I saw a lot of posts comparing Abhira to other ITV female leads- Naira, Sai and Khushi so I decided to write about it here. I feel like Abhira is kind of a mixture of all three or at least has similar qualities with all three.
Abhira/ Naira-
Abhira is Naira’s granddaughter and has been compared in the show by Manish to be rather like her. But I think they have some key differences-
Naira was a sherni with massive trust issues. Even though she had incredibly loving parents and affluent extended family and an amazing older brother, and she was raised as a princess by her dad- chose to run away and stay in Rishikesh as an orphan. Later when she came back, it took her time to understand her mom and make amends. Similarly she was slow to fall in love with Kartik and when she did, the couple had their own familial issues that created distrust between them. So even though I love Naira, I can’t forget that she hurt her parents and family so much by running away and then did the same thing years later by playing dead. That is very unforgivable- that she did that to people who loved her so much. It shows that she had really skewed thinking- she was never really a family person.
Abhira is not like that at all- she loved her mother more than anything and was the best daughter in the series IMO. She and Akshara had the best mother- daughter relationship- her mom would scold her, reprimand her and they would fight but she never held resentments against her. She was not spoiled at all- she was always helping her mom at the resort and her law cases while pursuing her studies. Another point- Abhira is unapologetically herself. She does have to mind her tongue and control herself sometimes but she is not afraid of speaking her mind and allaying her fears. She is also career- minded and does not give up- vastly different from Naira who had to be persuaded to take up dance and establish academy as her father’s dream and then changed careers on a whim.
Abhira/ Sai- Abhira is a ball of sunshine while Sai is fire itself. That sums up their personalities. Abhira was raised by a mother who always cautioned her to talk politely and be mature so Abhira is much sweeter. She can be sarcastic but not mean. She also melts easily and says sorry- like she did with Ruhi. She gets scared- Sai was fearless. Sai was a police officer’s daughter who was being harassed by Jagtap for 2 years. Hence Sai had greater capacity to bear, she is very strong and because she moved around different places as kid, she was internally more used to change. Abhira was raised in an idyllic bubble by her mom so until Yuvraj came in- she had a fairly peaceful life and lived normally. Sai was state topper- she was very smart so was a little arrogant and prideful. Abhira is ambitious but not a topper extremely smart so doesn’t have Sai’s drive. A lot of Sai’s personality was also tempered by the toxic Chavans who mercilessly made her work in the kitchen and humiliated her all the time while she was in med college- so her sharp edge and constant quarrelling can be forgiven. As she didn’t have a mother, she was also given all sorts of advice by her mother in law and maid about marriage and family while her husband got nothing, I think that also influenced her thinking. Sai had a very strong personality and immense self respect sometimes to her detriment because ultimately she lost the love of her life and her son because of them. That is her great failing- she was too focused on right and wrong than what’s good for her and kids. Abhira is more flexible- she accepts she makes mistakes and blunders and is more accepting of them. She also sees grey more- she understands the Poddars are not completely black or white and hence is extremely soft sometimes. She also doesn’t fight all the time- she respectfully asks first.
Abhira/ Khushi- Khushi is a very lovable character but she was very young and had no career ambitions. But her zest for life, her innovative jugaads and her cute antics makes her very similar to Abhira. In the end, both are just raised very differently with different priorities that distinguishes them greatly. Abhira is more like an Alpha female even though her characterisation is unique because she is not cold or silent or too intelligent or manipulative or charismatic. But because Abhira shines with an innate confidence that perhaps comes from a mother’s unconditional love?, she is able to dominate and speak her mind even though she has a thousand flaws. That’s why Abhira is my favourite ITV because one doesn’t have to be an overachiever, A- type, perfectionist to take control of your life. Just love yourself and be confident- you will automatically become an Alpha!
