The number of environment friendly celebs in Bollywood is on the rise. We take a look at who is doing what to help planet earth.
The IIFA announced last year that they would be rolling out a green carpet instead of a red one in their effort to spread awareness about global warming. This made IIFA's brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan become more active than ever in voicing his concerns over the same. At a press conference he said, "I would like more and more people to join us in this campaign of making people aware of what global warming is all about and in the coming years what it's going to do to the environment as well as our country."
Apart from Global Warming Big B supports is afforestation. In January 2007, Amitabh lent his support to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Billion Tree Campaign. The response was humongous. Nearly 3.46 billion trees were pledged and 1.99 billion trees were planted around the world. Bachchan Senior echoed the sentiments of many senior citizens in Mumbai who had grown wary of the increasing sound levels in the city, when he participated in the No-Honking rally.
Preity Zinta is the only Bollywood actress to be actively involved in environment- friendly programmes. She has swept the streets of south Mumbai, with boyfriend Ness Wadia and fellow actor Shah Rukh Khan, during her cleanliness drive. She posed with a jute bag that read "Say No to Plastic." According to reports, Preity's bungalow in her hometown of Himachal Pradesh is going to be an environment friendly home, replete with solar panels and all. She wants a luxury car which scores high on the green chart.
Recently, Zinta appeared in a National Geographic video pleading with global citizens to be more environmentally conscious. Zinta is seen saying, "Please try saving the planet. You don't have to do a big thing. All you can do is use as little plastic as you can because plastic is very toxic; it's bad for the environment. So if you don't want Mumbai to drown in the rains or London to have too much rain or excessive heat anywhere around the world, save it, in your little way; use less plastic."
Shah Rukh likes to accompany Preity in all her environment friendly endeavors. He appeared in the National Geographic videos released on World Earth Day saying, "I try and do the smallest thing possible. I go to a shop and say that I don't need a bag for a t-shirt that I bought. Whatever little we can do in our own small way, I'm sure the earth will be a much nicer place to live in and these things should be followed everyday like a habit. So I try and do that not only on earth day but everyday. It's time we change."
Akshaye Khanna walks his talk! He got himself a brand new REVA, the electric car invented by Chetan Maini. Chetan says, "Globally we see celebrities coming forward and supporting causes they believe in, whether it is environment issues or human rights. It is great to know that an Indian celebrity like Akshaye Khanna is taking steps to help the environment. His decision to purchase the REVA for its environment friendly advantage and great city mobility is a reflection of his commitment to this cause." The reserved actor has made a big statement by purchasing this CO2 emission free vehicle. The respect that the actor has earned from environmentalists may make other Bollywood actors go green with envy…
Salman Khan may be called the biggest enemy of environment after he shot dead unsuspecting blackbucks. But Sallu changed his attitude after the court trial and how! He has taken to riding a bicycle whenever he can to Film City and back home. This may be for some ulterior reason but in his own unique manner Salman is contributing to keep the air around us clean!
