Misha came in house, her clothes oiled and dirty and shouted, “Dad, Can you drop me to Manju Mechanic?”
“Issh Misha, Stop shouting and oh my god. Move. Move yourself away from my carpet now. Look at yourself. You are so dirty.”, Madhu asked servant to bring a towel and started rubbing on her daughter.
“Mumma. Not so hard. Dab it softly. Softly.”
“Mishu beta, what were you doing that got you so dirty?”, Madhu asked again.
“My bike was not starting. There was something in engine and I was cleaning it.”, Misha explained.
“And did you use your tshirt to clean?”, Panchi asked.
“HA HA. Very funny. Anyway Dad, my bike needs oil change. I will buy from Manju mechanic. Can you just drop me there?”
“Are beta I will call the towing vehicle. He will tow your bike and let Manju change oil and clean engine also. Why are you bothering?”
“Noo. I am not going to let anyone touch my bike. That idiot will damage something. I will change it myself. You know how much I love to take care of my bike.”
“Haan and after that who will take care of my garden and house? You will roam around entire house with those soiled clothes and legs. Arnab, you go and get that Manju mechanic or whoever to come here and repair her bike.”
“Are mumma let me fix my bike on my own.”
“Chup. No need to take things in your hands.”
“Mumma if my bike stopped working, I will steal money from your card only to buy new one.”
“Acha fine but at least first go and change your clothes." After Misha left to her room Madhu continues, "I don’t know what to do about this girl, Arnab?”
“Well don’t you worry about her, she can atleast be useful when it comes to her things unlike that son-in-law of ours. I thought his habits of staying up at night and nose will be of some use. Trusting him, I uninstalled all the CCTVs also to save money. But when the time came his nose stopped working and those thieves had good time stealing from our house.”, Arnab commented pointing to Abhay who was sitting in lawn cuddling and chatting Piya. “I don’t know what Piya sees in him.”
“Are why are you always complaining about my damad. He might have gotten cold or something.”
“Haan permanent case of cold. That very night those thieves dropped Misha’s bike and now its not working. Don’t you see, its all his fault.”
Abhay and Piya entered the house.
“Good morning momsy. I am very hungry. What's in the menu?”, Abhay said.
“Haan haan betaji, come. We have an assortment of fresh blood today. There is blood donation camp organized in my office. Why don’t you come and take your pick?”, Arnab said sarcastically. Madhu tapped Arnab on his shoulder.
“That does sound tasty pops, but I am on diet these days. No human blood for me. Too much trans fat. I blame all the junk food that people keep eating.”, Abhay joked and winked at Piya who was chuckling.
Arnab looked at Madhu with big eyes and flared nose.“Did you listen to him? Is this a matter to laugh about?”
“No no absolutely not pops. This is very serious indeed. Do you know our kind is dying because of starvation and malnutrition. I agree with you one hundred percent.”, he said faking sincerity and then pulled his tongue out looking at Piya who was having trouble controlling her laugh.
“Madhu, I swear this guy-“
“Good morning familia. How is everyone doing this morning?”, Neel announced as he arrived.
"Here comes another good for nothing damad of yours.", Arnab said flicking his hand over his forehead. Madhu shook her head. "Oho Arnab. Good morning Neel, beta."
"You are looking awfully cheerful. What's the matter?", Abhay asked.
Neel pulled out a newspaper from behind his back and opened it in extremely dramatic way and read from it."Police have confirmed that the blood is being stolen from Dehradoon hospital blood bank. The incident was first reported two weeks ago and police have been investigating in secrecy owing to the history of vampire attacks inthe city. The CCTV footages have not revealed the face. However, given the frequency and patterns of attack they have confirmed it must be another vampire getting active. But we assure you that the citizens’ safety will be our top priority. They did not divulge more but from the sources we have gathered, police have a CI in vampire community to aid in their search. Whether this CI can be trusted or not is another question all together.”
Neel stopped reading and looked up for everyone’s reaction. Abhay twisted his mouth.
“I thought you were on diet?”, Arnab asked.
“Pops come on. It's not me. It has to be someone else.”
“Yes papa. Abhay could never steal. I am sure.”
“Well on this I must agree. You see, stealing takes guts which this vampire here lacks. But the real question is will police believe it?”
“Abhay? Are you telling truth?”
"Pops, come on. You have to trust me.”
Arnab shook his head and said, “Madhu! Get me some tea.”
“Arnab you have to get to hospital first. No tea until you get your morning injection.”
“Injection? What happened papa?”, Piya asked.
Arnab’s face had gone white remembering the pain, his hand instinctively went over to his hips inprotective manner. So, Madhu answered for him, “Are beta, that.. you remember few weeks ago thieves came. Well, Arnab tried to catch them and he went running after them. He didn’t catch them but when he got back he had their smell all over him and poor Neel in his wolf form mistook Arnab for the thief.”
“Dad was running in the yard holding his slippers in hand while Neel chased him.”, Misha filled in. She fell laughing in sofa.
“Oh my god. Neel, you bit papa?”,Piya asked.
“Well dad did manage to climb on the tree but branch fell and well, now he has to take injections.”
“Huh- at least I never bit anyone in this family.”, Abhay said with a smirk.
“It’s your fault that those thieves were able to break in in the first place.”
“Oh please. Unlike you I am not practiced at barking mad on seeing strangers.”
“Or having a nose that works?”
Abhay and Neel glared at each other.
“But how did branch fall so easily?”, Piya asked.
Misha gulped and quickly said, “I think we should go quickly. Otherwise, that Manju mechanic will get busy and will not repair my bike.”
“Yeah and others won’t find that it was all your doing that that stupid branch fell down.”
“Birdie, you –“
“Mishaaa”, Madhu glared at her and Misha rubbed her cheeks in fear as if Madhu had just slapped her. “What did you do?”, Madhu asked her.
Misha opened her mouth to say something but no sound came out.
“I will tell you mom. This stupid girl and Abhay had bet.”
“Ay why are you getting me into trouble.”
Oh don’t worry Abhay. I am well aware of what you two had cooked up. Anyway mom, these two knuckleheads here thought to test if Abhay was getting rusty with his powers or not and so Misha had cut that branch in morning trying to get it to fall on Piya while Abhay would not be near her.”
“WHAT? ARE YOU TWO MAD? WHAT IF IT HURT ME?”, Piya snapped.
“Piya beta, if you have forgotten, it did hurt your poor, Dad.” Arnab said pointing his hands to himself.
“Right. Sorry dad. But Abhay how dare you risk me? Or dad?”, she added quickly.
“Piya but you are missing. I would have saved you.”, Abhay said in defence.
“Like you saved dad?”
“That is on Neel. I had reached in time to break his fall. Neel bit him after he got on ground safely.”
“None of this would have happened if your nose worked.”
“Everyone knows my nose doesn’t work. Don’t get worked up over it.”
“Neither does anything else. Honestly Piya how do you tolerate him?”
"Just like Birdie tolerates you.”, Piya replied.
Arnab pinched his nose and Madhu asked him to be patient.
“What patience. People at my age dream to spend their senior years playing with their grandchildren. Here I am dousing fires of scandals. I have one son-in-law who bites my tuchus, and another who drinks my blood.”
“Papa, when has Abhay ever drunk your blood?”, Piya defended.
“Beta, your husband drinks my blood every morning with his new antics. If not real surely metaphorical.” Abhay just shrugged in response.
The doorbell rang, “Mr Raichand. We need you to come to police station with us.”, police announced from the door.
“And here comes the police. Piya I am thinking I should get an AC room at police station.”, Abhay said with an eyeroll.
“This is no joke Mr Raichand. We have reports of blood being stolen from hospital blood bank and knowing your reality we must take you into custody.”
“Inspector do you have any evidence against Abhay?”, Madhu asked.
“Well, CCTV footages are not helpful. Its all just a blur of figure.”
“Wait a minute. So you think a vampire has been stealing from hospital blood bank and your plan is to arrest another vampire for it? What are you gonna do? Give him more of your blood?”, Misha said, high-fiving Abhay.
“Naah. I’d rather drink this dog’s blood here.", Abhay said jerking his head in Neel's direction. "And officer, in case you gave forgotten, last time, you arrested me, your inspector ended up dropping me home in his personal car, offering his neck for you know what. That’s why my blood cholesterol shot up. All those kachori samosa they eat.” Abhay joked.
“We know our limitations Mr Raichand. That’s why we have acquired new prison with silver bars especially for your kind.”
“Ohhh?! I am intrigued to try it out.”
“Are oh. What try it out? And you-”, he looked at police and said, “first go and find some evidence. My son in law is not coming with you. Any statement you want to take you can take in presence of my lawyer after you have gotten a warrent. Now out of my house.” He closed the door on their face. Then he came to Abhay and said, “What is the matter with you? Either go to a therapist or I will have to one day.”
“Ok Calm down. Don’t get hyped up. Now you kids stay here am going to take your father to hospital for his injection. Arnab chalo.”
*
After Madhu and Arnab left, everyone was sitting in living room. Neel was sleeping on carpet.
“But I am curious who is stealing all that blood? Abhay do you know if someone from your kind is active or something?”, Panchi asked.
“No that I know of. I checked with mom dad too but nothing so far. Everyone is in Kasol. I am pretty sure this police are following another bad lead.”
“Honestly they are so incompetent that I won’t be surprised.”
Piya was in deep thoughts. “What are you thinking so hard Piya?”
“Didn’t dad mention there is a blood camp in his office today?”
“Yeah so?”
“So, if there is indeed someone stealing blood, I would expect them to try and go there too.”
“You do have a point.”, Abhay said.
“Let’s go check it out then.”, Piya said getting up and pulling Abhay’s hand.
“I will wake Neel”, Panchi said agreeing.
“On the way, we will also get some oil for my bike.”
*
Abhay and Neel were in the van that had all the collected blood bags and number of police vehicles were chasing them.
“Wait wait where is that oil Mishabought?”
“Uhh its in car with girls, I think.”
“I will go and get it.”, Abhayran out the moving van and came back with the oil before Neel reached the next turn. Abhay spilled it all on the road as two police bikes came behind them. Both the riders lost their balance and fell sideways. The cars following them couldn’t stop in time and crashed in the bikes. Abhay and Neel stopped on road above the accident and observed entire scene unfold.
“Uh oh”
They just realised there was a private minibus coming and entire road was covered in oil and thick smoke.
“Why isn’t it slowing down?”, Abhay asked with panic.
“Shit we need to do something before everyone in that bus dies.”
“You think? Run fast.”
Neel shape shifted into his wolf form and Abhay ran as fast as he could and with all their strength combined they stopped the bus.
“Idiot, can’t you see on the road? Why weren’t you stopping?”
The driver’s face had gone yellow and bolted out the van. Realising something was off, Abhay got inside the van while Neel pursued the driver. Some of the policemen had recovered from their fall and were also heading towards the van.
*
It was dinner time and everyone was gathered in dining room. Three tables were sat, curries and rotis for humans, fresh raw meat for werewolves and blood bags for vampires. Abhay and Neel were retelling the entire event.
“So what did it turn out to be?”, Chand asked.
“It was the ward boy. He was selling all that blood on black market.”
“And the CCTV footage blur?”
“Turns out their CCTV footage was taken from our house, this house only. You remember that supposedly theft that happened three weeks ago, apparently those guys came and stole the old footages of me sneaking in and out of Piya's room.”, Abhay explained.
“Oh dear god. What did Dehradun Police say?”
"They couldn't identify that Piya's room did not look anything like hospital?"
“Incompetent I tell you. Anyway Inspector was apologising. As usual. He gave all these stolen bags as compensation to buy our silence. It’s not same as real thing but I am not saying no to free meals.”
“I am just glad this is over. I am thinking of running for city council election this year. I can’t afford anymore scandal. Everyone understand?”, Arnab said staring down to all the children.
“Aah Mr Dobriyal I think that would be unachievable. We have honestly given up on having scandal free life eversince Abhay was made. Wherever we go, scandals seem to follow us. Though if you want I can get you to win much easily. If you get my meaning.”
“I appreciate your help Mr Raichand but I was really hoping to win on merit-“
There was doorbell again. It was Kabeer.
“Are Kabeer. When did you arrive? Come have dinner.”
“Just one hour ago mummy. Yeah I will come soon. Ay Mish, sun na-”, he called to Misha and both went out.
After a while when they both came back Misha asked, “Hey Abhay, do you think that inspector of your will do us another favour?”
Arnab looked at them both and then at Mr Raichand and said, “On second thoughts Mr Raichand, I would love your help.” Mr Raichand raised his glass with a smug look as his eyes brightened blue.
