey together.
