Chapter 22: The Home Coming
Part 3: An Enchanted evening
Payal was at her office, going through the usual morning reports, when her phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen and saw Khushi's name. Curious, she picked up the call.
"Khushi! What's up?" Payal asked brightly.
"Hi, Payal," Khushi's voice sounded a bit hesitant. “Are you busy?”
“Just back at office after the long vacation”
“Oh”
“what happened?
"I... I need your help with something."
"Of course! What do you need?"
Khushi took a deep breath. "Arnav is taking me to dinner tonight”
“OH MY GEE” Payal screamed into the phone “tell me about it…”
“He said it’s a fine dining restaurant tonight. It's my first time going to such a place, and I don't want to look out of place there.”
“Sweety are you serious?” Payal asked her warmly. “You would never be out of place. You have a natural charm that fits in anywhere. And honestly, nothing else matters to Arnav than being with you. Trust me on this.”
“I know… But I want to put some efforts into this for him. Can you help me choose a dress?"
Payal's excitement was palpable.
"Say no further girl! Of course, I'll help you. This is going to be so much fun!"
“Oh thanks Payal, If you are not busy, would you be able to come down to Shantivan during your lunch time?"
"What are you speaking, I am coming there right away!” Payal exclaimed.
Later that day, Payal arrived at Shantivan, her face glowing with excitement. Khushi welcomed her with a warm hug, feeling relieved to have her friend's support. They exchanged a few pleasantries, catching up on the day's events and sharing a few laughs.
Without wasting any time, Payal rolled up her sleeves and dove right into Khushi's wardrobe. "Let's see what we have here," she said, her eyes gleaming with purpose. Khushi, meanwhile, fidgeted nervously, pulling out a few of her salwar and Kameez suits.
"What do you think of this one?" Khushi asked, holding up a vibrant orange kurta.
Payal gave it a critical look. "Hmm, it's nice, but not really what you'd wear to a fine dining restaurant. We need something a bit more elegant."
Khushi suddenly remembered a recent purchase and pulled out a black sequined kurti with silky bottoms from her wardrobe. "What about this one? I bought it last time we went shopping in Chandni Chowk with Arnav."
Payal examined the outfit thoughtfully. "It's gorgeous, Khushi, but it might be more suited for a DJ night or a party. Let's keep looking for something more fitting for a fine dining experience."
After going through several options and not finding anything satisfactory, Khushi sighed, feeling overwhelmed by the choices and the pressure to find the perfect outfit. "You know what, Payal? Maybe I should just go with my casual dress of kurti and patiala. It's comfortable, and I feel myself in it."
Payal looked at Khushi with determination.
"You know what? We need to go shopping. Let's find something that will make Arnav's jaw drop."
"Payal, I don't know," Khushi said, her voice tinged with doubt. "Maybe I'm making too big a deal out of this. It's just a dinner, after all."
Payal placed her hands on Khushi's shoulders, looking her straight in the eyes. "Khushi, it's not just a dinner. It's your first dinner date with Arnav. It’s special. You deserve to feel amazing and confident. Trust me, making a big deal out of it isn't silly; it's about celebrating you and your relationship."
Khushi sighed, a small smile tugging at her lips. "You think so?”
"I know so" Payal replied with a warm smile. "Now, let's get going and find you that perfect outfit."
With a determined glint in her eyes, Payal grabbed Khushi's hand and led her out of the house, straight to her car. "Come on, Khushi, I know just the place we need to go."
Khushi hesitated, her practical side surfacing. "Payal, please, let's not go to any expensive boutiques. I don't want to spend a fortune on just one outfit."
Payal, with a twinkle in her eye, gently dismissed Khushi's concerns. "Don't worry about the cost. Sometimes, it's worth splurging a little for something special. Besides, you deserve to feel like a queen tonight! Trust me on this."
They drove through the bustling streets, the excitement building as Payal navigated to a chic and trendy part of the city. Khushi couldn't help but feel a mix of apprehension and anticipation as they arrived at a boutique that exuded elegance and charm.
The two friends embarked on their search, exploring countless dresses in the boutique and browsing through an array of catalogues. Payal eagerly suggested several options, each one more dazzling than the last. But Khushi, while appreciative of her friend's efforts, couldn't quite find the one that spoke to her.
"This one is nice," Khushi said, holding up a stunning long dark blue gown. "But it's not quite right."
Payal nodded in understanding, her eyes scanning the racks for the ideal choice. "We'll know it when we see it," she assured Khushi.
Finally, their search led them to a breathtaking red saree adorned with a sequined blouse. Khushi hesitated for a moment, her fingers tracing the intricate details. "Red is such a flashy color," she mused. "But it's Arnav's favorite."
Payal's eyes lit up with approval. "Wow! it will look ravishing on you, Khushi”
“I don’t know…” Khushi was hesitant
"You know, Khushi, you're always so comfortable in a saree. It's like a second skin to you. If there's anyone who can carry that saree with confidence, it's you."
Khushi looked hesitant, biting her lip as she studied the saree.
“And you know red is Arnav’s favorite color” Payal went on convincing her “and red also suits you so well.”
"You think I should try it on?”
“I think you should wear it for the night”

Back at the Raizada Mansion, NK was pondering over the recent revelations about the mysteries of his lineage that made him restless.
He decided to talk to Dadi, his eyes filled with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. "Dadi, I have always wondered about our family history. There are so many unanswered questions. Can you tell me more about it?"
Dadi looked at NK, her gaze steady but filled with a hint of surprise. She always reveled at talking about the greatness of their family. She thought the children didn’t give enough attention
"Ask your questions, beta. I will tell you what I know."
NK sat beside Dadi in her dimly lit bedroom. He had been wrestling with a question that refused to leave his mind, and he knew he cannot ask her about it directly and so he decided to approach it delicately.
"Dadi," he began softly, "Why wasn’t I named starting with A like any of my other siblings?"
Dadi's eyes softened with a nostalgic glow. "I wanted to name you Nanda Kishore because you resembled your Dada. It was a way to honor his memory."
NK's curiosity was piqued. "Do I really look like him? Did Dada also have a nut allergy like me?"
Dadi shook her head gently. "No, your Dada did not have a nut allergy."
NK's brows furrowed in confusion. "Then how come I have a nut allergy that no one else in the family has?"
Dadi's expression grew thoughtful. "Sometimes, these things happen without any clear explanation. It doesn’t change who you are or the love we have for you."
He took a deep breath and decided to ask the next question.
"Dadi, what are my father's and mother's blood groups?"
Dadi's eyes flickered with a hint of hesitation before she answered. "Your father was AB+ve and your mother was B+ve."
NK frowned, trying to reconcile this information with what he knew. "Dadi, how can I then have an O+ve blood group when my father is AB+ve? Both his dominant and dormant groups does not have an O component"
Dadi's face tensed slightly. "You got your Nani’s blood group, beta," she said, her voice steady but evasive.
NK shook his head gently, knowing that the science didn't add up. "Dadi, it doesn't work like that. A child gets one of dad’s and one of mom’s. if one of the parents have AB+ve, there is no chance for a child to have O+ve. Arnav has AB+ve, Akaash has B+ve and Anjali has A+ve"
Dadi's expression grew closed off, avoiding the question further. "Some things are not always explainable by science, NK," she murmured.
NK sighed, feeling another question pressing at the edge of his mind. "Dadi, there's something else I need to talk to you about. I had a health checkup recently, and the doctor mentioned I have a minor condition that's usually genetic. It's typically passed down from the father's side."
Dadi's expression turned concerned. "What condition is it, NK?"
"It's a slight sensitivity to sunlight," NK explained, trying to keep his tone light. "Nothing too serious, just something I need to be aware of."
Dadi's expression softened with a mix of concern and curiosity. "Your father never mentioned anything like that," she said, her voice thoughtful. "But it's possible that it didn't affect him as noticeably, or perhaps he was simply unaware."
"But it made me wonder. Because Arnav and Akaash don't seem to have it."
Dadi's eyes clouded with thought. She took a moment before responding. "Sometimes these things can skip generations or manifest differently."
NK tried to process her words, but the uncertainty lingered. "I see. It's just strange because the doctor said it's almost always inherited from the father's genes."
NK took a deep breath, deciding to voice another lingering question. "Dadi, why momma did not travel to Lucknow for birthing me like she did for Arnav and Akaash?"
Dadi's expression shifted. "No, she didn't go to Lucknow for your birth. Her parents were here in New Delhi by that time, since your uncle had just gotten married and settled down here."
NK nodded slowly. "I see. That makes sense," he murmured, though his mind continued to turn over the mysteries of his own history.
Dadi's gaze sharpened slightly, a flicker of suspicion crossing her face. "NK, why do you keep asking these questions?" she inquired, her tone gentle but probing.
NK hesitated, sensing the shift in her demeanor. "I'm just trying to understand more about our family's history and my own health," he replied cautiously.
Dadi nodded, her expression softening but still guarded. "It's important to know our history, but some things are better left in the past," she said, her voice carrying a note of finality. "Your parents loved you very much and always did what they thought was best for you."
NK could sense that Dadi was dodging his questions, but he decided not to press further. "I understand, Dadi. Thank you for sharing what you have," he said, offering her a reassuring smile.
Dadi reached out and patted his hand. "You focus on taking care of yourself. That's what matters most," she said, effectively closing the topic.
NK nodded, accepting her words, though the unanswered questions continued to swirl in his mind.

When Arnav and Akaash arrived at Shantivan at 6 in the evening, Payal opened the door for them. Arnav asked her playfully, "Why are you here and not in office and why were you not there during the weekly leadership review meeting?"
Payal responded with a playful smile, "I have many roles to play, Arnav, and right now, I am a dutiful friend."
Arnav chuckled, "Well, I had to drive your husband around because you hijacked his car to do friend duties."
Payal and Akaash teased him a bit, and then he saw Khushi ready for the date. His eyes widened with admiration. "Wow," he exclaimed, "Khushi, you look stunning."
Payal nudged Akaash lightly and said, "I never thought I'd see the day when Arnav was floored."
Arnav, with his usual charm, replied, "I guess there's a first time for everything."
As they prepared to leave for their date, Payal couldn't resist giving Arnav some good-natured advice.
"And Arnav, make sure you don't bore her with office talk. This is supposed to be a fun night, not a board meeting."
Arnav, never one to back down, smirked and replied, "Ah… Did you have a bad experience with Akaash that you advise us with that? Akaash, you should take notes, this comment, looks like is aimed for you!"
“Bhai!” Akaash called out indignantly. “Why am I the scape goat for the jibes between you two?”
Khushi, with curiosity sparkling in her eyes, asked, "Are you two also going out on a date tonight?"
Arnav quipped, "They are still in their honeymoon period, Khushi."
Akaash grinned and said, "Actually, we are visiting Payal’s parents for dinner."
Arnav nodded, "Sounds like a plan. Have a good time, you both."
Payal, with a hint of sarcasm, retorted, "At my parents' place? Yeah, sure." Everyone knew the tension that still lingered between her and her parents after her dramatic fight with her mother.
Arnav, sensing the shift in mood, quickly interjected, "Well, give them our regards, and hopefully, it will be a pleasant evening."
Payal laughed, "Touché, Arnav. Have a great night, you two."
With a final wave, Arnav and Khushi headed out, the laughter and smiles lingering on their faces following the playful banter with Akaash and Payal.
***
As Arnav and Khushi walked towards his sleek, black car, he opened the passenger door for her with a smile. "After you, milady," he said, bowing slightly
Khushi giggled as she got into the car.
“Where are we going?”
“It’s a surprise”
“Oh come on, it will anyway be a surprise. This is the first time for me!”
Arnav chuckled as he settled into the driver’s seat. “We're going to that new rooftop restaurant, 'Skyline,' I've heard great things about it."
Khushi's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Oh! Ok…”
The drive was filled with lighthearted banter and laughter. Arnav glanced over at Khushi, who was looking out the window, her face glowing in the streetlights. "You know, Khushi, I never thought I'd enjoy these little moments so much. You have a way of making everything special."
Khushi turned to him, her eyes softening. "it's the same for me too... If 6 months back someone told me that I would take time to go shopping for a date night, choose to wear red because someone likes it, I would have laughed at it… But here I am…"
Arnav's voice softened as he glanced at Khushi once more. "You look incredibly beautiful tonight, Khushi. I'm honestly scared that I won't be able to take my eyes off you. Maybe I shouldn't have opted to drive," he confessed with a playful smirk.
Khushi blushed, her cheeks turning a shade deeper than her dress. "Arnav, stop teasing me," she said, playfully swatting his arm but unable to hide her smile.
Arnav chuckled and gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "I mean every word," he said earnestly.
"You are not any less, you look incredibly handsome tonight," she said, her voice filled with genuine admiration.
Arnav's eyes sparkled with mischief as he leaned in. "Thank you, Khushi. But when have I not been incredibly handsome?"
“Really?!” she said, shaking her head in amusement.
“Come on say it, I know its in the tip of your tongue”
“What?”
Arnav dramatically placed a hand on his heart and imitated her voice, "Oh, don't annoy me Laad Governor," he said, exaggerating every word with an over-the-top flourish.
Khushi burst out laughing
"You know," Khushi said, her laughter subsiding as she caught her breath, "Anjali, NK, Payal and Akaash couldn't believe it when they found out I call you Laad Governor. They asked if you really let me call you that."
Arnav's eyes twinkled with amusement. "And what did you tell them?" he asked, genuinely curious.
"I told them that you call me names too, so it's only fair" Khushi replied with a playful grin.
Arnav chuckled and shook his head. "Fine, next time you can tell them that Arnav secretly loves it when you call him that" he said with a wink.
Khushi's heart swelled with warmth as she turned back to the window, trying to compose herself. Oh! why is this man so charming?! The city lights seemed to twinkle just for them.

Payal and Akaash hadn’t been able to visit her parents after they were back from their honeymoon because of Anjali’s accident. Her parents eagerly enquired about their trip, curiosity shining in their eyes.
"So, tell us all about your honeymoon!?" Payal's mother asked, her eyes twinkling with excitement.
With a warm smile, Akaash replied, "We went to Mauritius and then Bali. It was absolutely beautiful. The beaches in Mauritius were stunning, and Bali's culture was so rich and vibrant."
Payal chimed in, "We did some snorkeling in Mauritius and visited a few temples in Bali. It was an unforgettable experience."
As the conversation shifted to family well-being, Payal's father, Sharad, asked, "How is everyone doing? And how is Anjali's recovery coming along?"
"She's doing much better now," Payal reassured him. "Thank you for asking."
Turning to Akaash, Sharad inquired about their quarterly results. "And how are the RP results looking, Akaash?"
Akaash responded with a reassuring smile, "Things have started to look up. The results are promising, and we are optimistic about the future."
"Payal mentioned that you are about to be made CEO of a new hospitality chain. How is that progressing?" he inquired, his tone filled with curiosity.
Akaash nodded, his expression reflecting his enthusiasm for the new venture. "It is progressing well, uncle. We've been making significant strides, and I am confident that it will be a great success," he assured him.
"That's wonderful to hear," Payal's mother said, her face beaming with pride. "We're so proud of you both."
Payal almost rolled her eyes, remembering the last time they visited. She had stormed out with Akaash because her mother hadn’t been very proud of her son-in-law. She had been very rude. Yet, today, the atmosphere felt different because she can now boast to her friends that her son in law is a CEO.
Ever the polite and naïve man, Akaash thanked her mother for her kind words. "We appreciate your support," he said with a humble smile. "It means a lot to us."
Their conversation continued, as they settled into the cozy living room. Suraj, Payal’s cousin joined them later.
Greetings were exchanged warmly as Suraj joined the two for a chat.
"So, Suraj, I heard you've signed on for a new show. What's it about?" Akaash asked
Suraj's eyes lit up at the mention of his latest project. "Yes, I have! It's a historical drama set in ancient India. The storyline is fascinating, and the characters are incredibly rich. I'm really excited about it," he shared, his enthusiasm palpable.
Payal chimed in. "That sounds amazing, Suraj! When does it start filming?"
Suraj grinned, clearly pleased by their interest. "We start next month. It's going to be a lot of work, but I'm looking forward to the challenge," he replied.
Akaash nodded appreciatively. "I'm sure it will be a great success. You have a knack for bringing characters to life," he complimented.
Suraj laughed modestly. "Thanks, Akaash." he said. "So, how's the new hospitality chain coming along?"
"It's progressing well! We are thinking of some unique themes and may be when it is ready, we will get you for promotions” he said
“Oh anytime!” Suraj quipped
Payal raised her eyebrows in surprise. "Did you really mean it, Akaash?" she asked in a low voice, glancing around to ensure no one else was listening. "If Arnav finds out, he's going to be livid," she added with a smirk.
Akaash chuckled softly, the corners of his eyes crinkling with amusement. "I know, Payal. But sometimes you need to shake things up a bit, right?" he replied playfully.
"How is Anjali doing these days?" Suraj asked, his tone tinged with genuine concern.
Payal glanced at Akaash before responding. "She's doing better, Suraj. Thank you for asking," she replied warmly.
"That's a relief to hear," Suraj said, his expression softening. "Anjali has been through so much. It's good to know she's on the mend."
Payal smiled gently. "Yes, she's a fighter. But it's still tough on her some days. We're all doing our best to support her."
Suraj nodded thoughtfully. "If there's anything she needs, please let me know. I'd like to help in any way I can."
Akaash appreciated Suraj's concern. "Thank you, Suraj. Your support means a lot to us and to her. She's lucky to have friends like you."
"Have the doctors given any updates on her recovery?" Suraj asked, his brow furrowing slightly.
"She's making steady progress," Payal replied. "The physical injuries are healing, but the emotional scars will take time. We're taking it one day at a time."
Suraj sighed. "I can't even imagine what she's going through. It's just so unexpected."
"It is," said Akaash.
Suraj's concern was evident as he continued, "And the investigation? Are there any new leads on finding the intruders?"
Akaash sighed, frustration evident in his voice. "The investigation is underway. The police are still piecing together clues and trying to identify the intruders. It's a challenging process, but we remain hopeful that they'll make a breakthrough soon."
Suraj frowned, concern etched on his face. "It's so frustrating to wait and not have answers.” He turned to Akaash, his voice earnest. "Akaash, is there something I can do to help with the investigations on Anjali's kidnapper and attacker?" he asked, his concern evident.
Akaash appreciated the offer and placed a reassuring hand on Suraj's shoulder. "Thank you, Suraj. It means a lot that you want to help. But Arnav's friend, ACP Abhimanyu, is already working on the case. He's very capable and has made significant progress," he assured him.
Suraj nodded, thoughtful. "I understand, but I have some connections and resources that might be useful. There are private investigators and security experts I know who could offer a different perspective or additional support. Sometimes having more eyes on the case can make a difference," he suggested.
Akaash listened, considering Suraj's proposal. "That's a good point, Suraj. I'll discuss it with Arnav and see what he thinks. Any help we can get is valuable," he said, appreciating Suraj's proactive stance.
After a moment of silence, Suraj spoke again, his tone more contemplative. "You know, Payal, my parents have been urging me to settle down," he began, choosing his words carefully. "They've even suggested a few of my co-actors as potential matches," he added with a faint smile. "But honestly, I don't see myself with any of them."
Payal raised an eyebrow, intrigued by this unexpected revelation. "Oh? And why is that?" she asked, her curiosity piqued.
Suraj hesitated, glancing at Akaash before continuing. "I've always felt that finding the right person is about more than just convenience or what others think is suitable," he explained, his eyes meeting Payal's. "It's about a genuine connection, someone who truly understands and complements you."
Payal nodded, sensing that there was more to his words than he was letting on. "I suppose that's true," she agreed, her voice softening. "It's important to be with someone who shares your values and brings out the best in you."
Suraj's gaze lingered on her for a moment before he spoke again. "Exactly. And sometimes, the right person is closer than you think. It's just a matter of recognizing it," he said, his tone hinting at a deeper meaning.
Payal decided to probe further. "Suraj, do you have someone special in your life?" she asked, her tone casual but her eyes searching.
Suraj chuckled softly, his gaze shifting momentarily. "Maybe," he replied with a teasing smile. "But it's complicated, you know? Sometimes, they are right in front of you, and you don't even realize it."
Payal's curiosity was now fully piqued. "Oh, come on, Suraj. You can't leave it at that. Who is she?" she pressed gently.
Suraj's smile softened, and he glanced over at Akaash before turning back to Payal. "Let's just say that I'm still figuring things out" he said, his eyes twinkling with a hint of a deeper emotion.
Payal looked at Suraj thoughtfully. "Is this a recent development?" she asked, her curiosity evident.
Suraj nodded, his expression turning serious. "Yes, actually. There was a recent incident that shook me up a bit," he admitted. "A near miss that made me realize that life is too unpredictable to keep delaying important decisions."
Payal felt a flicker of understanding, her thoughts turning to Anjali. She wondered if Suraj's frequent inquiries about Anjali was more than just a concern. Could it be that he harbored feelings for Anjali? The possibility made her smile inwardly, and she decided to keep an eye on how things unfolded between them.
Later that evening, as Payal and Akaash prepared to leave, she decided to share her thoughts with her husband. "Akaash, have you noticed how Suraj often asks about Anjali?" she began, her voice low so as not to be overheard.
Akaash looked at her, intrigued. "Why do you ask?"
Payal hesitated for a moment before continuing. "I think Suraj might be interested in Anjali, more than just being concerned about her health," she confessed. "Remember last month at the family gathering? He spent almost the entire evening flirting with her. And during our wedding reception they even danced together."
Akaash considered her words, recalling the events she mentioned. "I don’t know. Suraj's concern doesn’t seem to go beyond casual interest."
"Actually, today evening he mostly spoke about Anjali," Payal added, recalling their conversations from earlier. "He kept bringing her up, sharing little anecdotes and asking about her well-being."
Akaash considered this for a moment. "You know, Payal, it could genuinely be concern," he pointed out thoughtfully. "Suraj just worried about Anjali's well-being, especially after her major incident two weeks back."
Payal nodded, acknowledging the possibility. "True, but there's something in the way he talks about her. It's not just the usual concern. It's...deeper," she mused, her voice trailing off as she tried to find the right words. "I have a feeling and I think we should keep an eye on this and see how things develop. Maybe there's something there that Anjali hasn't realized yet."
Akaash agreed, and with a shared smile, they left Payal's parents' place, both pondering the potential budding romance between Suraj and Anjali.

The morning sun began to rise, casting a warm golden hue across the family home of Dasari’s in the US.
Despite the earliness of the hour, Kiran paced nervously in the living room, her heart pounding with a mixture of fear and anticipation. She glanced at Vishy, who sat composed but thoughtful, his eyes reflecting the gravity of the moment. They had decided that today was the day to reveal the secret they had held for almost three decades—the truth about their son, Dhruv.
Kiran paused, her worry deepening as she considered the repercussions. "Vishy, are we doing the right thing? Given complicated situation we are in right now, what if this revelation makes things worse?"
Vishy squeezed her hand gently, his gaze steady and reassuring. "Kiran, I understand your concerns. This will surely be difficult, but it is the right way to go. We owe Dhruv the truth, no matter the consequences. We've always faced challenges together, and this will be no different."
Kiran sighed, her heart heavy with fear. "I'm so worried about Dhruv's reaction. What if he feels betrayed or hurt?"
Vishy reached out, taking Kiran's hand in his. "He is mature, Kiran. Dhruv will handle it well," he reassured her, his voice steady and comforting.
Kiran nodded, drawing strength from her husband's confidence. It was time to face their fears. They had asked Dhruv to meet them at the family home, a place filled with countless memories and shared moments of joy.
The Dasari household was soon bustling with activity as Sasha got ready and left for her college. But when the house suddenly felt a lot quieter, Kiran’s nervousness returned, and an air of anticipation settled in as they patiently waited for Dhruv to arrive home. They knew that today was a turning point for their family, and the weight of the upcoming conversation with Dhruv loomed large in their minds.

As Arnav and Khushi arrived at the 7-star Michelin restaurant, Khushi was immediately captivated by the ambiance. The entrance was adorned with elegant drapes and chandeliers that cast a warm, inviting glow. The soft murmur of conversations mingled with the gentle strains of a live piano, creating an atmosphere of refined sophistication. Fresh floral arrangements added splashes of color and fragrance, enhancing the luxurious setting.
A maître d', impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, approached them with a gracious smile. "Good evening, Mr. Raizada and Ms. Gupta. Welcome to 'Skyline'. Allow me to guide you to your table."
Khushi turned to Arnav, a puzzled expression on her face. "How do they know my name?" she asked quietly, her curiosity evident.
Arnav's eyes twinkled with amusement as he leaned in closer. "Well, I might have mentioned a few times that I was bringing someone very special tonight," he admitted. "And knowing the staff here, they like to make sure everything is perfect for their guests."
Khushi's eyes widened with delight as they followed the maître d' through the restaurant. Each step revealed more of the stunning decor, with tables elegantly set with fine china and crystal glasses. The lighting was perfectly dimmed to create an intimate ambiance, while fairy lights twinkled like stars overhead.
They were led to a secluded corner table that offered a breathtaking panoramic view of the city skyline, the perfect setting for their special night.
The ambiance was perfect, with fairy lights twinkling and soft music playing in the background. Arnav pulled out a chair for Khushi at their table to her surprise.
"Thank you," she said with surprise
Arnav sat down in his chair, a playful smile dancing on his lips. "Well, I need to keep up with your expected standards," he remarked casually.
Khushi tilted her head, a puzzled look crossing her face. "What are you talking about, my standards?" she asked, her curiosity piqued.
He leaned in closer, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "Mr. Darcy" he said simply, leaving Khushi momentarily speechless.
Khushi shook her head with a soft laugh. "I wouldn't expect Mr. Darcy to do something like that," she confessed, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
Arnav leaned back, a triumphant smile spreading across his face. "Well, I like to exceed expectations," he replied, earning a genuine laugh from her.
As they settled into their seats, a waiter arrived to take their orders. "What would you like to drink, Khushi?" Arnav asked.
Khushi took a moment to absorb the atmosphere. It was her first time in such an extravagant setting, and the options on the menu seemed endless. She glanced around, slightly overwhelmed by the grandeur.
Arnav noticed her hesitation and smiled warmly. "Take your time, Khushi. There's no rush," he said gently, his eyes filled with adoration as he watched her. Knowing that she might not prefer alcoholic drinks, he leaned in and whispered, "If you want something without alcohol, there are some fantastic mocktails here. How about trying a mango mojito or maybe a refreshing cucumber cooler?"
Khushi's eyes lit up at the suggestion. "A mocktail sounds perfect," she said, feeling more at ease with Arnav's considerate gesture.
Khushi scanned the menu, her fingers tracing the elegant designs on the pages. After a few contemplative moments, she finally made her choice. "I'll have a mango mojito without rum," she replied with a smile.
"I'll go with a classic old fashioned," Arnav said, handing the menus back to the waiter. "And we'll start with the chef's special appetizers."
As they waited for their drinks, Arnav looked around at the beautifully decorated restaurant and then back at Khushi. "So, do you like the ambiance here?" he asked with a gentle smile.
Khushi nodded enthusiastically. "It's absolutely lovely. Have you been here before?" she asked, her curiosity evident.
Arnav chuckled softly. "Yes, a few times for business meetings. The owner is a good friend of mine," he revealed.
"Have you ever come here for a date before?"
Arnav smiled, his tongue in his cheek.
"Is that a trick question? Should I avoid answering it?" he teased.
But Khushi simply smiled at him, coaxing him to answer.
"Well," Arnav began, "this is actually a pretty new place. It opened only a few months back, and I haven't had the chance to bring a date here before."
Khushi pouted playfully. "Wrong answer."
Arnav laughed, shaking his head. "The truth is, I wanted to bring you here. I only asked you out recently, so..."
He left the sentence hanging, his eyes meeting hers with a tender look. Khushi's pout turned into a wide smile, clearly pleased with his response.
Their drinks arrived, and they clinked glasses. "Here's to us, to new beginnings and everything beautiful that awaits us in this journey together " Arnav toasted.
As the evening progressed, they talked about their hopes and dreams, their fears and insecurities, and everything in between. The connection between them deepened with each passing moment.
The main course arrived, and it was an exquisite array of dishes. Arnav had ordered a beautifully grilled salmon, accompanied by a medley of roasted vegetables and a delicate lemon butter sauce. Khushi, being vegetarian, had chosen a vibrant plate of paneer tikka, served with a side of fragrant basmati rice and a rich, creamy dal makhani.
As they were finishing their main courses, the server returned with a warm smile. "Would you like to try anything else from our menu?" he inquired.
Khushi, feeling adventurous, looked at the menu and said, "I think I would like to try the avocado and quinoa salad with caviar sauce."
Arnav raised an eyebrow, his expression a mix of amusement and concern. "Are you sure, Khushi? I'm not certain you'll enjoy it."
She glanced at him, her eyes sparkling with determination. "I can try something new, right? How bad can it be?"
When the salad arrived, it looked beautifully presented, but the moment Khushi took a bite, her excitement waned. She suddenly realized that the caviar sauce was non-vegetarian. Removing the sauce, she tried the salad alone and found the vegetables to be bland and unappetizing.
Her face fell slightly, trying to mask her disappointment, but Arnav noticed. "Khushi," he said gently, "it's okay. Not every new experience turns out great."
She sighed, giving him a rueful smile. "I guess you're right. Lesson learned."
Arnav slid his plate of roasted vegetables towards her. "Here, have some more of this.” He said sprinkling it with pepper and salt.
Khushi hesitated but then accepted with a grateful nod. "Thank you"
Arnav tried Khushi’s salad and winced slightly but then smiled. "It's not bad."
Khushi, still unsure, asked, "Are you sure, Arnav? You don't have to eat it if you don't like it."
Arnav chuckled softly, "I've tried far worse ones, believe me. Don't worry about it."
They clinked glasses again, laughing softly at the little mishap, and continued their evening, savoring the meal, appreciating both the flavors and the company. As they continued their conversation, the bond between them grew stronger, fortified by shared experiences and mutual understanding.
Their conversation was momentarily interrupted by the arrival of the dessert. The server placed a beautifully crafted tiramisu in front of Khushi and a rich chocolate fondant for Arnav. Khushi's eyes lit up as she saw the dessert, her earlier disappointment forgotten.
"Wow, this looks amazing," she exclaimed, picking up her spoon eagerly.
Arnav smiled, pleased to see her enthusiasm return. "I thought you might like it," he said, watching her take the first bite.
Khushi closed her eyes, savoring the creamy texture and the perfect balance of sweetness. "This is incredible, Arnav," she said, her voice filled with delight.
Arnav took a bite of his fondant, the warm, gooey chocolate melting in his mouth. He nodded in agreement, "It certainly is. Try this too"
They shared bites of each other's desserts, laughing and teasing each other. The mishap with the salad was forgotten, replaced by the joy of a delicious end to their meal.
"Arnav," Khushi said softly, "Thank you for tonight, it was magical!"
Arnav reached across the table, taking her hand in his. "Khushi, being with you makes everything worthwhile. Here's to many more nights like this."
As they finished their dinner and watched the city lights twinkle below, they knew that this was just the beginning of many shared adventures. Their date night was a perfect blend of laughter, love, and unforgettable moments.
***
Kiran and Vishy stood up as they heard the sound of Dhruv’s car pulling into the driveway. The familiar hum of the engine brought a wave of nostalgia and comfort. Kiran took a deep breath, her nervousness momentarily eclipsed by the sight of her son stepping out of the car, his presence a reassuring reminder of the bond they shared.
Dhruv arrived, his presence filling the room with his usual energy and warmth. “Hi Dad, Mom”
As Dhruv walked through the front door, Kiran couldn't help but smile, despite the anxiety gnawing at her. She and Vishy moved to embrace him, feeling the warmth and strength in his hug. "It's so good to see you, Dhruv," Kiran said, her voice tinged with both relief and apprehension.
Dhruv returned their embrace warmly, his eyes twinkling with curiosity. "It's good to be home, Mom, Dad. Is everything okay?" His gaze shifted between his parents, reading the concern etched on their faces. "You both look a bit tense."
Vishy placed a comforting hand on Dhruv's shoulder. "We're glad you're here, son. Come in!”
Dhruv's arrival was marked by a rush of emotions that neither Kiran nor Vishy could entirely suppress. As soon as he stepped into the home, the very air seemed to shift, filled with the weight of what was to come. His familiar smile and the warmth he emanated were both a comfort and a poignant reminder of the momentous truth they were about to unveil.
Kiran moved closer to Dhruv, her heart pounding in her chest. She took his hands in hers, feeling the familiar warmth and strength that had always been a source of comfort.
"Mom," Dhruv said, returning her affection with a puzzled but affectionate smile. "What’s going on? You both seem a bit... off today."
Kiran’s grip tightened on Dhruv's arm, as if drawing strength from his presence. "Come, let’s sit down," she suggested, guiding him toward the living room.
"Alright" he said, his voice steady but edged with concern, there was a sense of something important hanging in the air. "So, what’s this about? Is it something serious?" he asked, a hint of concern in his voice. Dhruv's eyes scanned the room, looking for any sign of his sister. "And Sasha? Is everything good with her college? I haven't heard much from her lately."
Kiran's face softened at the mention of her daughter. "Yes, she's doing well. College has been keeping her busy, but she's handling it wonderfully."
Dhruv sighed in relief, feeling a bit more at ease. "I'm glad to hear that. It's good to know she's doing alright."
Dhruv followed his mother to the living room, noting how her usual calm demeanor seemed fraught with unspoken worry. They sat down, and for a moment, an uneasy silence filled the space between them.
Kiran took a deep breath, her hands trembling slightly as she held Dhruv's. "Dhruv, there's something important we need to talk about," she began, her voice heavy with emotion.
Dhruv's brow furrowed with concern as he searched his mother's face for answers. "Mom, what is it? You seem really worried. Is Nani okay back in India?" he asked, his voice filled with genuine concern for his family.
“Nani is fine Dhruv” Vishy said “Before we discuss, let's have our brunch. We thought it would be nice to sit down together, Mom prepared all your favorites" he suggested, guiding Dhruv to the dining table.
As they moved to the dining table, Dhruv kept wondering what worried his parents so much
"So, did both of you get your health checkups done? How did they go?" he asked, trying to mask his concern with a casual tone.
Kiran and Vishy exchanged another glance, this one filled with a mix of relief and apprehension. "Yes, we did," Vishy replied, his voice steady but subdued. "The results were mostly good, just a few things we need to keep an eye on. Nothing to worry about right now."
Kiran nodded in agreement, adding, "We're taking care of ourselves, Dhruv.”
As they sat down, Dhruv couldn't shake the feeling that something significant was on his parents' minds. He watched them closely as they moved through the familiar routines of setting the table and serving the food, noticing the uncharacteristic tension in their movements.
"Mom, Dad, what's going on?" Dhruv finally asked, his voice gentle but insistent. "I can tell something is bothering you. Please, just tell me."
Kiran and Vishy exchanged a glance, the unspoken words passing between them. "Dhruv, this is about you," Vishy began, his tone gentle but serious. "It's something we've kept in our hearts for a long time."
Dhruv chuckled, "Is this about my marriage? Dad, Emma and I will take that step when we're ready," he said, anticipating the talk.
Kiran took a deep breath, her voice shaking slightly. "This is not about you and Emma” she said softly.
Dhruv, sensing the gravity of the moment, took a deep breath and asked, "Mom is it… is everything is alright back in India? I heard Arnav postponed the quarterly results and that Raizada Group of Companies was having some financial issues after Mama’s death."
Kiran nodded, her expression growing more somber. "Yes, things have been complicated, but Arnav and Akaash are managing. But what we need to discuss now is even more important."
“What is it?”
Kiran hesitated, her eyes darting to the kitchen. "Why don’t we enjoy the meal first? I made all your favorite dishes," she said, trying to distract him with a warm smile.
Dhruv nodded, though he remained unconvinced. He decided to go along with it for now, letting the conversation flow lightly as they savored the familiar flavors of home-cooked food.
The brunch stretched on with small talk and shared memories, but no matter how hard Dhruv tried to engage in the moment, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something significant was left unsaid. As they finished their meal, he set down his fork and looked at his parents with renewed determination.
"Alright, we’ve had food," Dhruv said, his tone gentle yet insistent. "Now, can you please tell me what’s really going on? I can sense it’s something important, and I need to know."
Kiran and Vishy exchanged another glance, and this time, there was a silent agreement that they could no longer delay the inevitable. Vishy took a deep breath and began. "It's about your birth, Dhruv," he told him.
“Oh wait… You know even Emma pointed out this to me… we recently celebrated your 25th wedding anniversary, but I’m 28” Dhruv's smile faded as he looked at his parents, searching their faces for answers. "Wait, are you saying... Did you both have me before you got married?"
Vishy shook his head, his expression serious. "No, Dhruv.” He took a deep breath “It’s about parentage”
Dhruv's heart raced, and he could feel the weight of his parents' words even before they were spoken. He tried to prepare himself for whatever was coming, but nothing could have braced him for Vishy’s next words.
"We are not your biological parents," Vishy said, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. “You were... you were adopted."
Dhruv stared at his parents, a half-smile tugging at his lips as he tried to process their words. "Is this some kind of joke?" he asked, his voice tinged with a mixture of disbelief and hope that they would laugh and tell him it was all a misunderstanding.
But the somber expressions on Kiran and Vishy's faces remained unchanged, and the gravity of the moment settled in. There was no laughter, no light-hearted denial—only the weight of the truth hanging heavily in the air.
As the realization dawned on him, Dhruv felt a sudden chill run down his spine. This was no joke. His parents were telling the truth.
To be continued.
