You do not have to like twerking. It is completely fine to find that it is vulgar and inappropriate. However, judges have the responsibility to give criticism responsibly without breaking a person or publicly berating them.

Something like, "You are such a wonderful and talented dancer, and I enjoyed most of your performance. But the twerking at the end was unnecessary. I personally found it vulgar, and it ruined the performance for me. With your talent, I really wish you focused on Lavani instead of adding twerking."

PS: I think both twerking and fusion dancing are just fine. Twerking is for brown and black girls to show off their God-given fine booties.

But this is basically exactly what she said, just slightly more elongated.

No, she didn't.

Firstly, Kirron Kher had an unconstructive tone of voice. Secondly, she started off with a criticism. Thirdly, she made exaggerated hand movements to call out and berate the contestant further. Fourthly, she made a blanket judgment on twerking and vulgarity. Finally, she implicitly accused the dancer of attention-seeking.

What I posted is an example of the sandwich method of delivering feedback. It begins and ends with praise. It does not make any blanket statement about twerking, nor does it accuse the contestant of any form of attention-seeking or vulgarity. It acknowledges that the perception of twerking as vulgar is a personal point of view and preference, not a hard fact.

Words matter. Although it may appear to be the same thing, the intent, impact, and, hopefully, outcome are different. I hope you can appreciate the differences. I am sure we have all been the recipient of feedback that broke us at some point or other.

The reason she started with a criticism is because the dancer had already been highly praised by Malaika, if you watch the full video that is. Malaika comes out gushing over the dancer. Kirron actually was smiling and enjoying the performance when the dancer was first twerking. Her smile only fell when later on in the song, the dancer returns to twerking and keeps on doing it over and over. That's when the judges all get up to give her a standing ovation, except for Kirron, so they weirdly look at her reaction to see what's up and why she's not celebrating. If Kirron feels this is vulgar, then why should she be obligated to also stand up and cheer this dancer on blindly? She felt offended both for the the desecration of this classical dance but also because she knows this dancer is better than that so she voiced her opinion. If the entire panel of judges had been equally critical, then maybe Kirron adding onto it would have looked bad but in this case, when she's being gushed on over and over by everyone except Kirron, I don't think her behavior is uncalled for.

In fact, even after Kirron is done, Malaika goes back to praising the dancer and telling her she has nothing to worry about because her dancing is not vulgar no matter what others say. So in fact, your version of starting out with praise and ending with praise is exactly what happens thanks to Malaika. There needs to be some constructive criticism as well and Kirron provides that in a rather respectful manner in the middle part of the segment. Honestly, Malaika was the most offended party there probably because she felt her entire career was being denigrated by Kirron Kher's comments.

Also Indians are an emotional people and use hand motions while talking so now Kirron Kher should be reprimanded for using "exaggerated hand movements?" This is something that should be considered a flaw?? If so, heaven knows how faulty I am because I use "exaggerated hand movements" all the time! This reminds me of Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway where it's little pesky details like that which are used to demean a people and make them "the other" the way the state authorities came after Rani for cultural differences like being emotional over reuniting with her child. It seems like such a silly thing to task Kirron over especially because one could look at Malaika and argue that she too does exaggerated hand movements in an effort to prop up and console the dancer. Are hers okay because she was in support of the dancer? They are only to be criticized if they are going against your side?

When you put yourself out there on a public show, you need to be ready to receive criticism because you will never not only receive praise. The entertainment business is very cruel and you have to have a thick skin to survive. Malaika says as much that there are always going to be people who don't like you or what you do, but you need to feel confident enough in yourself that you are unphased. In the entertainment industry, you put yourself out there in the public and not everyone has the same views and opinions. The public is not a monolith. There are thousands of demographics between gender, age, race, class, etc. Kirron is representing all those people who do find twerking offensive because that is still a group of people who exist and surprise, surprise, not all of them look like Kirron. Not everyone who finds twerking offensive is going to be a woman like Kirron or her same age. There are young people who feel the way she does as there are older people who might agree with Malaika. Pretending that there are not people who think this "dance" is offensive is rather silly and instead coddles the dancer.

Where am I denying Kirron Kher's right to give criticism or find something vulgar? I do not expect Kirron to gush over something she genuinely dislikes. But I will expect her to show kindness when she expresses herself.

Anyway, my assessment of Kirron Kher's feedback is the same irrespective of what the other judges did. My assessment would remain even if the heavens rained flowers on the contestant or hell split the earth to swallow her into its depths.

Feedback techniques apply to each individual who gives feedback, not a group. I did not find Kirron Kher constructive or respectful in her criticism and I have explained why.

I am an Indian and use exaggerated hand movements while talking. You're missing the context and nuance. I found the hand gestures to hone in on the movement of twerking specifically rude and nitpicking.

I do not believe in undue cruelty because entertainment is cruel, or people need to develop thick skin. There is no excuse for cruelty and I will always hold people accountable when they could do better.

And once again, I reiterate that I am not denying anyone their opinion about twerking. I am sure people of all ages in India and across the world find it vulgar. My entire point is how you express your dislikes.

What gives? smiley36
