I could easily go beyond 5-6 though if I include Sridevi in English Vinglish, Madhuri Dixit in Lajja, and Madhubala in Mughal-E-Azam

Wow. will need to watch Heaven On Earth.

Yes, there are so many. Sridevi in EV and Mom too was mindblowing. Madhuri in Lajja and Mrityudand. So true. They don't come to mind immediately. Tabu also has had some amazing performances.

Both Preity and Aish did some of their best work playing abused housewives in western films. Preity's was a Canadian film which she got some awards and nominations for in Canada. For example, she was nominated for Canada's Oscar, the Genie Award. Are there any other Indian actresses (or even actors for that matter) who have been nominated for another country's highest acting award? She's utterly convincing as a Punjabi woman and the film itself is somewhat similar to Paheli in the sense that it's about a dissatisfied housewife forced into an arranged marriage who finds relief through magic (a magic realism film).

Aish had Provoked, a British film about a woman who was abused regularly by her husband and kills him in self-defense and goes to jail.

Agree with you on Sridevi in Mom and Madhuri in Mrityudand. Rekha in Lajja as well is just as spectacular as Madhuri. Also Rani in Hichki and Mrs. Chatterjee. I tried to only go with one performance per actress but all of these performances were amazing.

Similarly with Tabu, she had so many that I couldn't think of just one to narrow down to. I think her Chandni Bar would be my pick for her, as it's the most haunting of her performances.

Another lesser known movie I recommend is The Last Year. It was hailed as Amitabh Bachchan's best performance to date. It's an English-language Indian movie also starring Preity Zinta, Shefali Shah (she won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress), Divya Dutta, and Arjun Rampal.

I would also think of Astitva for Tabu with a similar storyline you've mentioned above. however, don't think there is abuse involved in that movie just loneliness.

Even the small girl in Black who plays the younger version of Rani in was unbelievably insane in that role I feel. She leaves me spellbound every time I watch her. In spite of khamoshi, HDDCS, Devdas being great, Black was where I took my hats-off to SLB as a creative genius to get those performances out of the cast of Black.

Absolutely, what a performance by him in The Last Lear. In front of a camera, I don't feel there has ever anybody ever in India who has looked more natural than Amitabh.

Yes, Astitva is similar to those films except she's not abused, just unloved. That's another one of Tabu's great performances.

In a lot of films like Black, the child actor gets completely ignored during awards season, so I'm really glad that didn't happen with Black and Ayesha Kapur and that she also won a Filmfare for her performance. Sometimes the child actors have as much screentime as the main actors and if their performance is not believable, audiences may not be able to connect with the film until it's too late.

Very well said. Ayesha Kapur yes. I remember that scene where she has a fit and her eyes skew upwards. The entire multiplex's mouths were open and everyone was gasped at the performance on screen. That's the beauty of Black. She set the bar so high for Rani and Rani delivered perfectly.

I distinctly remember SRK's words from the Filmfare Awards Ceremony from 2005 when he won the Power award. He said "What is Power? Power is Amitabh Bachchan in Black". You don't realise it till then but when he said it it was so perfectly put. The awards were held in Feb-March 2005 and the movie had just released in early 2005

I was glad also that Filmfare recognized Black and didn't just leave it for the critics awards. They made sure to recognize it with the main awards as well. For example, Khamoshi got awards at Filmfare mainly from the critics categories such as Best Film and Best Actress.
