Eid ul Fitr, one of the two Islamic festivals celebrated by Muslims across the globe. It marks the end of the blessed month of Ramadan and is observed once the new moon has been sighted. The festival is also known as breaking of the fast, and the announcement of what day this festival will be observed is typically announced the night before.
During the month of Ramadan, all Muslims for whom fasting is compulsory will have spent this month abstaining from eating/drinking during set hours, earning good deeds through charity etc. and abstaining from negative behaviours i.e. lying, backbiting and swearing. Therefore, this Eid is seen as a way to celebrate a successful Ramadan and enjoy delicious foods with friends and family.
Preparations for Eid commence during the last few days of Ramadan - where families will shop for new clothes, shoes and other accessories. Some countries observe "Chand Raat" which is the night before Eid and is usually when women will buy "last minute" stuff they need for the celebrations. Women and young girls buy bangles and apply henna on their hands.
The morning of Eid commences with a special prayer at the mosque followed by a sermon by the Imam. This sermon is known as the "Kutbah". Prior to attending the mosque, it is customary to eat something sweet. Muslim brothers and sisters greet one another with "Eid Mubarak". Children will get "eidi" also known as a "gift" from their elders and majority of the day is spent in the company of family and friends eating delicious food and enjoying one another's company.
Fitrana is a donation which is compulsory for all Muslims to offer for Eid. Muslims will typically give this Fitrana to the needy prior to Eid so they have sufficient time to prepare for their Eid.
This Eid may mark the end of Ramadan for all Muslims, but it most certainly is NOT an opportunity for all Muslims to suddenly forget all the good deeds and habits adopted during the month of Ramadan. Instead all are encouraged to continue practising these good habits for the rest of one's life.
