What made Ravichandran Ashwin retire in the middle of the ongoing Australian series?

Ashwin, Brisbane Test

India's premier off-spinner R Ashwin on Wednesday surprised the cricketing world by announcing his retirement with immediate effect in the middle of the Test series against Australia. (PTI)

Ravichandran Ashwin spent compiling 537 Test wickets, 37 five-fors, 11 Man of the Series performances, six Test centuries and 14 fifties, he came across as someone hard to decode. One never knew what he was going to come up with. He was a batsman, who went on to become an all-time great spinner. However, the timing of his retirement was a curveball.

His family had seen it coming, but they too were surprised that it came in the middle of a series. His friends at Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street whom he thanked — for bowling endlessly and giving priceless memories were wondering what was going on until they saw him address the press conference!

What is your opinion on this yet to be decoded decision?? Surprised? Or is it to be viewed as a significant loss for the Indian team?

Within the team, except for skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir, the decision came as a shock for the rest. Virat Kohli’s hug, which was played repeatedly by the broadcasters, seemed every bit spontaneous as he, along with the rest of them, got to know only at the end of the Brisbane Test.

Is it a spontaneous decision, or a well planned one? Is it because of hurt for not included him in playing 11 in the 3rd test, for any other reason??

Everybody has to retire one day. So, the following questions always pop up.

Why now?, Why not later?, Why not now?. Why later?

It is up to the player to make the decision. Ash made the decision and retired. All the very best to him.

I still feel, had India won the Adelaide match, Ash would have retired in Adelaide itself.

The way India played in Adelaide and Brisbane, the chances of them winning again are looking grim so Ash retired at the end of a drawn match. So be it.

Cheers..
