Of course it is, especially if I’m watching a romantic movie or TV show. I absolutely need the leading couple to be appealing, otherwise I’m not going to watch it. You think I’ll be hugging a pillow, kicking the air and giggling watching Abhishek Bachan say cute shit to the heroine? Fuck that.

Yes of course good looks is imperative, especially in entertainment industry.

Good looking villains/grey charcaters become so palatable and attractive to audience that entire storylines are changed/new movies or shows from the villain perspective is made.

Examples - Chuck Bass in Gossip Girl, Klaus, Katherine in Vampire diaries, the Joker in Batman.

On the other hand if some character is not supposed to look good or are supposed to be average looking, then also they are beautified to match the standards. Example - Brienne and Yigrette in Game of thrones, Hermione in Harry Potter

I myself would not watch any show/movie with someone who is not attractive on any level.

It's what it is.
