Tara left such valuable information for them. Even police is involved while someone like Abhi is under questioning for actions that were justified.

From the author's desk: Hello peeps,

The term Fall foliage denotes the colours of the fall season. The autumn signifies that the changes are inevitable in the cycle of life. Old leaves give away to new ones and thus life continues. This chapter is named thus to signify the phase of the story where we are going through changes. Where we are both preserving the leasons and embracing the new!

Thank you for your wonderful comments and encouragement, More notes at the end of the update!

Happy reading!

Chapter 23: Wheels of change

Part 1: Fall foliage

Arnav arrived at Shantivan after Khushi’s call, feeling the familiar rush of anticipation mixed with a hint of anxiety. As he stepped into the Shantivan, his eyes fell upon Mama, who was sitting comfortably, sipping tea.

Arnav noticed Khushi standing anxiously beside Mama, her fingers fidgeting as Mama was directing a series of questions at her. Her eyes darted towards Arnav, seeking silent reassurance amidst the tension brewing in the room. Mama’s stern expression suggested displeasure, clearly upset that he wasn’t consulted before Khushi was allowed to stay at Shantivan.

ā€œArnav, how come Khushi is staying at my house and I don’t know it?ā€ Mama's tone is serious, catching Arnav off guard. The weight of his words hangs heavily in the air, adding to the already thickening tension.

Arnav and Khushi exchange puzzled glances, their minds racing to find a suitable response. The silence is palpable, the tension almost unbearable.

ā€œMama ji, please don't blame Arnav on this, Dadi was not comfortable with me staying there at RM. It was my decision to move out of Shantivan to avoid further conflict with Dadi ji. Arnav wanted to help and offered me to stay here... I should have checked with you or mami ji or even Nani ji..." Khushi started to say but Arnav interrupted her.

"Mama, Khushi needed a place to stay, this was vacant, so I asked her to stay hereā€ he explained, his voice steady. "it's no big deal"

Mama’s eyes narrow slightly as he gauges Arnav’s response. ā€œAnd you thought it would be fine to let her stay here without asking me first?ā€ he continues, his voice carrying a weight of curiosity.

"You were at Lucknow, Mami was healing, so I didn’t want to disturb you at the time"

Mama’s brow furrows slightly, his curiosity piqued once more. ā€œDoes Dadi know about this?ā€ he inquires, his voice steady but probing.

The question catches both Arnav and Khushi off guard.

Arnav shakes his head. ā€œNo, Mama. I didn’t think it was necessary to inform her. She wouldn’t be bothered even. But Nani is aware,ā€ he replies, his tone calm and reassuring.

Mama’s eyes narrow again, seeking confirmation. ā€œAnd is Nani okay with this arrangement?ā€

ā€œYes, Mama,ā€ Arnav nods. ā€œInfact, when I informed Nani, she was the one who actually suggested that Khushi stay at Shantivan to avoid any more conflicts with Dadi.ā€

Mama then asks, "Yet you didn’t think it was appropriate to ask me first?" His voice carries a mixture of curiosity and mild reproach.

Khushi looked worried and concerned, but Arnav rolled his eyes at his Mama.

"Stop joking. You are going to make Khushi cry"

Mama breaks into a warm smile, the initial tension dissipating like morning mist under the sun.

ā€œRelax, I was just pulling your leg,ā€ he chuckles, the humor in his voice lightening the mood instantly. Khushi breathes a sigh of relief, a grin spreading across her face. The heaviness that had settled in her chest lifts, replaced by an overwhelming sense of gratitude.

Mama then shifted his focus to Khushi. "Khushi, could I get some more tea, please?" he requested kindly.

"Of course, Mama," khushi said, hastening to pour more tea.

As she serves, Mama turns to Arnav. "Would you like some as well?" he asks.

ā€œNo Mama I am fineā€

Mama's eyes twinkle with mischief, and he quips, "You know, Arnav doesn’t seem to miss your tea and samosas as much as I do, given how frequently you get to serve him that."

Khushi then chuckles softly and says, "Mama ji, you do know that Arnav doesn't drink chai. He's more of a coffee person."

Mama raises an eyebrow, feigning surprise. "Oh, you are well aware of his preferences already, Khushi," he remarks, a playful glint in his eyes.

Arnav, sensing an opportunity for a cheeky retort, quips, "Well, Mama, you raised me and still you don’t know what I drink? At least someone’s cares."

Mama laughs heartily, his eyes twinkling with affection. "You, cheeky rascal!" he exclaims, shaking his head with a fond smile.

Mama then looks at Arnav with a playful grin. "So, Arnav, are you going to ask for that black coffee you always prefer?"

Arnav shakes his head, "No, Mama, I am fine."

Mama again exclaims, "This chai is too good!" putting his cup down with a satisfied sigh. "Khushi, your tea is always a delight to the taste buds," he adds with genuine appreciation.

Khushi smiles warmly. "I'll make it for you every day now that your clinic is operational," she promises.

Mama's hearty laugh fills the room. "I would love that, Khushi!" He then turned to Arnav with a knowing look. "By the way, I already knew that Khushi was staying at Shantivan. Nani told me everything about what happened between Dadi, Khushi, and Abhi, and the circumstances that led to this decision."

Arnav's expression softened as he looked at Khushi and then his Mama.

"Mama, even if you didn’t know, you would still be fine with it," he said with quiet confidence. "I also know that you know it already, I would be worried if Afsal hasn’t already updated you about thisā€

Mama smiles, "Of course, Afsal has been updating me about this amongst other things." He then glances at Arnav. "Would you like to take a walk to the clinic side?"

Arnav nods affirmatively, "Sure, Mama." They both stood up, bidding goodbye to Khushi.

"We'll be back soon," Arnav assured her with a smile.

As they walk towards the clinic, Mama’s tone turns more serious. "Afsal has also mentioned that you seem to be deeply caring for Khushi," he said, looking sideways at Arnav. "What’s happening between you two?"

Arnav took a deep breath, considering his words carefully. "Mama, Khushi and I… we like each otherā€ Arnav confesses, the sincerity in his voice unmistakable. The words come out effortlessly, carrying the weight of his genuine feelings.

Mama nodded approvingly, his stern demeanor dissolving into one of warmth and acceptance. "She’s a wonderful girl. I am happy for you both Arnav bitwa." His words were filled with affection

As they continue their walk, Arnav looked at Mama with curiosity. "How are things working out? Did Mami agree for adoption" he inquired

Mama let out a deep breath, then added, ā€œAlmost there... I’m trying to convince Mami to consider adoption. She has started to think about itā€

The vulnerability in his voice is touching, a rare glimpse into his inner turmoil.

ā€œMama, have you thought about adopting older children? Sometimes the waiting list for babies can be very long.ā€ Arnav asked.

Mama’s eyes reflected a glimmer of hope as he considered Arnav’s words.

ā€œYou know, Arnav, it does make sense. Mami and I, we aren’t as young as we used to be. Nurturing a newborn would be quite a challenge at our age.ā€ He paused, the weight of his thoughts evident. ā€œBut adopting an older child, a school-going kid... there are pros and cons to that too.ā€

Arnav listened intently as Mama continues, ā€œOn the positive side, older children are more independent.ā€ He smiled faintly, as if picturing the scenario.

ā€œButā€ Mama adds thoughtfully, ā€œmany older children come from traumatic backgrounds. They might have faced neglect, abuse, or loss. The emotional and psychological scars can be deep, and it requires a lot of patience and understanding to help them heal and feel secure. Also, what if acceptance and belonging for older children is a journey in itself. Most of these organizations are very strict about adoption of elder children, specifically girls. It’s a difficult pathā€

Arnav nods, understanding the gravity of Mama’s considerations. ā€œWhat if I know someone who can be a good fit?ā€

Mama’s face lights up.

ā€œAre you saying you know someone who is up for adoption?ā€

Arnav smiled at him.

"I know a bright and loving girl, and I believe she would fit perfectly into our family." The certainty in Arnav’s voice brings a sense of reassurance to Mama.

***

Just as Arnav walks into RM, a figure with short locks of hair pulls him aside.

ā€œAnjali! What was this forā€ Arnav is surprised to see Anjali waiting for him near the entrance.

She glances around nervously before leaning in close. "Arnav, you're in for a surprise. Your ex-girlfriend is here. She's currently talking to the family."

ā€œWhat?ā€

Arnav's brow furrows in confusion, but before he can ask more, Anjali squeezes his arm reassuringly and discreetly points towards the living room.

ā€œSheetalā€

Arnav's mind raced as he tried to process Anjali's revelation. Sheetal here? He hadn't received any message or indication that she would be visiting RM.

ā€œWhat is she doing here?ā€

"Oh it's all Dadi's doing," Anjali whispered urgently.

Arnav's eyes widened in disbelief.

ā€œWhy would Dadi want her here?ā€

ā€œShe's trying to set you up with her, thinking it might lead to marriage. Duh!"

The idea seemed preposterous and entirely out of the blue.

ā€œWhat?! Wait did you tell Dadi anything about me and Khushi?ā€

Anjali shook her head vehemently. "No, bhai, I didn't tell anything about you and Khushi to anyone… definetely not to Dadi"

Arnav's eyes narrowed as he pressed her further, "Then you told some one else?"

"Only to Nani, indirectly though." Anjali confessed softly, her eyes pleading for understanding. "I thought she deserved to know, and she’s trustworthy. She won’t give away your secret to Dadi or anyone before you disclose it."

Arnav sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. ā€œAnjali! This is the last thing I need right now.ā€

He felt a wave of frustration rising within him but suppressed it quickly. He needed to handle this delicately, for both his sake and his family's.

ā€œThanks for the heads up!ā€

ā€œAll the best bhai!ā€

ā€œWhere are you going?ā€

ā€œPool, Payal, NK and La are there. Right now, the living room is full of mush, we better avoid it. You can’t say the same thing thoughā€

***

Arnav spotted Sheetal the moment he came in. With a friendly smile, he approached her and inquired, "Sheetal, what a surprise! How have you been? How is your family?"

Sheetal, returning the smile, replied, "It’s great to see you, Arnav. Everyone is doing well, thank you. Actually, Dadi has been asking me to visit RM for a long time, only today, I could make it."

Just as she finished speaking, Dadi was sitting next to her. "I miss having Sheetal around," she said warmly.

Arnav noticed Nani seated nearby, her eyes firmly fixed on him. It was as if she was trying to silently convey her understanding of the situation. Nani had a way of seeing right through him, and her expression made it clear that she was aware of his growing feelings for Khushi.

Although he hadn't explicitly told her about his relationship with Khushi the previous night, Nani had caught on quickly. Anjali's incessant chatter about the girl had left little room for doubt. Earlier that morning, with some gentle questioning, Nani had confirmed her suspicions through Anjali that Khushi was indeed the one Arnav had been pursuing.

This realization added another layer of complexity to the already tense atmosphere in the room.

Before Arnav could respond, Mami chimed in with her characteristic enthusiasm, "of course hello hi bye bye, why do you need a reason to come here Sheetal Bitiya? You are always belcomes at RMā€

Sheetal, sensing the mounting pressure, decided to steer the conversation towards lighter waters. "Mami ji, it’s nothing like that but my work schedule have been quite packed lately."

She paused for a moment, her eyes meeting Arnav's with an unspoken understanding.

Sensing the weight of the conversation, Dadi leaned forward, addressing Sheetal directly. "Sheetal, you know Arnav has been quite busy lately as well. I imagine you're aware of that since you're the closest to him. And given that you both are getting married soon, it's understandable that you're trying to wrap things up before embarking on this new chapter together."

Arnav felt a surge of awkwardness, his mind racing for the right words to diffuse the situation. Before he could muster a response, Sheetal turned towards him with a confused smile, seemingly bemused by the undercurrent of tension in the room.

Sheetal realized with a start that Arnav hadn't yet revealed to the family that they had broken up. She had assumed he would have told them by now, especially given the way he had ended the things between them. But it was clear that he had kept the news to himself, which surprised her, sparking a tiny bit of hope.

On the other hand, Arnav silently berated himself for not addressing the issue sooner. With all that was happening in the last few weeks, it had skipped his mind that he had not told his dadi & nani yet about the two breaking up. Arnav wanted to tell the family that he and Sheetal had broken up. But not in front of her. He hadn’t expected that he would be in this situation.

Arnav finally decided it was time to address the elephant in the room. Clearing his throat, he looked directly at his Dadi.

"Dadi," he began, his voice calm yet resolute, "I think you are assuming too much in this. We both were simply busy and didn’t have a reason to meet. Moreover, there's something I've been meaning to tell you all—"

But before Arnav could finish, Mami interrupted with her characteristic exuberance,

"Oh nonsense!" Mami interrupted, waving her hand dismissively. "Arnav bitwa, what reason does she need to meet you? You both are engaged, aren’t you?ā€

Arnav felt another wave of awkwardness wash over him. Mami's response, though well-intentioned, only added to the mounting pressure. He glanced at Sheetal, who maintained her composed demeanor, her smile unwavering, but he could sense the underlying tension in her eyes. She was playing along with the narrative for reasons he couldn't fully understand.

Arnav took a deep breath, trying to find the right words to deflect the situation without causing further discomfort.

Before the conversation could escalate further, Nani once again stepped in, her voice calm and reassuring. "Subadra, Arnav had asked us to give him time to sort things out. Let's give them the space they need to figure things out. Rushing them won't help."

Dadi sighed, her expression softening as she nodded reluctantly. "Alright, Devyani. But I hope they don't take too long to give us the good news..."

Arnav felt a small sense of relief as the tension in the room eased slightly. He glanced at Nani, grateful for her support, and then turned his attention back to Sheetal. There was so much they needed to discuss, so many truths that needed to be laid bare. And he knew that the time for those conversations was drawing near.

But Mami wasn’t someone to let it slide easily.

ā€œEverything aside Arnav bitwa you should spend more time together! Take her on a nice date, bowl her over. Your work can wait; your happiness cannot. Am I right Sheetal Bitiya?"

"Yes, Mami ji, don't worry, we will find some time soon." Sheetal spoke with a light-heartedness that momentarily perplexed Arnav.

Arnav was taken aback by Sheetal’s response. Confusion flickered in his eyes as he recalled their amicable breakup. He hadn’t told the elders about it because Sheetal had been concerned about her family's reaction. But here, in his own house, among his family, she didn’t have to keep up the faƧade, did she?

The atmosphere grew thicker with unspoken words and hidden truths. Arnav glanced at Nani, whose eyes seemed to question him silently, as if probing for answers to the complexities that surrounded them.

Dadi then looked directly at Sheetal, her tone softening yet firm with a hint of reproach. "Sheetal, you know Arnav was very upset when you announced your engagement during Akash’s marriage celebrations. He felt that I shouldn’t have announced it, and it was yours and Arnav’s decision to make, so I didn’t interfere further. But now you both are taking things so slow. It's high time you both discuss the impending marriage between you."

Sheetal's face reflected a mixture of emotions—surprise, guilt, and determination. She glanced at Arnav, who remained silent, his expression unreadable. The weight of Dadi's words hung heavily in the air, and it was clear that the moment of truth was fast approaching for everyone involved.

Sheetal took a deep breath and faced Dadi, her voice steady but with a touch of hesitance. "Dadi, I understand your concern, and I appreciate your support. Arnav and I have been discussing our future, and we will make sure to talk about the necessary arrangements soon."

Arnav's frustration grew as he listened to Sheetal's response. He couldn't comprehend why she continued to play along with the charade. His emotions churned within him, but he knew that voicing them now would only complicate matters further. He clenched his jaw, forcing himself to remain calm despite the turmoil inside.

Nani, perceptive as ever, noticed the subtle tension in Arnav's demeanor. She gave him a reassuring look, silently conveying that she understood his predicament. Meanwhile, Dadi's expression softened slightly, but she still seemed intent on pushing the matter further.

Nani, sensing the growing tension and understanding the delicate nature of the situation, decided to intervene subtly and help Arnav. She turned to Dadi with a gentle smile and said, "Subadra, these days, young people need a bit of space to figure things out on their own. Times have changed. Lets give them some spaceā€

Dadi looked at Nani, her brows slightly furrowing, as if weighing her words. "I understand, Devyani, but they have been taking too long already. At this rate, it seems uncertain when they will finally decide."

"Dadi, there's no reason for us to rush into a decision," Arnav said with a firm yet calm voice. "And Sheetal is being very polite, but—" Arnav said, determined to clarify the situation, but just as he drew breath, Dadi's voice rang out again.

"Arnav, I do hope you understand the gravity of this matter. It's not just about the two of you; it's about our family's honor and tradition. And choosing Sheetal as the eldest bahu for the family is the best decision that you have ever made, It makes me so happy" she said holding Sheetal’s hand lovingly.

Sheetal took the opportunity to interject, her voice calm yet insistent. "Dadi, you are so kindā€¦ā€

Dadi’s expression then turned slightly more serious as she added, "So promise me that you will give us a wedding date soon."

ā€œI promise we will have a conversation soon.."

"Sheetal, what are you talking about?ā€ Arnav cut through her conversation. ā€œActually, Dadi, there's something I need to—"

But before he could finish, Mami chimed in enthusiastically, "Arnav bitwa, don’t scold her, it’s always work work work for you. But we are all waiting for your wedding celebrations to commence…Arnav’s wedding will be the wedding of the century, it will be no less to the Ambanis wedding celebrationsā€

The room erupted into a chorus of agreement and excitement, effectively drowning out any further attempts Arnav might make to speak

Arnav's gaze shifted to Sheetal, searching for any sign that she might be ready to end the pretense. Instead, she stood firm, maintaining the faƧade for reasons he couldn't fathom. The room fell into an uneasy silence, each member of the family lost in their thoughts and unspoken words.

Arnav took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the moment pressing heavily upon him. He knew he could no longer prolong the inevitable. ā€œI’m sorry to break this bubble,ā€ he began, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside him, ā€œbut there will be no wedding between me and Sheetal.ā€

The words hung in the air, creating a sudden stillness in the room. Shocked faces turned towards him, and a gasp of disbelief escaped from more than one set of lips. Dadi's eyes narrowed slightly, a mix of surprise and disapproval apparent on her face.

"I knew it," Dadi said, her voice tinged with a hint of resignation. "I always feared you were more inclined towards Western culture, Arnav. But you cannot just live together with Sheetal. It is not something that I will accept."

Arnav shook his head, his expression resolute. "Dadi, it's not about Western culture or living together. It's about being honest about our feelings. Sheetal and I – we don’t want thisā€

Dadi's face flushed with anger. "Arnav, do you think this is a game? You cannot just dismiss such important matters so lightly. Sheetal may be kind enough to accept your views, but this family has traditions and values that cannot be ignored."

Arnav exhaled slowly, collecting his thoughts. "Dadi, you don’t understand, we both don’t want this at allā€

Arnav was speaking about him and Sheetal not wanting to pursue the relationship but Dadi seemed to not let him explain himself.

ā€œYou don’t say anythingā€ Dadi told Arnav ā€œSheetal, I trust you will be able to turn him aroundā€

Sheetal took a deep breath, stepping in to defuse the rising tension. "Dadi, I understand your concerns and traditions. Arnav and I respect them deeply. I will talk to Arnav and try to make him see things from our perspective."

Dadi's stern expression softened slightly, though the disapproval in her eyes remained. "I hope you can, Sheetal. This family has always upheld its values, and I expect nothing less from the eldest Bahu of this family."

Sheetal nodded, then turned to Arnav with a gentle smile. "Arnav, could you walk me to the car? I think we need a moment to talk."

Arnav glared at Sheetal, his mind whirling with suspicion. What was she playing at? He had sensed a change in her demeanor, a hint of something unspoken that made him wary. Was she truly trying to mediate, or did she have her own motives?

Arnav nodded, masking his inner turmoil with a composed exterior.

"Sureā€, he said gritting his teeth.

Arnav turned towards the door, signaling their departure. Sheetal followed him closely, winding her hands into his arm in a gesture meant to display unity. Arnav, however, subtly but firmly took her hand off, his mind still clouded with doubts and suspicions. The family watched the couple walk out, their expressions a mix of curiosity and concern.

***

Meanwhile, by the pool, Anjali was sitting with Payal, NK, and La. They faced the main patio and observed Sheetal and Arnav walking out together. Payal's eyebrows shot up in surprise.

"That must be the shortest trip to RM for Sheetal," Payal exclaimed.

Anjali tilted her head, curiosity piqued. "I wonder what must have transpired," she mused aloud. She watched as the pair engaged in what seemed to be a heated discussion. "Do you think they are fighting?"

NK shrugged nonchalantly. "They could just be having a normal conversation," he said, attempting to downplay the situation.

Anjali, not entirely convinced, turned to Payal. "Would you like to walk with me towards the other side? We might catch what’s going on," she suggested.

NK frowned, shaking his head. "That's not a nice thing to do. We should give them their privacy."

Anjali laughed and teased, "NK, you're becoming more like Arnav and Akki. I need at least one of my brothers to stay crazy and unpredictable and be my partner in crime, this is not fun. Please don't change."

Payal noticed NK's unease and gently asked, "Is everything alright, NK? You seem distant."

NK sighed. "I'm fine,"

ā€œbut you've been so quiet ever since you came home," she observed, concern evident in her voice.

NK exchanged a glance with La, who bit her lips slightly, concern evident in her eyes.

"It's nothing serious," NK assured her with a faint smile, trying to alleviate her worries.

La, sensing the need for further explanation, added, "Maybe all the recent events have just been a lot to handle. It's understandable to feel a bit overwhelmed."

NK nodded, then took a deep breath. "Actually, I've been worried about Anjali's recovery," he said lightly.

Anjali, touched by his concern, exclaimed, "My dear brother loves me so much!"

Just then, NK's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and quickly threw a glance at La.

La realized it must be the DNA results. Her heart raced as she observed NK's reaction. He paled slightly but maintained his composure. NK excused himself with a quick, "I need to check this message. It's from the university about some class assignments."

Anjali's eyes widened with a playful glint as she exclaimed, "NK, why are you suddenly so serious? This isn't like you at all!"

NK chuckled softly, shaking his head. "I'm always serious about studies, you just never notice."

Anjali teased, "Or maybe you're worried because you've been bunking a few subjects?"

NK chuckled and replied, "Don't worry about me. I'm a topper in my class."

"Do you want to come with me, La?" NK asked suddenly, breaking the brief silence.

La, taken aback, jumped up and replied, "Yes."

She followed NK out of the room with a look of determination.

Payal, watching them leave, couldn't help but wonder if NK was hiding something. There was an edge to his demeanor that she hadn't seen before.

As Arnav and Sheetal made their way to the car, the silence between them was heavy with unspoken words. Arnav could sense the tension in Sheetal's posture, her earlier confidence now replaced with uncertainty. When they reached the car, he opened the door for her, then paused before speaking.

"Sheetal, what's going on?" he asked quietly, searching her eyes for answers. "Are you really trying to convince Dadi or is there something else you're not telling me? Why are you acting that we are still together?"

Sheetal took a deep breath, steadying herself. "Arnav, I could ask you the same question. You've not told your family about our breakup and how am I to answer their questions? Have you told me what I should be telling your family?ā€

Arnav sighed, his defenses crumbling under the weight of Sheetal's words. "I haven't told them yet.ā€ He admitted. ā€œBut, today, I was trying to find the right moment to say something, but then you gave them hope that we would be discussing our future together. I don’t understand."

Sheetal's expression softened as she listened, understanding the turmoil that Arnav was going through. "I didn't mean to make things harder for you. I thought you may have a reason to not tell themā€

"There was no particular reason," Arnav confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "Things have been crazy in the last few weeks. Work, family issues, and everything else. I just didn’t get the time to tell them about us."

Sheetal nodded, her eyes filled with a mixture of empathy and understanding.

"I get it Arnie…" Sheetal said softly, her voice tinged with a hint of resignation. "I haven't told my family either. Given that we've been family friends for so long, the expectations are high. It's not easy to break their happiness.ā€

Arnav sighed deeply, running a hand through his hair. "I know. I'll tell them soon, I think, may be today"

Sheetal sighed, her tone contemplative. "Maybe it's for the best that they don't know. If one of us tells our family, the other family will inevitably find out too. Sometimes, I wonder if it would be wrong for us to give each other another chance. Maybe we owe it to them—and to ourselves—to see if there's still something between us."

Arnav's expression darkened. "Please, Sheetal, don't make this any harder for me."

She laughed lightly, trying to ease the tension. "What's the hurry? It's not like either of us has jumped into another relationship."

But then she looked at Arnav more closely, a thought forming in her mind. "You haven't moved on already, have you?"

He glanced away, his silence answering for him.

"You're seeing someone, aren't you?" she asked, her voice a mix of curiosity and apprehension.

ā€œWho is it?ā€

Arnav took a deep breath, deciding it was time to be honest. "Khushi."

Sheetal's eyes widened in surprise. "Khushi? I didn't think she was the type for surface-level relationships."

Arnav took a deep breath, his voice steady but filled with conviction. ā€œKhushi isn't someone who would get into a relationship without commitment."

Sheetal composed herself, her eyes locking onto Arnav's with a mixture of determination and sorrow.

"You know, Arnav, you broke up with me because you were never into commitments. You always wanted your freedom, your space."

Arnav felt a pang of guilt but didn't look away. "I know. But people change. Circumstances change...ā€

ā€œSo you are saying that you are in a serious relationship with Khushi?ā€

Arnav nodded

ā€œHow long do you know her?ā€ Sheetal asked, ā€œ6 months?ā€

ā€œ9 monthsā€

Sheetal raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued. "And you? Are you really ready for that kind of commitment now?"

Arnav took a deep breath, a newfound resolve in his eyes. "Maybe this time, I don't mind being committed in a relationship. Maybe I've realized what truly matters."

Sheetal searched his eyes, trying to decipher the depth of his words. "And you think you have that with Khushi?"

He nodded, his gaze unwavering. "Yes, I do. Khushi isn't just someone to pass the time with. She means a lot more to me. This isn't a decision I've made lightly."

Sheetal's expression softened, a mixture of understanding and sadness. "I see.ā€ she whispered. ā€œGod! this is painfulā€

Arnav's eyes softened as he looked at Sheetal, knowing that she might still harbor feelings for him. He exhaled deeply, the weight of the moment pressing down on him.

"Sheetal, I never wanted to hurt you. You were important to me, and a part of me will always care for you. But what I feel for Khushi is different. It's profound and undeniable."

Sheetal's eyes glistened with unshed tears, but she managed a brave smile. "I understand, Arnav. It's just...hard to accept sometimes."

A lump formed in Sheetal's throat as she battled with her emotions. She had thought she was over Arnav, that time had healed her wounds, but seeing him now, speaking with such passion about Khushi, made everything resurface. His words were like daggers, cutting through the remnants of her hope. She had once imagined this future with him, a future filled with the same commitment he now promised someone else.

Her heart ached with the realization that Arnav had truly moved on, that he had found someone who stirred his soul in ways she never could. The pain was almost unbearable, but amidst the sorrow, she found a sliver of solace. Perhaps, seeing him happy would help her let go of her lingering feelings.

Sheetal took a deep breath and steadied herself. "Can I ask you something, Arnav?"

Arnav nodded, his eyes reflecting a mixture of curiosity and patience. "Of course, Sheetal."

She hesitated for a moment, searching for the right words. "What did you see in Khushi that made you change your principles? What about her made you want to commit?"

Arnav's expression softened as he thought about Khushi. He paused, his eyes distant for a moment as he reflected on his journey.

He wanted to tell her that Khushi has this incredible ability to see the good in people, even when they can't see it in themselves. She is kind, selfless, and has a strength that he deeply admires. She is sassy but kind. She is so independent yet so binding, she is selfless and thoughtful. She has a strength to do what is right and she has this charm that makes it so difficult for anyone to say no to her. Khushi makes him want to be a better person. She challenges him, stands by him, and loves him unconditionally and he can keep going about what Khushi means to him, About why he needs by his side for a lifetime and beyond.

But then he looked at Sheetal. What Khushi means to him was only between them. It was not for everyone’s ears.

"I don’t know… I cannot pinpoint just one thing, Sheetal. It's everything about her.ā€

Sheetal looked intently at him, her heart heavy. The emotions that ran through his face in that short time she had asked him that question was enough to understand that Arnav was in love.

"I always wanted the best for you, Arnav. Perhaps it's time for us both to move on and find our own paths."

"Thank you, Sheetal. Your support means a lot to me. And I hope you find your happiness too."

ā€œCan I get one last hug?ā€ Sheetal asked him with a bittersweet smile

Arnav's heart ached at the request, knowing it symbolized the end of an era.

"Of course," he said, his voice gentle as he opened his arms as he stepped forward and enveloped Sheetal in a warm, comforting embrace.

Just then, Anjali’s eyes widened as she glanced towards the patio and exclaimed, "Arnav and Sheetal are hugging each other!"

Payal noticed that while Sheetal was in Arnav's arms, she seemed genuinely sad, her earlier confidence nowhere to be seen.

Payal turned to Anjali and said thoughtfully, "Perhaps this is the final closure to Arnav and Sheetal's relationship. It's sad, though. Sheetal is very wise but sadly couldn’t find a place in the Raizada siblings' hearts."

Anjali nodded, then reminded her, "Whether she found a place in our hearts or not does not matter. Arnav had feelings for Khushi that he had for nobody else."

Payal agreed with her, "Of course Anji, But I was saying she somehow didn’t even register as a friend to usā€

ā€œI don’t know, I cannot accept someone that Dadi likes so much!ā€

Payal chuckled, "You know, if we keep talking about Sheetal, Dadi might just appear out of nowhere to defend her honor."

Anjali laughed, "And we would get another lecture on how great Sheetal is and how we should all aspire to be like her!"

Payal turned her head to look at the two embracing each other.

ā€œBut Akki told me that Sheetal went out of her way to secure finance for our projects. She really helped Arnav despite them breaking up"

ā€œReally?ā€ Anjali asked and then quickly added ā€œMay be she still has feelings for Bhaiā€

ā€œI would bet on that. It looks lot sadder on her part than on Arnavā€ Payal said looking at Arnav finally opening the car door for Sheetal and Sheetal getting in.

ā€œArnav looks relievedā€ Anjali added.

Anjali then laughed, trying to lighten the mood, "Why are we all getting so emotional and boring today? This isn't like us at all."

Payal smiled, "Are you up for talking about something fun? Have you seen the latest trailer for the new historical show, Subadra ki Arjuna?"

Anjali's eyes lit up, "I have! And I was pleasantly surprised to see Suraj playing Arjuna."

Payal's excitement was palpable. "You actually noticed him, Anjali?"

Anjali grinned, "How could I not? This role suits him so much better than the previous one he did."

Payal's curiosity piqued, "But how come you watched this trailer without my prompting? Usually, I have to drag you to these things.ā€

Oblivious to Payal's probing, Anjali shrugged, "I was just bored and have been binge-watching everything since I'm on a break from college due to my recovery."

Payal nodded, a sly smile forming on her lips, "Well, I'm glad you're catching up on all the good stuff. Maybe we can watch it together when it airs."

Anjali clapped her hands together, "Absolutely! How can I not support a friend? Every time Suraj talks to me, he's always going on about his acting projects. It would actually be useful to watch so I can keep up with our conversations."

Payal grinned mischievously, "Oh, so it's all for the sake of conversation, huh? Not because you have a soft spot for Suraj?"

Anjali rolled her eyes, still oblivious to the teasing, "Exactly. It's just practical. Plus, he's really passionate about his roles. It makes sense to be informed. May be give him some good advice"

Payal chuckled, "Oh, I see how it is. So, you're keeping tabs on him now, huh? Don't tell me you're planning to be his personal critic!"

Anjali laughed, still unaware of the teasing tone, "Well, someone has to give him honest feedback, right? Plus, it's fun to see him in these roles; it gives us more to talk about."

"Alright, Ms. Future Film Critic, let's make a pact to watch Subadra ki Arjuna together. We will watch it together."

Anjali beamed, "Deal! I can't wait."

***

Arnav's mind raced as he walked inside. He knew that his past with Sheetal was just that—past. They had amicably broken up, and Sheetal had assured him she needed time to inform her family.

Arnav had maintained his silence on the matter, respecting Sheetal’s request and knowing that the truth would eventually surface. He maintained his calm demeanor all these days, hoping that the situation would resolve itself without further complications.

But what happened today strengthened his suspicion that Dadi might be aware of his relationship with Khushi and was bringing Sheetal back into his life to steer him away from Khushi. He knew what his Dadi was trying to do, however, he had remained composed earlier, deciding not to challenge Dadi's intentions during that time.

But now he knew it was time, not only did the family put him and Sheetal in an awkward situation, he owed this to Khushi too. She was also worried about the fact the family still thought that he was with Sheetal. He felt a strong urge to finally address the matter. Arnav also realized that revealing his relationship with Khushi in one go could lead to his family lashing out at her. He needed to approach it gradually.

Arnav entered the living room where the family elders were still seated. His Mama had also joined the elders. He took a deep breath, steeling himself against the forthcoming confrontation.

As he approached the center of the room, Arnav's gaze swept over the familiar faces of his family members. His heartbeat quickened, but he maintained his composure. He knew the gravity of the situation demanded clarity and resolve.

"I need to talk to all of you!" Arnav started, his voice steady but firm
