Breaking the weekly ritual of having the anchors (Sangeeta and Shabbir) perform the inaugural nach, our sultry judge Malaika Arora Khan performed for a packed audience. Clad in a glitzy-golden outfit, she danced to the popular number chamma chamma from China Gate.
An excellent performance with a first-rate choreography from none other than the ace choreographer, Saroj Khan. Sure enough, the performance ended with a huge round of applause and well… what about the judges' comments?
Look who's talking?
The panel of judges included the hilarious trio - Shilpa Saklani, Parmeet Sethi and Varun Badola who did a good job of imitating Malaika, Farhan and Saroj Khan respectively. The entire act was humorous. Shilpa spoke about the costumes and colour co-ordination, not forgetting Malaika's trade mark comment, "Aap ka performance thanda nahin garam tha. Hope to see you in the next round!" Malaika was quick to retaliate "Shilpa hope to see you in the next round."
Parmeet took charge of the emulating Farhan. "Good, very good performance" also sprinkling a personnel touch, he added, "ap ka performance, MP aur UP tak hi kyun seemit tha, why not Sri Lanka?"
Playing the role of a contestant, Malaika came up with some typical excuses like, "During the rehearsals everything went fine. But this morning I sprained my neck, broke my tooth. But next time I will be back with a bang."
If this was not enough for some rib tickling humor, we had Varun playing the role of Saroj Khan. Posing with his hand on the chin he said, "Sab kuch to inhone keh diya, magar bahut achcha nachi Very good. But I would like to speak to your choreographer." For this, we had Saroj Khan walk up to the stage and Varun went on to say, "Gana achcha tha magar Indian sensex ki tarha upar-niche nahin tha. Itne bhari steps kyun diye?
While all the mix up was in process, Farhan was tied up to a chair in the green room surrounded by Manish, Rajiv and Supriya, persuading him for 10/10 and trying to fetch some marks by offering sweets and goodies.
After all that hungama, the Jodis were back on stage and the judges to their seat!
Poonam and Manish:
The first performance of the day was by last week's top scorers - Poonam and Manish. Performing to the Rajashthani folk dholna, they incorporated moves that brought the entire stage alive. Clad in glittering outfits, playing dandiya with high energy, they managed a fine performance. Even the judges seemed to be enjoying their performance as they cheered and applauded for them.
Judges' Comments:
Malaika Arora Khan: I hold this song close to my heart since it was my first performance with Arbaaz after our marriage. Anyway coming back to your performance, it had this whole romantic feel to it. You have done justice to this song. Performing for a folk dance is difficult. But you have managed to recreate the Rajasthani feel. One more thing is that, finally you have got the timing. You started as average performers but have made a mark improvement. Your hard work reflects in your work.
Farhan Akhtar: Brilliant costume. Good conceptualization. Over all, very good performance. I remember the first episode where you looked nervous. But now you look calm. That's a good sign. You have continued without being phased. The only flip side in your performance was that when the prop fell, there was some uneasiness. Otherwise it was a good performance.
Saroj Khan: the Twirling step by Poonam was brilliant. Even Sridevi couldn't do it. I had to ask a dummy to do it. But you managed it so well. Manish you look good in this outfit. Teeno mein bees lakh kaise batenge?
Judges' Scores:
Malaika Arora Khan: 9
Farhan Akhtar: 8
Saroj Khan: 10
Total score: 27/30
Delnaaz and Rajiv:
Next on stage, Rajiv and Delnaaz, the Jodi that has been in the danger zone constantly for two times! The low score seemed to be taking its toll on the couple, as they looked anxious while they performed. Nevertheless, with rosy cheeks like that of Delnaaz and Rajiv's dimpled cheeks, it only seems correct to choose the song bhumbroo, the song based on Kashmiri folk.
Judges Comments:
Malaika Arora Khan: Rajiv you look smashing in this outfit, but at the same time there is a look of nervousness. Your timing and coordination was not right. Because of Rajiv, even the synchronization was way off. The performance was not great but nice. Even the energy was low.
Farhan Akhtar: The contest has reached a part where you need to concentrate on your steps. The focus should not only be on getting the steps correct but also dancing well. Since you are not a dancer you are bound to be nervous. But then you cannot get away with it.
Saroj Khan: Danced well. But you were feed a lot more than you could take. You need to use your imagination and not pick up steps straight from the movie. It didn't look like a folk dance.
Comments:
The comments from Sailesh, (the choreographer for Delnaaz and Rajiv) triggered a heated conversation between him and the judges.
Sailesh: Actually we were nervous. I have only seen the song once. I thought we had to put in folk and filmi dance together. I was confused, apart from that, I tried making Rajiv comfortable. However he did take some time to grasp the steps.
Saroj Khan: Kashmiri folk is one of the easiest dances. You haven't done your research.
Farhan: Confusion is dangerous. Your confusion affects their performance. You need to be clear.
Sailesh: I was caught between making Rajiv comfortable and giving him good moves.
Saroj Khan: Your confusion has brought your couples on the pedestal of danger zone.
Judges' Scores:
Malaika Arora khan: 5

With the sound of lehjim and energized moves of the small children, the air in the studio was charged up. This time they managed to strike the deepest chords of the judge's hearts and got an overwhelming response from them.
Judges' comments:
Malaika Arora Khan: (gives a standing ovation) tumcha performance, khoop avdle. I was waiting to find some flaw, but there was none. You were fabulous and mind blowing. Even the kids were amazing.
Farhan: I will say you were mind blasting. A superlative performance. Didn't look nervous. It looked like you were having a good time. (Whistles)
Saroj Khan: (whistles 4 times) Mind blowing. I have no words. (She was so thrilled with their performance that she called them close and gave them 101 "Socha hoga aaj tak kyun nahin diya, magar aaj ka app ka performance dil ko chu gaya."
Comments:
Choreographers Al and Mel were choked and had no words to express their happiness.

Shilpa and Apurva:
Shilpa and Apurva have always managed to maintain a consistency. This time they performed to the Gujurati folk number dholi taro from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
Judges' comments:
Malaika Arora Khan: Bahu Saras che. Aaj ka performance sabse best performance tha. Last time, I had asked you kuch alag karo, but you have really done better. Apoorva was brilliant. Good energy and teamwork. Excellent performance.
Farhan Akhtar: A flawless performance. You looked like you were enjoying yourselves. Only drawback was that you didn't utilize the stage to the maximum. Didn't use the space.
Saroj Khan: You should use the space. Dandiya is about going in circles. But apart from that you need to use your imagination. Otherwise, it was a good performance.

The Elimination Hour
One by one, the couples stepped into the suraksha chakra in the order:
Sachin and Supriya
Poonam and Manish
Rajeshwari and Varun
Archana and Parmeet
Yet again, Delnaaz-Rajiv remained in the danger zone, this time with Shilpa and Apurva! But then, Shilpa and Apurva were eliminated!
Excerpts from an exclusive interview with the eliminated couple Shilpa and Apurva: Jodi No 05 Shilpa and Apurva This week's elimination was definitely a big shock, not only to the eliminated couple, but to all present in the studio. The couple sounded poignant, as they spoke about their experience on the sets of Nach Baliye. Apoorva: Dus logo ki jung mein 9 couples ko to bahar jana hi hain. But we had a ball! Shilpa: I had decided that when I get eliminated, I wouldn't cry. But I cannot hold back my emotions. As far as my experience on Nach Baliye is concerned, it was great. I really enjoyed being here. It had become a routine. Saroj Khan is one of the biggest names in the film industry, but for me, she has been a motherly figure. For the very first time, the judges also seemed disheartened by this result. Malaika and Saroj Khan couldn't hold back their emotions as tears rolled down their cheeks. Farhan too seemed shocked and gave a standing ovation to the couple. What was even more surprising was the fact that Sailesh (Delnaaz and Rajiv's choreographer) wept inconsolably. He said, "Before the show, Apoorva said he would pray for me. But didn't know that he would take my bad faith to himself." |
