Hello music lovers,

We've had a number of music related threads on this forum, but I realized we have none on lyrics. A travesty I set out to correct immediately because the lyrics are such an important part of a song!

More often than not, it's the words and the music and the feelings that they evoke together that moves us and makes us feel something.

It could be just a word, or an exquisitely woven phrase, a metaphor that's unique, or a life truth that you fall back on or hold on to as your dearest philosophy. It could be a critical observation couched in sarcasm, a clever pun that evokes laughter and applause, or a heartfelt plea that brings tears.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please post your favorite song lyrics in this thread.
Please do give credit to the writer/ lyricist/ poet. If it's from a movie, tell us which movie and name the song as well. You are welcome to post the YT video link for the song.
You can post lyrics from a movie song or a pop song, a devotional song or a folk song. Anything at all with lyrics that speak to your heart.
You can tell us why those words/ lines hit you so strongly and what they mean to you.
You can post a couple of lines from it, or it can be the entire song lyrics - whatever you connect with most.
You can post lyrics in any language, but if it's in a language other than Hindi or English, please provide a translation so everyone can comprehend their beauty.
Please follow IF CoC at all times, which means abusive or foul language isn't permitted.
Any lyrics that contain possible Triggers can be posted as a Mature Post and you can mention a Trigger Warning in your post.
This part of Kal Ho Naa Ho sad version I have memorized by heart, as I always find it relatable and remember these words whenever something disappoints me in life. The words are soothing.
Sach hai ke dil to dukha hai
Humne magar socha hai
Dil ko hai gham kyun
Aankh hai nam kyun
Hona hi tha jo hua hai
Lovely thread, Riya. smiley27smiley20
There are so many songs and their lyrics which I adore so much.
Sharing one of my favourite lyrics from a very popular Rabindrasangeet:
আমার মুক্তি আলোয় আলোয় এই আকাশে,
আমার মুক্তি ধুলায় ধুলায় ঘাসে ঘাসে ॥
দেহমনের সুদূর পারে হারিয়ে ফেলি আপনারে,
গানের সুরে আমার মুক্তি ঊর্ধ্বে ভাসে ॥
Translation :
My Freedom is in the Light of this Sky,
My Freedom is in the Dust of this Earth, and in the Grass which is spreading out,
In this Freedom I lose myself beyond my body and mind, towards a distant Shore, ...
and with the tune of Songs my Freedom ascends and floats high above.
Posting some classic lines from one of my favorite Hindi / Urdu poets: Sahir Ludhianvi.
I can't even begin to describe how some of these lyrics make me feel. Sahir's lyrics can be hard-hitting, scathing, acerbic, cynical. Yet his romantic lines are some of the most exquisite I've ever come across. The dichotomy in the man's pen amazes me. Cynicism versus optimism and romanticism... he could do them all with consummate ease.
Barbadiyon ka soz manana fizool tha
Barbadiyon ka jashn manata chala gaya
- Film: Hum Dono, Song: Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya
Aasmaan pe hai khuda aur zameen pe hum
Aaj kal woh is taraf dekhta hai kum
- Film: Phir Subah Hogi
Jahan mein aisa kaun hai ke jisko gham mila nahin
- Film: Hum Dono
Kaun rota hai kisi aur ki khatir, ae dost
Sabko apni hi kisi baat pe rona aaya
- Film: Hum Dono, Song: Kabhi khud pe
Utna hi upkaar samajh koi jitna saath nibhaaye
janam maran ka mel hai sapna, ye sapna bisra de
Koi na sang mare
Film: Chitralekha, Song: Mann re tu kahe na
Maana ke abhi tere mere armaanon ki keemat kuch bhi nahi
mitti ka bhi hai kuch mol magar insaanon ki keemat kuch bhi nahi
Insaanon ki izzat jab jhoote sikkon mein na toli jayegi
- Film: Phir Subah Hogi, Song: Woh subah kabhi toh aayegi
This entire song but these lines in particular:
Ye duniya jahan aadmi kuch nahi hai
wafa kuch nahi, dosti kuch nahi hai
yahan pyar ki qadr hi kuch nahi hai
ye duniya agar mil bhi jaye toh kya hai
- Film: Pyaasa, Ye duniya agar mil bhi jaaye
Humko apna saaya tak aksar bezaar mila
- Film Pyaasa, Song: Jaane woh kaise log the
Naukar ho ya maalik
Leader ho ya public
Apne aage sabhi jhuke hain
kya Raja kya sainik
- Film: Pyaasa, Song: Sar jo tera chakraye
Hum aapko khwabon mein la la ke satayenge
Hum aapki aankhon se neendein hi uda de to?
- Film: Pyaasa, Song: Hum aapki aankhon mein
Jab kabhi maine tera chand sa chehra dekha
Eid ho ya ke na ho, mere liye Eid huyi
- Film: Dil hee toh hai, Song: Nigahein milane ko jee chahta hai
Khaak ko but aur but ko devta karta hai ishq
Inteha ye hai ki bande ko khuda karta hai ishq
- Film: Barsat ki Raat, Song: Na toh karvan ki talash hai
This entire song but these lines stand out
Kya khaak woh jeena hai jo apne hee liye ho
Khud mitke kisi aur ko mitne se bacha le
- Film: Baazi, Song: Tadbeer se bigdi huyi
There are probably many more I'm forgetting right now. Most of his songs have unforgettable lyrics
Some songs have a deeper meaning for us than others, not just because they are masterfully composed or thoughtfully written, but, because they speak to us on a deeper level. These songs touch our hearts so deeply that we feel like every phrase has significance, talks to our emotions, and appeals to our spirit!
Here's a song that has occasionally talked to me, spoken for me, and impacted me!
Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Talat Mahmood
Music Director: Anil Biswas
Lyricists: Prem Dhawan
Film: Tarana
Actor : Madhubala, Dilip Kumar,
Seene me sulagte hain armaan
aankho me udaasi chhaayi hai
ye aaj teri duniya se hame
taqdeer kahaan le aayi hai
seene me sulagte hain armaan
Kuchh aankh me aansoo baaki hain
jo mere gham ke saathi hain
jo mere gham ke saathi hain
ab dil hai naa dil ke armaan hain
ab dil hai naa dil ke armaan hain
bas main hu meri tanhaayi hai
seene me sulagte hain armaan
I am not a fan of RK, but I adore this song for these lyrics that capture a lot of my emotional bonds in this life . A delicate portrayal of a fragile heart's inner feelings.
Aap ke anurodh pe, main ye geet sunaataa hoon main ye geet sunaataa hoon
apne dil ki baaton se, aap kaa dil bahlaataa hoon ...aap ke anurodh pe
mat poochho auron ke dukh mein, ye prem kavi kyon rotaa hai
bas chot kisi ko lagti hai aur dard kisi ko hotaa hai
door kahin koi darpan toote, tadap ke main rah jaataa hoon
aap ke anurodh pe, main ye geet sunaataa hoon
main ye geet sunaataa hoon
taareef main jiski kartaa hoon
taareef main jiski kartaa hoon
kyaa roop hai wo, kyaa khushabuu hai
kuchh baat nahin aisi koi, ye ek suron ka jaadoo hai
koyal ki ek kook se sabke dil mein hook uthaataa hoon
aap ke anurodh pe, main ye geet sunaataa hoon
main ye geet sunaataa hoon
main pahne phirtaa hoon jo, wo zajeeren kaise banti hain
main pahne phirtaa hoon jo, wo zajeeren kaise banti hain
ye bhed bataa doon geeton mein tasweerein kaise banti hain
sundar honthon ki laali se, main rang roop churaataa hoon
aap ke anurodh pe, main ye geet sunaataa hoon
main ye geet sunaataa hoon
apne dil ki baaton se, aap kaa dil bahlaataa hoon
aap ke anurodh pe....
Film: Anurodh (1977)
Actors: Rajesh Khanna,
Music: Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics: Anand Bakshi
All Ijaazat songs are wonderful but these lines from Mera Kuch Samaan are ........
एक इजाज़त दे दो बस, जब इसको दफ़नाऊँगी
मैं भी वहीं सो जाऊंगी
I think she is saying, the day I die will be the day I won't have these memories. She is actually asking Mahendra(Naseeruddin Shah) to allow her to keep his memories or let her die with those memories. Gulzar is a wonderful poet.
I wish to fly in the lovely sky like a bird.
My freedom in the world's meadow has opened a new space for me!
This song uplifts everyone's spirits, makes our hearts flutter, and inspires us to run into the woodlands with exuberance and an overwhelming joy that lets our feet tap the ground while our imaginations open our eyes to a stunning world!smiley42
PANCHHI BANOON UDTI PHIROON: LYRICS AND TRANSLATION
panchhii banuu.n uDtii phiruu.n mast gagan me.n
As a bird, I want to fly in the beautiful sky.
aaj mai.n aazaad huu.n duniyaa ke chaman me.n
Today, I have been liberated in the garden of the world.
(hillorii, hillorii)
mere jiivan me.n chamkaa saveraa
The morning light has shined brightly in my life.
miTaa dil se vah gham kaa andheraa
It has removed the darkness of sorrow from my heart.
hare kheton me.n gaaye koii lahraa
Someone sings, billowing in the green fields.
yahaa.n dil par kisi kaa na pahraa
Here, no one keeps guard over the heart.
rang bahaaro.n ne bharaa mere jiivan me.n
The Spring has filled my life with color.
aaj mai.n aazaad huu.n duniyaa ke chaman me.n
Today, I have been liberated in the garden of the world.
dil yah chaahe bahaaro.n se kheluu.n
My heart desires that I play with the Spring.
gorii nadiyaa ke dhaaro.n se kheluu.n
I shall frolic in the currents of the fair river.
chaand suuraj sitaaro.n se kheluu.n
I shall play with the Moon, the Sun, and the stars.
apnii baaho.n me.n aakaash le luu.n
I shall embrace the sky in my arms.
baDhtii chaluu.n gaatii chaluu.n apnii lagan me.n
I shall forge ahead as I sing to my own tune.
aaj mai.n aazaad huu.n duniyaa ke chaman me.n
Today, I feel liberated in the garden of the world.
(hillorii, hillorii)
mai.n to oDhuu.ngii baadal kaa aa.nchal
I shall wear a shawl of clouds.
mai.n to pahnuu.ngi bijlii kii paayal
I shall wear an anklet of lightning rods.
chhiin luu.ngii ghaTaao.n se kaajal
I shall steal some kohl from the dark clouds.
meraa jiivan hai nadiyaa kii halchal
My life is like the movement of a river:
dil se mere lahre.n uThe.n ThanDii pavan me.n
waves arise from my heart in the cool breeze.
aaj mai.n aazaad huu.n duniyaa ke chaman me.n
Today, I have been liberated in the garden of the world.
