Chapter 4
An unfamiliar overwhelming scent of rose and tuberose hit her nostrils. Abhira scrunched her cute nose in deep slumber. The romantic soft piano tune was floating in from a distance. The soft warmth of her blanket, and the satin sheets underneath her, were making it hard for Abhira to let go of the last drop of snooze. Slowly she opened her eyes to a beautifully decorated room. The room was dimly lit with hundreds of scented candles. Strings of flowers were hanging from the ceiling, and rose petals were scattered on the bed as well as on the floor. Two beautiful towel origami ducks were sitting at the foot of the bed. The music was coming from a record player. Abhira looked outside. The room had floor-to-ceiling windows just like their home in Mussoorie. The familiar background of hills and stars in the distance made her squeak in delight like a child. She shot up from the bed and reached the window overlooking the much-loved queen of hills. She tried to open the glass doors to let the mountain breeze in. However, her fingers could only clutch the air as she found herself in the middle of the room, away from the aperture. The more she tried, the more away she was from the casement. Suddenly, a prick on her nape alerted her to someoneās presence behind her. She whirled around to come face to face with the object of her many nightmares!
āYuvraj!ā She tried to scream. A cold hand of fear clenched her heart in a vice grip. Her voice died in her throat.
Yuvraj took a step forward, making her to take a step back. He stalked her like a predator stalks his prey. A dangerous evil glint in his eyes made Abhira shudder in horror. She looked around her, trying to find a way out of this living nightmare. She shrieked when Yuvraj sprung towards her.
Armaan woke up with a jolt. Abhira was having a terrifying dream. She was thrashing, screeching in her sleep. Armaan tried to wake her up without any success. The commotion brought in Drs and nurses.
āMove aside. Let us do our job.ā Someone instructed him. But he was unable to take a step or speak. He stood there, helpless, like a statue when someone pushed him aside. The agony he felt looking at Abhiraās state was unmatched. It felt like a physical pain, like his heart was breaking into a thousand pieces, and his head was pounding.
After some time, Abhira went back to dreamless sleep. The Dr. approached him to reassure him. But nothing could make him feel better now. He could see the devastated state she was in. It was worse than how it was after her motherās death. Armaan was always amazed to see a resilient Abhira. She was the strongest person he ever knew. To look at that person, quivering in fear, was nerve-wracking. And it was as much his fault as Yuvrajās. He sat by her side, hoping against hope. Abhira needed him and he was determined to do anything to make her smile again.
Armaan felt a gentle tug at his hair. He could recognize that simple touch even in comatose. He couldnāt remember when he had dozed off. The pull in his hair made him smile. He opened his eyes and lifted his head slowly. Abhira was looking at him with unnamed emotions in her honey-brown eyes. He searched for something accusatory in them. But he only found trust and relief.
āAbhira!ā Armaan whispered her name like a chant.
Her eyes softened. A half-smile graced her face. Her strength once again astounded him. Any trace of last night's nightmare was not visible on her beautiful face. Nevertheless, Armaan knew the torrents of emotions and vulnerability she was trying to hide. He cupped her cheek and placed a whispering kiss on her forehead.
āAbhira! Are you okay? How are you feeling right now?ā He voiced his concern.
āI am fine Armaan. I am feeling good. How are you? Are you okay? Where is everyone?ā Her reply was instantaneous.
āI am sorry Abhira. I failed to protect you once again. I donāt know how Yuvraj managed to infiltrate our home. My instinct was telling me something was off! I failed to understand that. I am sorry. I couldnāt imagine what would have happened if we didnāt reach on time.ā
āSshh! Armaan. I am safe. See. You canāt get rid of your āstationary ki dukanā so soon!ā Abhira chuckled without realizing she had referred to her as HIS āstationary ki dukanā.
Armaanās breath hitched at her unfiltered declaration. He hunched over Abhira and kissed her forehead again.
āYour āKhadoosmanā wouldnāt even dream of getting rid of his āstationary ki dukanā anytime.ā Armaan declared with a smirk.
Abhira caught his words and blushed furiously. She averted her eyes.
āWhere is Yuvraj?ā
āAbhira. Donāt think about him now. Just get better and come home. Everyone is waiting for you. Stay here for a few minutes while I call the Dr.ā Armaan got up to leave for a few minutes. However, before he could take one step, Abhira caught his hand in her. Agitation marred her features as she held onto his fingers as if her life depended on it.
Armaan kicked himself. How could he forget Abhiraās susceptibility so soon? He immediately sat down and pacified her by caressing her.
āSshh! I am not going anywhere. I will be right here with you. Donāt worry.ā
Abhira smiled once again. It pained him to see her trying so hard in front of him.
āAbhira. You never have to hide yourself in front of me. You can be anything you want. You donāt have to pretend in my presence. You can shatter, I will gather you once again. I am here. You know that right?ā
āFor now!ā Abhiraās small voice reached him barely. Armaan felt a punch in his gut.
āI am here with you as long as you want me to. Until and unless you dismiss me, I wonāt leave your side. I will be with you just like I promised.ā
This time the smile that graced Abhira was a genuine one, Armaan could bet on his life.
They talked for hours. They had hospital breakfast together. Even though both of them were weirded out by the look of hospital food, their empty stomach refused to wait anymore. Around 9 in the morning, half of the Poddar clan came to welcome Abhira after her discharge. Aryan, Kiara, Krish, Rohit, Ruhi, and even Charu came with big smiles on their faces and purple daisies in their hand. Purple daisies were Abhiraās favorite flower. All of them made a sincere effort to cheer her up. Abhira too was gracious and participated in their charades. On reaching Poddar mansion, both Armaan and Abhira were surprised to see the grand welcome home arrangement for them.
Everyone was at home to welcome them back. Vidya maa did her Arti and made her dip her toes in āAltaā to mark her āGrihaprabeshā once again. She apologized for not welcoming her the first time. Both Abhira and Armaan took the elderās blessings.
Later that night, after dinner Armaan went to their bedroom to look at some pending cases. He was too immersed in his case files to notice the passing of time. A reminder of Abhiraās medicine on his phone brought him back to his surroundings. He realized an hour had passed and Abhira was not in yet. A call to cell phone went unanswered as the phone was in the bedroom itself. Even though Yuvrajās chapter was over, he panicked. The first place he thought Abhira could be was the garden, which was empty of her presence, unfortunately. A search of the home turned out to be fruitless. He was worried sick by now. Not wanting to disturb anyone else, and as a last resort, he decided to check the terrace.
He found her, bathing in moonlight once again. She looked like a nymph in her blue suit, hair unbound. The sight reminded him of the day not too long ago when he found her in the garden. Her eyes were devoid of any tears tonight. Instead, he found raw determination and unmatched bravery. It was not the first time he found himself falling deeper in love with his enigmatic wife.
āBhabi! What are you thinking?ā Rohit asked making Armaan realize she was not alone.
Abhira didnāt answer for a few seconds. Then she smiled her beautiful smile. āI am not thinking about anything Rohit. Or rather you could say, I am not trying to think about anything. It feels surreal to think that the terror of my past is no more. I should be happy, but instead, I find myself to be angry. He was not supposed to die this soon. I wanted him to atone himself for killing my mother and Anurag.ā
āHow do you know Yuvraj died?ā Rohit was astonished.
āI heard you and Armaan talking.ā
āThatās not how we wanted you to know.ā
āI know. But it doesnāt matter. I am not that easy to break.ā Abhira chuckled.
āI know.ā Rohit scowled, not at all amused at his friend's antics.
They were silent for the next several moments. Armaan was contemplating calling Abhira for her medicine when he heard her talk once again.
āRohit. You do trust me, right?ā
āDo you need to ask Abhira?ā Rohit addressed her as his friend this time. He calls her Abhira whenever he senses she needs or wants her friend, not her Devar.
āI know. Anyway, I want you to tell me whatās going on between you and Ruhi. I know, to talk about this matter with me is kind of weird. But still, tell me. I hate to see you like this. And I want to be there for you.ā
āAgain, I know. Itās just that I am not sure whatās in between us anymore. You know why I left when I left, and it was not what I told the family. After coming back, I thought of giving our marriage another chance. I could see how happy you and Bhaiya were in your marriage. I thought, Ruhi and I can be there too. And Ruhi is trying. She is doing everything she can. I donāt have any complaints regarding that.ā
āThen? What is it?ā
āHow do I explain? Itās just that, she is trying too hard. She is doing too much to compensate for something that should have come naturally, her feelings for me. I am not sure whether she would ever be able to let go of her first love and move on.ā
āI have no expertise in the matter of heart. But one thing I know for sure. It doesnāt matter whether you are her first love or second, it matters whether you are her last or not. My mother was fortunate enough to find true love twice in her life. It was like God was trying to make up for all the misfortune that befell her. My Papa was her second and last love. Abhimanyu, Ruhiās Poppy was her first. My Papa had to wait five years before my Mamma fell in love with him. But once she did, she never looked back. She spent all her life loving only him till the end. I am not saying you too have to wait that long. I am just saying, be patient. If possible, shower her with all the love you have. Make her happy. Take her away to someplace where no past can reach you. And you will see her blossoming under your love. You both deserve it.ā
āWhat changed between you two Abhira?ā
āI am not sure Rohit. I am not even sure whether things really have changed or not. The day I realized my love for Armaan, my heart broke. I came to know about his past love. At first, the pain was too raw, too overwhelming. I couldnāt breathe, I couldnāt think. Then, after a few days, I stopped myself from feeling miserable all the time. I perceived I didnāt even have the right to feel that way. Ours was not a real marriage. He never promised me to love. I was being stupid. I focused on my studies and career. I found a great mentor in my boss. And then you came back. Gradually, things began to change. I am not sure where all this is going, to be truthful. But I am happy now. And thatās all that matters to me. You, me, Armaan, Ruhi, all of us will be okay at the end. Together or not.
Armaan came back to their bedroom, leaving Abhira with Rohit on the terrace. The revelation came as a real shock to him. He couldnāt imagine the kind of heartbreak both Rohit and Abhira had gone through because of him and Ruhi. It looked like no matter how much he tried; he could only mess up everything further. He always thought Abhira and Rohit were too immature to understand them. How wrong was he? It seems they are more grown-up than Ruhi and Armaan can be. He decided to talk to Ruhi and come clean before her so that she could move on finally. He will confess to Abhira as well. He will make her believe in his love and hope she reciprocates them. He hoped it was not too late to start again.
A song that made me write this chapter..
Loved the update. Hope Armaan confesses soon.... Ruhi needs to.move on.....
Happy to know that Armaan realizes its him and Ruhi that are immature. He should repent for hurting Abhira and Rohit.
Hey this chapter was terrific! I could literally imagine the scene. This literally stood a testament to abhiraās characterization so far!
Loved it! š

Armaan is so different isn't he. He is not our typical ML. He makes mistakes but tries to do his best to amend them. He is emotionally challenged I feel.
