Yes Dashratha had allies but had there been no threat of a future siege where there is no king ,Ram would not have inquired about the afairs of the kingdom from Bharat in Chitrakoota. He continuously asks him about the ministers ,servants, spies etc.He also gives him tips to manage all three of them separately.Like don't forget to give salary promptly to army ,do not speak anything in front of servants, never call all ministers at once.Call them separately.Assign one spy after each minister as they know the information of the court. Also have someone to observe the spies spying on the ministers etc.I Dont remember a lot.

It could also be the following story..

Once, there was a disagreement between Sage Vishwamitra and Sage Vashishta. The two were debating about the greatest power in the universe. The former contested that Lord Rama’s arrows were supremely powerful, while the latter argued that God’s name was most powerful, even more powerful than God Himself. To test the validity of their theories, they proposed a test that was to be executed by Vishwamitra himself.

In those days it was customary for householder devotees to receive guests, especially holy ones, with great reverence. One failing this duty would often be the recipient of a curse or fall prey to unpleasant circumstances. Vishwamitra was aware of this and intentionally visited a devotee-king, Chandrabhanu, while he was in deep meditation. Since the king was in a trance, he failed to receive the saint reverentially. This infuriated the sage and he rushed to Lord Rama, who held holy ones in high esteem and went to great extents to appease them. Vishwamitra was aware of this fact and he tactfully made Rama take an oath that the one who insulted Vishwamitra would be killed by His infallible bow. True to His promise, Rama set out on a quest to kill the one who had offended the great Vishwamitra.

In the meanwhile, Sage Narada informed Chandrabhanu about the imminent danger. Frightened by the sure prospect of death, he sought Narada’s counsel and requested him if there was any way to avert the tragedy. Narada advised Chandrabhanu to seek protection from Hanuman. He further suggested that Chandrabhanu should reveal the source of danger only after he had extracted a promise from Hanuman.

As advised by the sage, Chandrabhanu held Hanuman’s feet and sought his protection. Hanuman took an oath in Rama’s name and promised to protect the king even at the cost of his own life. The stage was well set. On one hand the Lord was bound by His oath, while on the other His most loyal and beloved devotee Hanuman was bound by an opposing oath.

To fulfill his promise, Rama sent His powerful army to kill Chandrabhanu but it was vanquished by the valiant Hanuman in a trice. Rama then sent his brothers and ministers. They, too, were defeated by Hanuman. Finally, Rama Himself came to the scene to see the one who had given succor to Chandrabhanu. He was surprised to find Hanuman, his most beloved devotee, protecting the one who stood against Rama. The Lord immediately ordered Hanuman to give up, but the latter, with great humility submitted that he had taken an oath in Rama’s name and would never do anything to tarnish its glory. On explaining this Hanuman stood still, but every pore of his body was reverberating with Rama’s name.

Rama then lifted his divine bow and let loose a foray of arrows, all of which miraculously turned into flower garlands decorating the neck of the valiant Hanuman. Vashishta explained the astonished onlookers that even through Rama’s arrows were invincible, they were no match for His own name. It was then that everyone, including Vishwamitra, realized the power of God’s name. Rama was extremely pleased with the devotion of Hanuman and blessed him profusely. To keep his beloved devotee’s oath, the merciful Lord forsook His own and granted forgiveness to Chandrabhanu. Such is the power of the name. It can protect one from almighty God Himself, what power is there to fear then.

Most probably because Bharatha is new to being a crown prince. So far Rama was reared as the next in line for the throne and the eldest prince is usually educated a bit more in preparation. Also, he had left his country and this was his first chance to know something from his own family as to what was going on. Rama was probably passing on what he was taught, most probably by Dasaratha before he had left. It's also possible they are instructions he was supposed to pass on to his own sons/the next heir in the event he had to pass on the throne. During this conversation Rama pretty much treats Bharatha as his own son. A new king/crown prince needs to gather as much information and be in control as soon as possible. There is always a chance of a civil war close to a change in power.

Again this is not in VR..

This story (and it's versions) is folklore, I think...

Another version of this story has the king (his name was different, many mention that he was king of Kashi) returning from a hunt. He had to pass by a hermitage where sages Vasishta, Vishwamitra and many others were performing a yagya. He didn't want to pass by without greeting them as it would be akin to flouting decorum but can't enter the sacred yagya grounds since he was covered in dirt and blood after his hunt. Hence, he stood by the entrance and joined his palms above his head and said, "My salutations to the great sages like sage Vasishta and everyone else." Another version says he did not see Vishwamitra and hence didn't include the name. Sage Narada instigated Sage Vishwamitra who initially did not mind the king's words. Vishwamitra then flew into a rage and went to Rama and said a king had insulted him and he wants that person punished/dead. Rama promised that the king's head would be at Sage Vishwamitra's feet by the end of next day. In some versions a time frame is not mentioned but the promise was the same.

Meanwhile Sage Narada informs the king and instructs him to seek protection of Hanuman. In some versions the king is instructed to seek the help of Anjana since Hanuman would know of the incident and refuse to help the king but has to follow Anjana's orders or grant her requests.

War ensues between Rama and Anjaneya and Rama's arrows were found to be futile against Hanuman's chanting. Rama, thinking that he failed to fulfill his promise, got ready to give up his own life in lieu. At this point, Hanuman, the king and everyone else fell at his feet to stop him. Vishwamitra too said he doesn't need vengeance any more and releases Rama from his promise. Rama was still not convinced. Sage Narada arrives and says this was done to prove the greatness of his name and he needs not worry about the promise. He then asks the king to fall at Vishwamitra's feet such that his head touches the sage's feet. In some versions it was Hanuman who suggests this. Hence, Rama's promise was also fulfilled.

This story is very similar to the war between Krishna and Arjuna.

Dilipa's feats have been given to Rama already. Him offering his life in lieu for Nandhini was one of Dilipa's stories. Sagar/Asamanja could have been a good addition during vanvaas preparation but can be added here too.

Even if those stories aren't shown, we can have nice, funny and loving moments within the family... Much better than a time capsule in my opinion...
