The mosque came to be known as the Alamgiri Mosque for some centuries, after the name of Aurangzeb, don't confuse it with the Alamgir Mosque, that still stands on the ruins of the Shri Vishnu temple, but with time, the current name was adopted in common parlance, deriving from an adjoining sacred waterbody: Gyan Vapi ("Well of Knowledge"), which, in all likelihood, even predated the temple. Those who wish to counteract continue to call it Alamgiri Mosque, though even news outlets call it Gyanvapi Mosque now.
